I've reallyonly seen Borneo all the way through, then reasonably sized chunks of Marquesas, HVV and One World. One World was the first season I ever tried to watch live and I watched enough to know I didn't like it.

The others I enjoyed though! Marquesas might be a bit weaker but the parts I saw (in the middle) were interesting and enjoyable.

I'm trying to decide the next season I want to try watching. I'm more or less spoiled on boot order and probably the twists of each season, but not really how it all fell together.

I'm spoiled by newer seasons. It came on TV and it was painfully boring for me to watch. I'm sure I'd think a lot differently if I saw it when it aired.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:56
Survivor: Borneo

Television history. Radically different from modern Survivor, this season shows the evolution of strategy and the beginning of the voting block. Every single castaway is memorable and was a household name in 2000, a must watch for any Survivor fan.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:57
Survivor: Australian Outback

Now that alliances are not frowned upon, Australia is a giant leap in the evolution of survivor strategy, further constructing an archetypal heroic strategy (Colby) and an archetypal villainous strategy (Jerri). Interesting cast, fun all around.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:57
Survivor: Thailand

Awful winner, boring season all around, only one person in the entire cast that I even really liked.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:58
Survivor: Pearl Islands

Introduction to so many big name players, considered one of the best seasons overall, interesting twist with great results.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:58
Survivor: Vanuatu

Interesting cast, fun challenges, great underdog/revenge storyline. A lot of hilarious early boots on the ever lulzy Lopevi tribe, and a lot of great strategic minds (and a lot of lesbians!) on the Yasur tribe.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:58
Survivor: Palau

A hero is born under terrible circumstances. An ultimate example of survival. Didn't like the winner, but that doesn't ruin the overall greatness of the season.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:58
Survivor: Exile Island

Unpredictable, likeable and hilarious cast, great strategy, amazing characters.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:58
Survivor: Cook Islands

A lot of big names come from this season. Kinda meh overall, but a must watch for anyone interested in watching basically all of the future returnee seasons. Overrated winner.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:59
Survivor: Fiji

So bad. Bad cast and overall bad season, I hated pretty much everyone, and it's only redeeming qualities were the great blindsides it had.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:59
Survivor: China

Absolutely amazing. Great cast, best challenges of any season, amazing location, fantastic strategy and blindsides. A must watch.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:59
Survivor: Micronesia - Fans vs. Favorites

Interesting returnees, interesting fans, a lot of backstabbing and betrayal, very dramatic overall.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:59
Survivor: Gabon

Amazing. I loved the cast, I loved the location, I loved the randomness and the unpredictability of the entire thing. Definitely recommend.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 6:59
Survivor: Tocantins

Interesting alliances, nice location, good players. I would say that every single person who made the merge deserves a second chance at the game, if they haven't gotten it already.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 7:00
Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains

Wonderful cast, exciting pre-merge, an amazing first merge tribal council, pretty predictable from then on save a few "wow" boots.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 7:00
Survivor: Nicaragua

Underrated, unpredictable, awesome cast, lame twist, a pretty meh winner.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 7:00
Survivor: Redemption Island

So predictable, so aggravating to watch, the beginning of the cursed Redemption Island twist.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 7:00
Survivor: One World

Mean and nasty people in the cast, lame twist, very predictable and boring due to one player's superb gameplay.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 7:01
Survivor: Philippines

A breath of fresh air after a series of terrible and mediocre seasons. Great characters, the three-tribe dynamic works very well, a lot of drama, great strategy, another good underdog story.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 7:01
Survivor: Caramoan - Fans vs. Favorites II

Terrible editing. The only recognizable favorites got the worst edit, and the winner was predictable from episode one. The fans tribe was a joke and it was hard telling any of them apart. Really bad overall.

Matt @ 3/1/2014 7:01
Survivor: Blood vs. Water

Amazing twist that sounds bad but worked out really well. This season actually made redemption island work, and the RI twist and family members twist worked hand in hand. Editing is a bit predictable, but there are some amazing characters that you wouldn't expect from episode one. Very satisfying boot order.

I dunno, I didn't watch any episode of survivor at all until after HVV had already aired, watched a few episodes of HVV and enjoyed it, but Borneo I enjoyed enough to watch from start to finish. I liked the editting of it a lot more. It was uglier and most people were not master strategists but watching them try to figure things out was exciting. It felt like the edittors didn't know what to really do with the show yet, so they ended up creating this very uniquely strange narrative.

I tend to like the stories and characters more than the actual strategy when it comes to watching, though, and I'm a sucker for the look of old 90s/early 2000s shows, so that might explain why I enjoyed it so much.

I like watching HD and beautiful imagery, (Like Gabon) so watching Borneo for me was a drastic change. And I love the music and intensity that goes with modern Survivor. (Of a season with good editing mind you)

I can understand the love for Borneo but I can also see why some people find it boring to watch. (I know it's a beloved season but I've seen some people who I share similar mind with) A lot of that season focused on camp life and "survival" which is the most boring part of Survivor to me. My favorite part is the characters mixed with game - not when they go fishing etc

Yeah I don't really think you HAVE to like it just because its the first or a classic. I just personally enjoyed it a lot. I can understand why uglier set, slower plot, lesser strategy would be boring for some people though.

I will admit the survival focus in the first half had a tendency to get a little sidetracky, but I think the balance was pretty spot on post-merge.
