oh man episode 5
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMOREEE
|
I read a really interesting theory that Hart's daughter was taken advantage of by the cult somehow. This is why she had those explicit drawings when she was young, threw the crown up in the tree (reminded her of the antlers), and is acting up as she's older. It all fits perfectly I think |

episode 1 thots

good intro. I liked that the interviewers got steadily more involved, and I liked how FLAT those sequences were when played against the '95 scenes. Central duo is pretty bril, even tho Rust's remarks are a bit (: at times. very intriguing! |

episode 3! it's heating up!
|
honestly the mystery is far more compelling than Hart's domestic troubles. i really hope it kind of resolves itself soon because save for revealing his SHALLOW FACADE OF MASCULINITY it hasn't done much for me. The interviews are almost the best part for me, mainly because the acting is at its best when it's just these guys sitting at tables. Is the chronology ever revealed?
Lot of haunting imagery. The shot introducing the crazy guy in the congregation (the one that pops up out of nowhere in the theme song) was especially memorable. And that ending was just :| . Made me wanna watch the next episode immediately. |
I had a friend who likened Rust to a 15-year-old who just found out what Nietzsche is. Before I watched, this had me dreading the PHILOSOPHICAL bent of the show, but it's actually one of my favorite parts. I think the fact that Hart is always very much opposed helps it.

That was even better than last weeks tbh. I think they topped it. The way the episode was structured was really really cool
The opening was nuts. There's so much tension when Marty and Rust say that they were suddenly fired upon my heavy machine guns. I was waiting for all hell to break loose. The very split second when I saw them start to sneak in and realized they were full of shit was awesome. They were lying to the two detectives, but also to everyone else/the board in the past. You knew something big had to happen to force them to lie and that created even MORE tension than a shootout would've IMO. Marty opening the container and then killing the seemingly BIG BAD of the season right away was too good
After that I had no idea where the show was heading at all. Things jumped ahead so quickly. Obviously there would have to be a new revelation in the case. It's a really cool shift and it came at a great time in the show. They stopped the '95 flashback/interview structure before it could become too repetitive and are shuffling things around now. Really well thought out. It felt weird seeing Rust out of that room and seeing Marty with his grown up kids
And those last 10 minutes were great too. I was on the edge of my seat as Rust was investigating that abandoned place. I had no idea what he was doing there. It was kinda FREAKY to me tbh! I felt like something dreadful was about to happen |

MY THEORY!
|
The idea about Marty's daughter that you posted Boc is interesting. She also arranged her dolls over a murder scene and Marty took a long look at it. There's definitely some weird cult shit going on
BUT! I have this strange feeling that Marty is behind a lot of this. Maybe even the original killing. Rust's weird ass personality seems like a red herring to me and Marty is actually psychotic. They've set that up well with his domestic issues. He beat the shit out of that guy for no reason and now he smacked his daughter. He's nuts. Crazier than Rust in a lot of ways
They're spending some time trying to convince Marty that Rust was pushing the case however he wanted, but I have a feeling that Marty may KEYSER SOZE them and the audience and we'll see that Marty was actually playing Rust all along or something crazy |

I'm a huge fan of this show, I read this article about it's relationship to Robert W. Chambers' book The King in Yellow. It's really cool to pick up all the references the crazy meth addicts keep dropping about the Yellow King, the dark stars and Carcosa.
This definitely adds a completely different element to the show. Anyone who's a fan of the show should check it out.

oh. MEN.
|
Episode 5 was stunning. From the sheer cleverness and suspense of the opening 20 minutes to the beautiful time skips (that shot of Marty's daughters felt like something out of Malick) to the SHOCKING REVEALS, everything was just perfect.
I think it's pretty clear that Rust is not the killer, if only because that is way too definitive a conclusion with three episodes left. But I don't think Marty could have done it either. He may be a really violent man with severe anger issues, but we've already seen him at his lowest. Because we've been so privy to every negative detail of his character, I don't think there's that much to add.
I was sort of suspicious, early on, that Marty's older daughter (Aubrey?) had been sexually abused in some way, but with her teenage characterization I kind of hope that's not the case. I'm not sure HOW she will end up being significant to the plot (and I think too much time has been spent on her for not to), but it may just be a reflection of Marty's inability to assist his family, letting the years go by, etc. |
I KIND OF WANNA REWATCH ALL THE EPISODES FOR CLUES NOW (:

HONESTLY probably. The way it broke so many established television rules and even defied the premise of the show was amazing. And there is a strain of BB in it, with its emphasis on haunting visuals and exploration of human nature. It doesn't really have BB's humor, and it got crazy WAY QUICKER, but that's the price of having a very limited timeframe for the story.
