I liked this the most out of the MCU I've seen so far. It was pretty decent.
Eternals > Shang Chi > Black Widow

Yes.
But it wasn't intentional.

Everyone said this one sucked so I never watched it. But I watched it today and adored Gemma Chan and Kumail Nanjiani. Found Gilgamesh and Thena's relationship really cute. And was here for Barry Keoghan in the flashback scenes.
Some very random and rough thoughts.
|
This line felt so cheap: "I always wondered how we survived the destruction of other planets that we were on. By being connected to the Celestial as it emerged." Okay.
As for this living in the marvel universe... it feels like it breaks it and just should be its own thing. The entire concept just doesn't fit in the cinematic universe in the way they want it to, at least it feels that way to me.
BIGGEST TAKE AWAY: We need to see Kumail Nanjiani again in future Marvel fare. If they don't give us that, they've failed us. He and his 50 year friend were hella fun.
I didn't mind the twist with Cyclops. But it was jarring to see him just letting Sersi try and do the exact same thing that he killed Ajak for. Couldn't he have given voice to his belief that they should let it happen. It seemed like plenty of people would've done things his way if they were left in the dark about what he did to Ajak.
Instead he goes about it in the most violent and bad looking way possible, lol, to have everyone turn against him. This doesn't feel like the reason why people don't like this movie, but it was the weakest point for me.
If you rewatch it, I'm sure there's instances where he could've kept the Eternals apart, too. Say by killing the monsters himself after they killed Ajak, so none of them would've had a reason to come together in the first place. Thus Sersi never even gets that orb, never finds out the information, etc. The world would've ended before they even knew Ajak was dead. Like... the way things fall apart when you look at the actions and motives of Cyclops is hard to reckon with.
I also wasn't fond of them making it seem like Cyclops was super powerful when it suited them near the end, but throughout the first half we're led to believe Gilgamesh is the most powerful followed by Thena.
AND another thing! Your plan is to put the celestial to sleep. Okay, great. Put Cyclops and Sprite to sleep first. I'm sure that'd be much easier. If the answer is he can't put other Eternals to sleep, then good job putting the line in there about how he put Thena to sleep so Gilgamesh could go on vacation. When you introduce so many powers that can alter so much it must've been hard to make this all work.
Wasn't a big fan of the last few scenes either, but that'd just be more nitpicks. |
Nitpicks aside, I liked it enough. I probably will never watch it again, but it wasn't boring or uninteresting. I think what I liked most were the performances. It was hard not to get frustrated overthinking why some actions happened or why others didn't, but if I ignore that and just accept that characters were oblivious to other ways to go about things, etc. it works! But yeah, this movie doesn't really deserve that much thinking about it, but it was hardly the worst Marvel movie. I think I fell asleep to Thor: The Dark World in theaters. |

I wish this had come about as a tv series instead. Imagine an episode focused on Kingo, an episode focused on Thena and Gilgamesh, an episode focused on Cyclops and Sersi, etc. more room for flashbacks and character moments. It's rough with how many Eternals there are. It's like wanting an Avengers level impact without the movies that led to them. |
