The Mummy
Boy do I wish more blockbusters would return to the mold of this/Pirates of the Caribbean/even National Treasure. Silly swashbuckling adventure is sorely lacking these days. It was actually kinda weird to go back and watch a movie where a bunch of genre tropes would play out without being immediately undercut like every movie has to do now in every one of those moments now (as much as I do love them, GotG is especially guilty of this)
Fraser/Weisz are a lot of fun here, crazy how Fraser never went on to much of a career outside of this franchise. Definitely a turn-your-brain-off fun movie I'd rewatch if I was in that kinda mood

Honey Boy
thought it was great, probably top 3 of the year so far. I was a bit skeptical about Shia playing his dad going in (and thought it'd feel like stunt casting) but it really didn't, he completely disappeared into the character. Noah Jupe was really good as young Shia too. If there was a weak point it'd be the stuff with Lucas Hedges but it was fine

Shitty at&t service went out, so I watched multiple movies this weekend.
Flip the gender card: cute, but super low budget.
Bohemian Rhapsody: Fantastically done. I cried like a bitch at the end.
Shazam: Hilarious and campy as superhero movies should be.
In Bruges: Weird, darkly funny, different, and really well done.
Diggstown: Old fun movie with James Caan as a con man. My bro and I have watched it at least once a year for a couple of decades.

Wife and I saw it a couple of weeks ago. It was cute, and didn't have too many if those "trying too hard" moments that family comedies often have.

Going on a lil 2019 release binge
Honeyland - A great documentary featuring the absolute worst neighbors ever captured on film
High Flying Bird - Shot entirely on an iPhone but no very interesting otherwise
The Last Black Man in San Francisco - So great. Both leads, cinematography, and especially the MUSIC were perfect. My favorite score this year I think
Marriage Story - I thought this would W R E C K me. It didn't. I wish it did :( . Movies about sad divorces always get me and this seemed like the quintessential sad/messy divorce movie and yet I didn't find myself connecting with it so much, not sure why. Kinda ended up feeling unexpectedly surface level to me. Still good, just not amazing like I was hoping. Adam Driver is great though. I love Randy Newman but the score was so misplaced and didn't help

hey same
Thought Shia was perfect. Agreed about the Lucas Hedges sequences but I will say he subtly nailed the way Shia talks at some points. Noah Jupe was great too. I'm rooting hard for Shia to keep turning his shit around

How did you watch The Last Black Man in San Francisco? Is it on streaming? I’ve been wanting to see it.
I watched Marriage Story last night and really liked it. I thought it showed sides of divorce that films usually don’t really depict, and I actually thought the score fit really well. Laura Dern was also perfect in this. | "All this from a slice of gabagool?" |

Last Black Man has been out for awhile so it’s ~out there if you can find it
I appreciated Marriage Story but it kinda felt like a run of the mill Noah Baumbach movie (not in a terrible way) instead of something really incredible. The knife trick scene was perfect though and I loved the big fight scene. Honestly as silly as it sounds movies like Mrs. Doubtfire or HOOK or even Liar Liar resonate with me more in terms of my parents splitting up than this did. I just saw none of my family in this movie at all

Watched Love, Antosha last night. A doc about Anton Yelchin. It’s brutal. His death was so sad and stupid, such a freak accident. He would’ve gone on to do great things I think. Probably the saddest movie from this year

My entire family fell ill last weekend right after Thanksgiving and I thought I got away unscathed but then it hit me mid-week in a BIG WAY so I’ve been watching a lot of movies this week.
Two I watched and loved: Other People and Booksmart
I hadn’t heard of Other People before, but Netflix recommended it and I saw Jesse Plemmons was the lead and Bradley Whitfield was in it so I was like “Let’s fuckin’ gooooo!”
That said, it’s about watching a loved one battle cancer, and my uncle died after a tough battle with cancer a few weeks ago, so it was a bit raw, but really, really well done. Wonderful job balancing comedy within a pretty sad story. Has a strong message about family. RECOMMEND.
And Booksmart was excellent, but I feel like people know that. | "All this from a slice of gabagool?" |

Waves
idk maybe part of it was just me being swept up with the AMAZING visuals/soundtrack, but I really dug this. Felt a bit like Krisha merged with Place Beyond the Pines + like I said, such a good soundtrack. |
I do feel like the last act of the movie kinda flags a bit after such a propulsive first couple acts. I mean I get the intention behind it, the last act is meant to be about forgiveness and healing familial wounds and it worked well enough but was definitely the weakest part. I will say Taylor Russell was fantastic tho and arguably stole the movie after having almost nothing to do in the first half |
Marriage Story
I liked the performances in this quite a bit (Driver esp) but the whole was a bit less than the sum of its parts in this case. The knife scene was absolutely the best part, I was physically cringing through the entirety of that. Other standouts were the two hearing scenes (Liotta/Alda/Dern were all great in this) and of course the big argument. I kinda feel like Nicole was sidelined a bit too much after her first meeting with Nora tbh, after that it seemed to be much more one-sided which probably couldn't be entirely helped since I'm GUESSING this was at least slightly autobiographical in Baumbach's case
