JW3 was dope. That antique shop knife fight at the beginning is one of my favorite movie fights |
I want to see this but first the first two - if they're free lol.
Ahoda? |
All 3 are up on plex. |

I watched the Child's play remake on a flight Saturday. I thought it was pretty considering how they switched it up from the original.

Empire Strikes Back
we've been working through the series starting with Phantom Menace for the last couple months. some things - the prequels are actually quite good (AOTC being the worst of them, with the worst cgi and the worst pacing), and are actually quite unique for SW in their worldbuilding. they're all about showing you new worlds, new cultures, new visuals unlike anything the series has done before - that's not what people necessarily ~like~ star wars for, but those movies did embrace it.
A New Hope is also better than i remember - it's super fast paced and loaded with breathless, exciting energy. the worldbuilding feels totally irrelevant to that movie because it's more about this wild journey, less about explaining anything real about the backstory. it kinda helps that the movie's this postmodern pop art pastiche.
naturally because empire's always towered above the others its shine has kinda dimmed a little. especially watching all the lucas films in a row you can see how hands off he was with this one, which took his style and his iconography seriously but also tried to tell actual character-driven stories. the structure (hero on isolated planet, others on run from empire) was maybe done better in the last jedi, but it's still great how this movie consistently finds new angles on those basic conflicts. it's crazy how yoda looks better here than in every other movie, and the dagobah material is magical. still, the third act is really more rushed than i remember - you think lando's gonna be a bigger part of the movie but so much of the vespin stuff feels cut to oblivion, to just get the essential plot work out of the way. |
Why does Hupu look like Darkus? |

Adams Family
What boring trash. Kids loved it of course. My mom fell asleep. Which I was that lucky |

Parasite
Worthy of all the hype. It's fantastic. Feels like every single small moment comes back around in either a comedic or tragic way. It's so well written and unpredictable. I decided to watch/read nothing about it so I went in super fresh, I didn't even know the genre. It ended up blending comedy/drama/thriller so perfectly
9/10, my favorite of the year so far. BONG/SONG duo can't fail

The Great Escape
nb nb. The whole ramp-up for the escape was pretty fun, it definitely took its time but I didn't mind it for that section. Even with that part taking around 2 hours there was still some details they glossed over that I would've been interested in seeing. It kinda started to lose me after the escape though when the characters starting embarking on their side escapes. I think mainly because I didn't really care much about any individual character except maybe McQueen's. That's the main thing that kept this from being a GREAT movie to me was y'know...characters
tbh, War of the Planet of the Apes did it better

12 Angry Men
FINALLY. I won’t say anything that hasn’t been said about it thousands of times but it’s basically perfect. A masterclass in stage setting and blocking and acting and character work. One of the best crafted movies on a lot of levels

I can’t believe he directed Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead too. Not just because of the severe drop in quality but the span of time in between both seems crazy

Also some fun cast members in there from other things
Juror #4 as the cockroach guy in Creepshow
Juror #7 as the President in Being There (knew i recognized him here)
AND Ed Begley jr's dad as the racist
Speaking of which, the scene where they all stonewall the racist as he's babbling on was so good

Paris, Texas
that monologue tho. I dug this throughout but damn, both scenes in the 'booth' were sublime. Definitely up there with my all-time fav scenes

The Great Escape!
Pretty entertaining classic action movie. McQueen was great. The Mole scene was pretty heartbreaking. Just the image of him tangled up in the fence was haunting in itself. The overall runtime was a bit difficult at times. There's a lot of jumping around between the different groups which are a bit disorienting. Donald Pleasance was probably my favorite. His death is so SAD!!!!
American Movie
This was fantastic. It might be one of my favorite documentaries. You just can't fake people like this. They're all so brutally authentic and so weird. Bill was the MVP. It's as if Eeyore was an actual person. I love that he left money to Mark in his will. In a way, he was way more supportive than all the other people in Mark's family. Love the Mike's lottery money side plot and how scared he is to share the news with people. I thought the actual movie was pretty cool. Super visual and grainy. It was nice to know that underneath Mark's weird-ass behavior, he actually knew what he was going for.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
This movie was way better than it had any right to be. It could have so easily been another teenage coming of age movie with a witty spin on it, but the camera work and performances were all great. The scene in the hospital was perfect. The narration was a bit hokey at times for me, but whatever. It all has a purpose. WAHOO.

Ford vs Ferrari
Really good. I saw it in imax and it was worth it with all the racing scenes
|
there was a really good scene with excellent camera work where Bales character wasn’t allowed to go to Le Mans so he’s in an airport garage listening to the race in the radio. An airplane is taxing and the shadow of cares that are there are on the wall and it looks like they are driving and the with the radio describing the race was so awesome. |

Vanilla Sky
that was...a movie. I don't think this was conventionally GOOD but boy oh boy was this an entertaining mess. Gotta appreciate how much they WENT for it, which to me made up for most of its flaws
|
I knew next to nothing about this going in and I definitely did NOT expect the directions this took. From the accident scene and on I was totally buckled in and ALONG FOR THE RIDE. I did like how it put you in the mindset of David in that you start to feel a bit like you're going insane yourself by the end
Cruise and Diaz were perfect for this, their manic performances were exactly what the movie needed. Cruise with the ugly makeup on led to a bunch of (un)intentionally hilarious moments, especially in the whole club sequence
The exposition at the end, although SOMEWHAT needed, was p clunky. Don't think ALL of that needed to be spelled out. Apparently that's something that was added in for this that wasn't in the Spanish original (interestingly, Cruz plays the same role in both. HUH!)
also the bar scene in Inception where everyone stops to look at Dom was ripped straight from this. That shit is unsettling |
