Die Hard
...for the first time! I feel like this was almost an identical situation to The Matrix for me, where it was PARTIALLY a victim of its own hype/something I'd appreciate more had I watched 20+ years ago. Still good, just not something I'd put as an all-time fav
Gruber was a good villain, his "Mr. Takagi won't be joining you...for the rest of his life" was probably my favorite line of the movie just for Rickman's delivery
And SERGEANT AL stole the show as the best side character. What a guy! Side characters were solid all around really. Needed more Argyle tbh

Ad Astra
felt like it was a lot weirder and better in its original cut. the world building of the and speak to that. as is i liked it quite a bit, and thought pitt's performance (dead-eyed, flat-affected) was really moving, especially near that final stretch, when he was taken over with boyish wonder.

Jackie Brown
FINALLY! This has always been near the top of my list for movies that I really need to just watch
It was good! I went into it knowing absolutely nothing about the plot which is kinda crazy considering it's a QT movie that's been around forever. It's so weird to me that there's been this QT movie that I've just never bothered to watch
Glad I did tho. It's near the bottom of the pack for me for me but I mean...it's Tarantino, I love it all. Jackie's got STIFF competition and they're all classics that I've loved for awhile now. That's hard to top
Jackson was a really great villain. The trunk scene early one was classic. De Niro in a supporting role was pretty weird to see but he killed it. Super subtle but perfect performance
Loved seeing Robert Forster have a major role in something after silently killing it in every movie ever for ages. Didn't know he was nominated for supporting actor for this, that's cool. I loved him and Jackie together
7/10 for me and like all QT movies I'd love to revisit it soon and can see it being bumped up higher

Saw Ad Astra. Enjoyable. I was pretty tired and it was fairly slow so I would have liked it more if had more energy. |

JW3 was dope. That antique shop knife fight at the beginning is one of my favorite movie fights |
I want to see this but first the first two - if they're free lol.

Brooklyn
DE-LIGHTFUL! It's been a while since I've watched a movie that was this simple/traditional so it was p refreshing. Definitely had a throwback feel to it, beyond just the period setting. Ronan was perfect
|
I had so much dread that she'd decide not to return :'( Especially after that unopened letters reveal. I do wish the movie would've shed more light on her inner thoughts during that whole stretch tho, it kinda left you to guess on a bit too much on her motivations/feelings after doing a really good job with that through the first 2/3
That shot of her across the street at the end was perfect. CLICHED but perfect, which I think just about sums up the whole movie
Also poor ma :( That goodbye scene was definitely the saddest part of the movie for me. That was played so beautifully by both actresses, you could just see the heartbreak on the mom's face after riding on such a high that her daughter was gonna settle down back home, only to get it ripped away so suddenly

Empire Strikes Back
we've been working through the series starting with Phantom Menace for the last couple months. some things - the prequels are actually quite good (AOTC being the worst of them, with the worst cgi and the worst pacing), and are actually quite unique for SW in their worldbuilding. they're all about showing you new worlds, new cultures, new visuals unlike anything the series has done before - that's not what people necessarily ~like~ star wars for, but those movies did embrace it.
A New Hope is also better than i remember - it's super fast paced and loaded with breathless, exciting energy. the worldbuilding feels totally irrelevant to that movie because it's more about this wild journey, less about explaining anything real about the backstory. it kinda helps that the movie's this postmodern pop art pastiche.
naturally because empire's always towered above the others its shine has kinda dimmed a little. especially watching all the lucas films in a row you can see how hands off he was with this one, which took his style and his iconography seriously but also tried to tell actual character-driven stories. the structure (hero on isolated planet, others on run from empire) was maybe done better in the last jedi, but it's still great how this movie consistently finds new angles on those basic conflicts. it's crazy how yoda looks better here than in every other movie, and the dagobah material is magical. still, the third act is really more rushed than i remember - you think lando's gonna be a bigger part of the movie but so much of the vespin stuff feels cut to oblivion, to just get the essential plot work out of the way. |

I saw "The Girl" which was surprisingly good - I didn't think it would be, but it was. Then, re-watched "The Birds" after because it made sense. I love when "classic" movies are really good but also they're so bad (spec. effects) but still so good.

Alfred Hitchcock was apparently the "Weinstein of his time" - chew on that. Sorry if that bursts anyone's bubble. |
