Oh, for whatever reason I assumed it would help out in the events that are upcoming, not be like a usable item against a player.

there were hostile riders and wild animals that could attack you in at least some versions of the game. might help protect against that

The push for the curtis leader vote early in the game worries me. He's great as scum, so I'm not sure how a bunch of people could be town reading him that strongly so early in the game.

We don’t know what’s gonna happen. Think we’ll regret spending money and then potentially hitting town with a gun... but we all play however we want ;)

you also need enough oxen to pull your wagon, and wagon parts.
