damn. I feel like plenty of classics end up being a bit of a letdown and are more a product of their time, but this holds up beautifully. idk if there's anything I can say about it besides it lives up to the hype/reverence behind it. Fonda's so good in this

Going South 1978 7/10
Jack Nicholson’s directorial debut. And Mary Steenburgen’s movie debut.
A western comedy with an outstanding cast.
I’d been wanting to watch this for a long time, just never got around to it. I thought it was very entertaining and enjoyable. Jack is so good in pretty much anything and he’s good in this. Pretty light hearted and funny.

Small Apartments 2012 6/10
Offbeat comedy crime drama with an unusual cast. Somewhat bizarre at times and somewhat hilarious at times. Definitely has it’s moments but slow moving for the most part.

Thought it was great. The three leads are all terrific, first I was gonna say especially Stone...but then I wanted to say especially Pesci.....then De Niro. They were all top notch. It's great watching De Niro on his game instead of most of his modern day crap. Also this was basically the first Sharon Stone performance I've watched and she killed it
The tension in the last hour was THIIIIIIICK. Once Nicky and Ginger hooked up I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. I kinda wish there was more of an inevitable head on collision between Sam/Nicky/Ginger instead of them having fairly separate endings but it still worked. Nicky's death was p brutal. Wasn't craaaazy about the final final scene but it was good, I did like the swerve that he survived the car bombing
There's one small moment that I really loved. When Ginger and James Woods took the daughter and Sam calls, Sharon Stone starts screaming at Woods and the music blares in over her, it's a great lil scene. The music in general was perfect, House of the Rising Sun, Gimme Shelter, etc
I loved those classic Scorsese sweeping camera movements as they’d push right in on someone. This movie was full of them
Makes me wanna rewatch Goodfellas, I haven't seen it in aaaaages and forget so many details
8/10 |

Barry Lyndon
well if that wasn't one of the prettiest movies I've ever seen
|
admittedly this did DRAG for me a bit at times - I think Kubrick's cold detachment worked both for and against this movie. It worked at times because of the wry/cynical way the events were portrayed (especially by the narrator), but at the same time I never...felt any particular way about Barry for the majority of the movie. Which is not GREAT when it comes to a movie that's all about that protagonist's journey (whereas it works for something like 2001 where it's not really "about" the characters)
The scene where I really felt for him though was the last duel scene, which was probably my favorite part of the movie. The tension in that scene was great. Bullingdon turned into QUITE the little shit by the end (even if it was at least a bit sympathizable), which is weird cuz I really liked the character when he was a little kid and was trading BARBS. I guess his confidence disappeared once Barry started giving him beatings?
I agree w/ Curtis that O'Neal was FINE (although apparently Redford was who Kubrick really wanted for this part but he turned it down, that would've been interesting to see), I think his partially wooden acting kinda worked for the character in a way? Since Barry was pretty much just a dumb/naive rogue
also agree about the STRONG Favourite influences, especially in Act II (Favourite surpassed this tho imooo)

A Fistful of Dollars & Yojimbo
I kinda watched the former on a whim cuz I've wanted to watch through the Dollars trilogy for a while (especially after seeing OUaTitW) but after watching it I remembered reading that Yojimbo was an inspiration for it so I made it a double feature. And...BOY was it! It spoiled some plot beats for me but for the most part I was still surprised by some stuff purely because I didn't think it'd be THAT much of a shameless ripoff
I mean, both were good, but Yojimbo was clearly superior in pretty much every way - characters (especially), plot, acting, camerawork, etc. There were at least SOME improvements I felt like in Dollars tho, like the end battle I def liked better in that. Also the "...make that four coffins" line was way more badass than the corresponding scene in Yojimbo
def an interesting contrast tho and I'm glad I watched both

Speaking of Henry Fonda, Once Upon a Time in the West
V good stuff as always, Leone is so great. I'd put this behind Good Bad Ugly and For A Few Dollars More but it was still really good. Fonda and Bronson were both terrific
Favorite part was the final duel flashback reveal, the camera pulling back to show his brother standing on his shoulders was so good. And him putting the harmonica in his mouth post-duel was great
Morricone is a genius. He's top three all time for me
