Ed Wood

fun movie! Was expecting maybe a bit more pathos

This. It was fun enough but it didn't do much for me overall. I liked Landau a lot and Depp was fun

On the same level as Disaster Artist prob. My favorite movie about making a movie off the top of my head is still easily Brigsby Bear

Grizzly Man

Oh boy. What a kook ole Timmy was, but definitely a fascinating character. I thought Herzog took a lot of care with it, I liked that he told the friend to destroy the audio instead of deciding to include it in the doc. I don't even know where to fall when it comes to Timothy. He was obviously reckless and had some p major issues, and dragging Amy into it is pretty brutal, but I liked that he lived how he wanted to and I was still rooting for him to prove people wrong. It's a shame that he didn't in the end. Or I guess he did for many many years but I still wish he got out of it unscathed tbh, FUCK THE NAYSAYERS!

I loved many parts but these two stood out to me:

- Herzog comparing Timothy's erratic behavior with actors and saying that he's had to deal with a similar type in his movies before - no doubt referring to the crazed Klaus Kinski

- The part where Timothy starts crying over the bee who died in the middle of his work, just to end the segment with him saying "oh he just moved.........is he sleeping!?" I cracked up

What a legend

What I really like about Ed Wood is that Burton really puts his style on the movie, rather than placing the entire movie on the back of the source material, which is essentially what Disaster Artist is.

But you know, whatever, FUCK ME!

Steve Jobs

I thought the decision to center the movie around three launches was a really unique way to tell a "bio" story. This movie feels very much like a Sorkin movie in the sense that it's mostly just flashy dialogue. I think what separates this from Social Network is that you can clearly feel the collaboration between Sorkin, Fincher, and Reznor. Jobs feels like Boyle kind of drove autopilot on a vehicle that Sorkin built.

Also Steve Jobs!

Really enjoyed it, more than I thought I wound. Sorkin’s script is great and Fassbender is pretty amazing in it. So is Winslet. So is everyone. Structure and music were both perfect

North by Northwest

baby's first Hitchcock movie :) I enjoyed it overall, though it did def show its age in parts, especially at the end. I found the first half much more gripping than the rest when the enemies' motives were still more shrouded. The exposition scene midway through was ppp forced/clunky

Liked a lot of the humor, especially when the mom was tagteaming with him. Cary Grant was really fun in this. And the iconic cropduster scene still holds up. Can def see how this set the stage for the action genre going forward which was cool to see

Network

goood shit. This movie might resonate even better today than it did when it was made tbh. Can definitely tell how big of an influence this had on Sorkin cuz it absolutely feels like it could've been written by him

The Bridge on the River Kwai

Wow. What a great movie. The 2hr 40 min runtime flew by for me.

All the performances are incredible. The characters are so well written and contrast each other perfectly. I think William Holden was my favorite. He's so fucking snarky and sarcastic, his scenes with the British army are great.

Alec Guinnes was of course amazing. It was definitely nice to see him without brown face :D.

The only thing I was a little bummed about were certain characters that seemed to be central to the story, kind of took a backseat after the halfway mark. Regardless, the last fifteen minutes are absolutely insane. Great ending.

Yojimbo

Really great. It's really cool to watch older movies from directors who constantly reuse the same actors, like the equivalent of today's Wes Anderson and PTA. It's so weird to see Tatsuya Nakadai so young, I'm used to seeing him as a much older adult.

I really enjoy the fight scenes in this. They're sparse, spread out, and super messy. Some of the fights are a little awkward, especially the last one, but it still has elements to it that I really love.

Not my favorite Kurosawa (Ran, SS, Ikiru) but still very enjoyable.

Also River Kwai

V good. The ending is hands down the best part, I liked the way things came together and the tension was perfect

I miss large scale practical sets constructed for movies, they add so much. I loved the in progress bridge rigs that they built and ofc the explosion of the finished bridge. Much better than green screen

I lol'd at the officers ending up helping with the construction anyway. Also the scenes with Shears always trying to get out of going on the mission were funny

Alec Guinness was v good. And I definitely wanna watch more Lean movies

Ranks like 15th on my best picture winner list

Once Upon a Time in the West - lol the title/credit effects in this movie did not age well, oof. Good movie though, Leone sure knows how to wring every last bit of tension out of a scene. That opening sequence was so great. The harmonica guy and Frank's story was p great from beginning to end

Casino - man I really loved certain scenes in this movie but I don't think it amounted to the sum of its parts. Still really liked it but it didn't quite come together in the same way that GoodFellas did which is the obvious comparison
