Embrace of the Serpent - from the director who did Birds of Passage. This dude definitely has had a THEME with his movies so far! Both of them you can basically boil down to a native society losing their identity due to outside forces. This one obviously has a very different setting tho. BoP was better but this was v solid too |
Karamakate and Manduca were great, I just wish the explorer characters were a bit more interesting, especially the second dude. For some reason I couldn't buy that he was from that time period at all, he seemed like some hipster that stepped straight outta 2019. If they would've made that character more compelling that ending could've been so much more powerful
I also am not sure about the decision to make this one B&W, even though it still looked great. It's just surprising that the director wouldn't want to take advantage of the colors of the jungle
That Messiah scene was p nutty, did not see that whole sequence coming
Definitely got some Aguirre vibes from this |
Bad Times at the El Royale - man, the first half of this movie had me RIVETED, it felt like an even better version of Hateful Eight and I was loving it. But it kinda ran outta steam once |
Hemsworth's character showed up, and everyone just spent the rest of the movie tied up. Which still could've been good (like I'm sure Tarantino could've milked tons of tension out of that) but it kinda felt like they didn't know how to end it at that point? The very ending especially felt anti-climactic. Those were the most rootable characters I guess but...eh. It kinda felt like things just...happened rather than feeling really earned |

North By Northwest
A fun little SPY movie. I thought Carey Grant and Eva Marie Saint were great. They had tons of chemistry together. It dragged on a little bit for me but Hitchcock is so great at sprinkling little moments of tension to help ease the story along. I love the little bits with the matches and the blanks.
This felt very different than the other Hitchcock movies that I've seen (Psycho, Birds, Rear Window, Vertigo, Rope) I'm really looking forward to checking out some of his other classics like Rebecca.

I like that movie but the end irritated me and it ruined the movie for me.
Plus the kid covering his ears is one of the worst editing mistakes left in a movie of all time. |

Yeaaaaa I didn't mention it but I thought the ending was super abrupt. It's almost like they ran out of time. It felt weird to rush the ending to a movie that was already over 2 hours long.

I also watched GRIZZLY MAN
YEESH! I pretty much knew the story behind this so I wasn't quite surprised by everything. I love how honest Herzog is in this. He isn't afraid to include people who are brutally honest about Timothy. So many other documentaries would have just made this a simple memorial tape, but Herzog essentially is like "here you go, you decide how you feel"
The scene where he listens to the audio is just haunting. I can't even imagine what that would sound like.

Black Swan.
Perfect movie imo. Some of the cgi might not have aged the best but it didn't bother me. The sound design in the scenes where she's "picking" at herself is so wincing. I love it. I loved everything about it. Natalie Portman was perfect in this. PERRRRFECTTTTTT. Also shout out to VINCENT CASSEL.
Boc, I think there are a few scenes that are gonna spook you, my friend.

Crawl
Half decent. GOOD ENOUGH basically. It's a nice easy breezy 80 minute creature feature with most of the flaws you'd expect. Some frustratingly dumb character choices, bad dialogue, hammy moments at the worst times, main actress was kinda meh. BUT the gators were good and imposing and the gore and kills pretty much bumped it from a failure 5 to a worthwhile 6. Some good tense scenes but they could've squeezed more tension out of the situation and set pieces I think. But it was fun for what it was, better than the semi-similar MEG from last year

12 Years a Slave
Loved the wide shot long takes. The "hanging" scene was brutal to watch. Lupita was amazing. Really really great.

Rushmore - I liked it, probably not quite as much as later Anderson movies (I've only seen Moonrise/Budapest other than this) but it had lots of FUN characters/dialogue. The dinner scene was probably my fav. "I WROTE A HIT PLAY!"
A Star is Born - ehhh. I feel like without Shallow this would've been a very mediocre movie but that alone pushes it into the decent category for me. That scene felt like the climax (not story-wise of course but as far as emotional impact) to me so everything that came after kinda paled in comparison
Paterson - Enjoyed it enough, I see what the director/writer was going for but as a VIEWING EXPERIENCE it didn't totally do it for me. Though it's funny to think |
the "big" moment of the movie is them coming home to find that their dog had chewed up a notebook. I did APPRECIATE how they stuck to the small-scale conflicts/situations like that the whole time. When the realization dawned on me what was chewed up I felt surprisingly AGGRIEVED |
Black Swan - hey wow this was p riveting. Definitely got lots of WHIPLASH vibes from it. Didn't find it scary tbh but boy there were a lot of jump scares, the bath tub one got me PRETTY GOOD. But ya I really liked it, I gotta watch more Aronofsky man
