It's an italian cornmeal dish. It's basically a hot cornmeal batter similar to grits, that is fried or baked. In my family, we bake it into a pie with cheese in the middle and eat it with a tomato based beef stew over it. Others eat it with red sauce.

Also some just make what I referred to as the batter and eat it with a sauce, or fry it similar to canned mush.

Originally it was the food of peasants. Basically the Italian version of ham and beans, mac and cheese, or ramen.
