Apollo 11
It's hard not to at least admire this movie. I don't have a lot of strong feelings about the moon landing other than the typical "yea that was a cool thing that we did" feeling, but I could not help but get super into the take-off and the moon landing sequences. Holy shit. I'm glad that this had more of an archive feel rather than a typical documentary talking head structure because I think it made the overall viewing more immersive. I wish I was able to catch this in a theater.
I found it difficult at times to follow along with the discussion scenes and I think my lack of knowledge on the subject and the movie's decision not to force feed us info (which I don't view as a bad thing necessarily) prevents it from being one of my favorites docs, but it doesn't take away the expertise put into this.

Made wife watch John Wick yesterday. She was about to kill me when the thing happened early in as she loves them. She thought it was ok.
Took the family to see Secret Life Of Pets 2 last night. I liked it better then the first one. Kids loved it |

Fighting With My Family
A fun lil FLICK but doesn't really do much to exceed expectations. It goes everywhere you expect it to go. It's not bad, but it's not great either. The performances are charming, I'm really excited to watch more of Florence Pugh's movies before Midsommar comes out. She's great. Nick Frost and Lena Headey are perfect. I think the only one that stuck out poorly to me was the Rock. It's not that he was bad, it's just that every time he was on screen, you can tell it was because the movie felt like it had to use him as a crutch in case non-wrestling fans were losing interest.
Well written and charming but will probably be my least favorite of the month.

^ p much same here. Good acting, but the script was a bit cheesy/cliched at times (I mean, it IS a sports movie but still). Enjoyable enough tho

The Rock should've definitely just had the first scene, which I actually really liked and worked pretty well in the context of the movie. The phone call scene was suuuper forced tho, although I did like the Vin Diesel dig
It did strike me a bit weird that the triumphant ending with her winning the belt was predicated on a scripted match (and it's not like they were trying to hide the fact that WWE is scripted at any point). It would've made more sense if it was more about her winning over the crowd since that's outside her direct control (and what Hutch/Rock were moreso coaching her about), but it didn't give too much on that front |

Watched Stan and Ollie
Was ok and interesting. Pretty slow movie
I would have liked more of an early life and career movie instead of end of career and life but still pretty interesting. Coughing and reply did a good job imitating laurel and hardy |

I helped out at the Oak Cliff Film Festival this weekend and was able to catch a few movies.
Love, Antosha
Definitely my most favorite watch of the weekend. It's heartbreaking yet uplifting at the same time. They spend little time talking about his death and more so his relationship with his family and his career, which I thought was in good taste. Most everyone knows about his death, but few know just how passionate he was about the industry. I had no idea how much Anton Yelchin was into filmmaking as a whole. It definitely feels like we've been cheated out of what could have been one of the next great actor turned director. If you're a big movie person, the doc will make you realize just how awesome movies are as a whole and the effect they have on our culture. I don't think you have to be a big Anton fan to enjoy the movie, but it definitely helps.
Greener Grass
This was the opening night film and it is fucking WEIRD. It's a super dark comedy about suburban family lifestyle. It has the kid from Hill House and Beck Bennet from SNL. The movie feels like a 100 minute Adult Swim sketch. It's not for everyone, but if you're into really weird humor like Tim and Eric, you'll probably really dig it. The movie feels just a little TOO long but I thought it was consistently entertaining. One of the more unique movies I've seen in awhile.
Daniel Isn't Real
Imagine Fight Club meets Mandy. That's what this is. It's about a young kid with an imaginary friend who tricks him into doing something awful, which leads to the kid having to "lock him away." Fast forward 12 years and the kid releases his friend which leads to some WACKY events. It's an interesting premise with some great cinematography. The movie has some really gnarly moments and knows when to be serious and when to be hammy. The narrative goes in very weird directions, and I found the last act to be a little flat, but overall thought it was a fun watch.
I really wanted to catch the Farewell but was unable to. I did hear great things from everyone who saw it.

It also has a really funny cameo by Jim Cummings. You'd LOVE it.

Booksmart
Lot of fun. Really great soundtrack. The movie is filled with a lot of hit or miss moments for me. I had a hard time getting into the first 20 minutes and the doll sequence but I really enjoyed the pool/party scene. Kaitlyn Dever was great. Everyone was solid. Good TIME.

Same as all of this. I was maybe a little more negative towards it though, I dunno. It was just so painfully typical and the family element wasn't enough to lift it past the cliche sports movie stuff. Like the brother getting rejected was p sad but then he just turned into a dick and it got annoying to watch. Then he flipped 180 again because...why? Cause the step brother said one brief inspirational line? Nawww
The speeches, the training montages, befriending the three girls, the brother's turnaround, the Rock calling the fam, her rigged success. It was all too much
I liked Florence Pugh a lot. Vince was fine. The Rock was whatever, I did like the Vin jab too though
The stuff with all the kids was too corny for me. The shot of the dog raising his ears when The Rock is on the phone. Cmon
I've been wavering between a 5 and a 6 but I think I'm going 5. It wasn't charming enough to lift it up a bit for me
