I'm at the point in the book now where I'm on the cusp of overtaking the show. It's a bit strange because I'm reading events that haven't happened in the show, but there's a bunch of stuff that has happened in the show which hasn't come up in the books yet. Show stuff which still needs to happen: Arya meeting Beric Dondarrion The Hound appearing (though I read that happens a lot later in the book) Everything with the Night's Watch at Craster's Keep Hoster Tully's funeral Tyrion going through Littlefinger's account books Absolutely everything at Astapor Jaime's kidnap and hand chopping I dunno how many of those events happen in the books but I'm guessing all of them. It's just odd that the show has got to those but not some other stuff. I'm now not sure if the show is ignoring these plot threads altogether and doing its own thing or if they just swapped the order of events around. Already the book is very different from the show. Thoros of Myr didn't take Arya and the others and the stuff with Jaime at the inn of the kneeling man was cut. Also Brienne never kills the patrol and fails to bury the women. Everything with Mance has been handled worlds better. They've dropped the ball on that in the show too much. Ygritte is worlds more likeable, Mance himself seems to know what he's doing whereas in the show he not only lacks charisma but he doesn't come across as having much of a clue. Also the antagonism a lot of the wildlings bear Jon is missing and so is the stuff with the warg stuck in the eagle's body which is a cool thing. No mammoths too but I'm guessing that would be too hard to portray and they did show a giant. Oh and Sam does send the ravens. Give the guy a break show-runners, jeeze. They definitely never showed him murdering an Other with the obsidian dagger but since they did introduce the obsidian I'll guess that's coming. Stuff book has done which the show hasn't yet (and may not for all I know): The proposal to marry Tyrion and Sansa - I'm torn on this because they're changing Sansa's role so much already. Littlefinger has no involvement with trying to secure her escape and in fact is working against the cause. So I don't know how major this will be but it seems like a drastic plot point and the silly scene with Shae getting jealous is likely pretext for what's to come. So I'll hold my breath on this. Rickard Karstark's execution - This seems major. They've given Robb a fair deal of time bashing Catelyn in the show which is nice (she deserves it) but this moment never happened and it seems like the time may have passed. It's a fairly major thing because it obviously changes his position a lot. This is when his world completely caves in on itself and Rickard's constant bemoaning his sons deaths was leading up to it. The show hasn't even gone down the road of revealing consequences of his secret marriage yet with the Frey's leaving the cause, but I guess that this and Rickard's death might still be coming. Jorah and Dany having that moment - So this was a pretty big one. Dany's plot differs a lot because of the slow reveal of Barristan, something the show obviously couldn't do properly at all. This gives Jorah a lot of moments of doubt, suspicion and dislike of him which are pretty cool in all. The result of these is him kissing Dany on the ship. I would've thought the show would have loved to dive into something like this, but I guess that without those precluding scenes, there was never any decent pretext to do it. I'm expecting this will come soon because it's again, pretty big. Either way it's getting exciting. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.

- The Tywin/Tyrion/Cersei scene at the end is probably one of my favorites. I think Tywin's the best actor on the show. Cersei's smug face when Tywin ordered her to marry Loras was priceless
