Watched Ready Player One. I knew I would hate this movie going in and I wasn't disappointed. It was boring and it was just a money grab to the 80s kids with all the "nostalgia". I couldn't stand the actors, I mean, any of them. I read they at making a sequal, and I wish they would stop.
Finally watched Blade Runner 2049, since it is free now. I liked a certain number of elements in the film, some of which seem borrowed from Tarkovsky, so I liked it more than I expected. Just not as much as the original.
My biggest issue is all tied to Wallace:
Spoiler
+
Wallace's motivations just don't make sense. He's building replicants to "better" mankind but can't make enough to meet demand, so he wants to be able to help replicants reproduce. So he......fights with the replicants who also want to learn how to reproduce? That doesn't make any sense. He should be working in conjunction with them, if anything. He isn't motivated by money or another, so that's not a factor.
Him gutting the replicant that fell out of the bag as a "new model" was just stupid and gratuitous. Made zero sense.
Would have been better if Wallace was hooked up with the replicants somehow and the human cops (lead by Princess Buttercup) were the antagonists.
How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat?
WHEW! That was a lot of movie, four hours. Made Winter’s Sleep look like a short film
It was great. Everything I expected and more really. The cinematography and scale were both outrageous, every other shot was a work of art. The score is one of the best ever. Lawrence had way more characterization and development (some of it pretty dark) than I would’ve imagined. The quicksand scene, the execution, his breakdown asking for the lemonade. All great. A definite classic that I’m glad to have finally seen

prettyyyyy good. A lot of stuff I liked, not much that I flat out disliked. Some really instantly iconic scenes. The use of music was the best part of the movie for me
It was WAY different than what I thought it’d be. I really didn’t know much going in at all which is weird for how popular it is, but I assumed it was gonna be closer to what the first half hour was. I had no idea the bulk of it was about his jailing and reformation, that really surprised me. Second half was good but I liked the first chunk better, I wish it was more about the crimes of the foursome and that society, I really liked the look of the four as classic villains. Some of those opening moments were brutal and fucked up
I’m probably at a 7/10
Our Letterboxd ratings are funny and show how divisive the movie is:
Jacob: 8
Havo: 1
Miko: 10
JJ: 5
Boc: 6
Curtis: 7
All over the place
lol this movie is so weird - I actually own it. I received it as a gift and it took me a while to watch. I'm glad I did but just super strange.
