Nope, thumb is a finger, but a finger is not necessarily a thumb.

Plus, in your example, the alligator is eating the thumb. That's gonna lead to a toe transplant.

There is nothing enlightened or evolutionary about calling a thumb only a thumb and not also a finger. If anything, it's breaking scientific classification rules to make a new category for something that doesn't require one. It's like saying a possum isn't a marsupial because marsupials only live in the Southern Hemisphere, despite the fact that it meets the classification standards otherwise. Don't make the possum a frindle.

Certain things transcend their original classification. Back in the late 90’s all flowers were reclassified by their dna when originally they were classified by appearance. Maybe this is our late 90’s vlady. Reclassify the thumb to save the world!

But there is zero reason to, other than you don't *want* it to be a finger. That's not reason enough. You have to make a compelling argument for why it is not a specialized finger. You don't just change classification on whimsy.
