Most of them don't like the social commentary and give it 5 or 6 out of 10.

Another reason why letterboxd’s ratings are the way to go
Currently sitting at a 3.9/5 which is high for LB

tbf I can see the criticism of this possibly influencing the next round of mass shooters. Without having actually seen it the whole theme seems to be blaming society for pushing a poor misunderstood man to the brink, leaving him only to get his 'revenge' and burn it all down
...but I also don't see that as something to give the movie a negative review for, that's moreso something that should be left to the thinkpieces

i may not be as plugged into, like, incel eliot rodger-culture as i should be, but i cant imagine this movie will be the mass shooter bible people think. for one joaquin is just doing the master performance but plus like, adam sandler as the waterboy. and the gross joker hype hit critical mass with jared leto sending his suicide squad castmates used condoms.

idk, Taxi Driver inspired Hinckley and Ledger's Joker inspired the Aurora shooter, and this p much combines those two worlds. And that was before the current climate of mass shootings every few months

so this was something. King of Comedy it was NOT, but it still stood on its own well enough. Phoenix lives up to the hype for sure (tho I think I'll always be partial to Ledger's Joker as my fav performance)
|
was actually surprised they leaned into the comic aspect as much as they did, was not expecting to see the Wayne murder AGAIN. That last shot of Bruce was p good, kinda makes me want to see a twenty years later follow-up to this now
I definitely LIKED the movie overall, it's just a shame that it really could've been a masterpiece with Joaquin's performance if only it had a stronger script. It got way too on-the-nose most of the time, most obviously the "joke" on the late night show that spells out exactly what the movie's theme is. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! And even minor stuff like the reveal that he actually didn't have a relationship with his neighbor, the "You're Arthur from down the hall, right?" line was really all that was needed but instead they had to show the whole clip show of her disappearing from every scene. Just felt pretty dumbed down for what they seemed to want to be a "serious"/"important" movie
BUT ANYWAY YA it was good! Even though I feel like I don't have much more to point to than Phoenix's performance, but that alone was worth seeing this for and easily carried the whole thing. The plot beats were fairly predictable but it was well-executed, the direction itself was definitely solid |

hey man, I agree with every word of this
|
I thought it was solid, I liked it. I wanted to l o o o o o v e it but didn't which is too bad. It was ALMOST great but there was something that wasn't quite there, I dunno what
It certainly wasn't Joaquin who was lacking tho, TELL YA THAT MUCH! My boy held it down, he was really great. I really can't compare this with Ledger's, their takes are way too different. Ledger's feels more perfectly comic booky while Joaquin's certainly feels more like a genuine person. I think they were both pitch perfect. I loved Joaquin's swagger by the end when he was full transformed, the makeup and costume worked so well
But the script was certainly...not subtle! Could've been something really memorable if someone better suited for the material wrote it, so that's a shame
I kinda wish it ended on the shot of him spreading his blood into a smile, that was perfect. Though I loved the "you wouldn't get it" line that followed and him darting back and forth down the hall so that's fine. But boi did I love that smile shot
I lol'd at Justin Theroux's tiny tiny cameo. Quite a few small cameos from different people I like actually. Including v funny comedian Gary Gulman
Random thought, I loved the "I hope my death makes more cents than my life" line. Other random thought, the "life is a comedy not a tragedy etc" line was much better in the trailer sadly
All in all it was good but sadly not great. I support a Joaquin Oscar nomination fully and so far he's prob deserving of the win in my eyes, no one else is coming to mind to topple him for me |
