So glad I watched 4 and 5 back to back, that cliffhanger/tease would have annoyed me.

Only two episodes left.
And I still don't know whether to post in here or the main TD topic. Early in the season I had hopes of it hitting the high of S1 and it looked like it was going to for a bit. I'm still enjoying the mystery, but it's missing the sense of... dread? I guess? that the first season had. Where it was like, true crime horror or something. It had almost a paranormal feeling.
This one gave a taste of that early on, but it appears to be shaping up to be pretty standard. At least it seems that way. I can't decide who my favorite actor in this season is. Hays, Roland, and Tom Purcell's actors are all knocking it out of the park.
|
A week or two ago I read an article someone wrote on their theory about what's going on, and the write up concluded with this passage:
"Lucy, Tom, Will, and Julie Purcell all shared an unhappy home on Shoepick Lane. (The camera has lingered on that street sign more than once.) In Nic Pizzolatto’s home state of Louisiana, there’s an alternative name for bowfins, which are considered largely flavorless, “trash” fish. The Cajuns call them “choupiques,” pronounced guess how? Intriguingly, choupiques are commercially harvested for their roe to produce Cajun caviar. A “trash” fish with extremely valuable eggs? Gotcha."
With the latest episode, Hoyt and the pink room reveal I'd be surprised if it played out any other way than "rich people conspiring to steal children from white trash". |

Tonight's episode delivered some dread. The score is so good. Like in the scene with Hays and Roland pulling up to the barn. Curious to see what all comes to light in the finale next Sunday. Also I was unreasonably happy to see Season 1 get mentioned, and the newspaper with Rust and Marty on the cover.
I think I'm gonna rewatch S1 soon.

Agreed @ the score, especially that one part. I heard that and was like OOOOO some shit is about to go DOWWWWWWWN
Poor Tom. Scoot is a great actor, he stole nearly all of his scenes
That was Michael Rooker's unmistakable voice on the phone at the end. Him as the big bad appearing in just the finale is exciting

So excited for the finale tomorrow night.
Scoot McNairy is definitely someone I will pay more attention to going forward. Not that I ignored him before... but he DELIVERED with this role. And yup! That voice is unmistakable.
Watch them do a bait and switch and have it be Luis Guzman with Rooker's voice.

Verdict: A little underwhelmed. Well, maybe just... whelmed.
Was fine, and was at pace with the rest of the season. There just wasn't a whole lot of mystery left and I guess that's the main pull for me when it comes down to it. It's weird that the show does feel like it lost something with Scoot's exit, when he wasn't a main-main character. Still... better than season 2. I know that isn't saying much for most people. Still far below Season 1 despite my early excitement. I'm going to start that Season 1 rewatch this week for sure.
Two of my favorite parts of tonight's episode:
|
"If you don't wanna live with it... fuckin' don't." Roland says to the one-eyed black dude as they leave his house. Basically telling him to kill himself because they weren't going to bring him to justice. Thought it was cold and hilarious.
And Wayne's "I was doin real good with no head-shittin birds around here" to his wife during one of their arguments. |
It was a different angle to take on a story like this but I feel like it only barely worked out in the end. Or maybe the nuance was lost on me, or I was only half-watching this last episode.

I was definitely also......whelmed
|
Their convo after solving the case summed up my thoughts
Roland: now that it’s over do you feel...closure?
Purple: ...no
Roland: me neither
Me: me neither
I did love the scene with him finding Julie but then forgetting why he was there. That was really brutal and a good culmination of the memory loss story
Also loved Roland brawling in the bar and shit talking that couple. Then after with the dog. And in the present when he called the black guy a “cyclops mother fucker”. Dorff was a surprising highlight this season, I’ve never seen him better but I’ve also definitely never seen him in anything other than Blade and his electronic cigarette commercials. So
I’m guilty of half watching the episode though tbb. I paid attention during the mystery heavy parts but found myself zoning a bit during Purple’s convos with his wife, so that was dumb of me but it was surprisingly just not holding my attention
Could’ve used more ROOKER too! And I agree, I missed Tom and would’ve liked a final scene in the finale
If season one and two are at polar ends then this one lands somewhere right in the middle. Obviously closer to s1 than s2 but s1 will just always stand so high above the rest. I started rewatching it as this season was starting which might’ve hurt this season in comparison tbh |

LB does this really stupid thing with tv. They’ve got really random episodes of seasons or tv shows on there. Like the Black Mirror episodes I get but still don’t like their inclusion, but they also have like...Band of Brothers as a 12 or whatever hour long movie? And things like the entire recent season of Twin Peaks, any HBO mini series, each Sherlock episode, and other worse examples that I can’t remember
It irrationally bothers me. However, Nathan for You: Findinf Frances is one of the best reviewed “movies” of all time on Letterboxd so that makes it all worth it

Go on LB and filter by highest rated of all time, you’ll see what I mean. A breaking bad behind the scenes video is like the fourth highest rated movie of all time. I wish they’d get rid of that shit

This slight by Letterboxd has be wanting to pick a fight with the toughest guy in a bar Roland style, just to feel something

Whelmed, too

I was hoping for more but expecting what we got, kinda. Such good characters - I really liked the season.. I just came away with an ... oh, okay. That's what I thought.
Also, I did like the -"If you don't wanna live with it... fuckin' don't." answer to the guy who wants to die (or be taken into custody), cause wtf you are a jerk. |

Also, I was flipping back and forth between the finale & the Oscars so it was kind of cool to see Mahershala Ali get a best supporting actor award for Green Book while the finale was going on.
