The first game is so much fun.
I don't care much for the second one at all, though. |
Agreed, I barely remember it but I definitely remember being let down at the time. I just read part of an article trying to convince people that it’s actually the best of the series and it made some interesting points. I’m excited to play it again without the hype and massive expectations

They're my planned Summer games at the moment. It's too hard to find time to play any story games / series with the way my schedule is right now. I had intended to finish up Mass Effect Andromeda over this Christmas break but that fell through.
Going to start this my first day after school ends. I'll make sure someone holds me accountable.

Neptune's design is great, I love the nautical theme following the fucked up medical one. It's not quite as dark on the surface but it's a cool level and you get to know a lot of the secondary characters via audio tapes. Sullivan the head of security, McDonagh the contractor, Dr. Tenenbaum, crazy Peach Wilkins, and ofc the start of Fontaine's war with Ryan. Good shit
Saddest audio tape this time goes to Mariska Lutz. First you hear about how Ryan takes away her daughter and she fears she might become a Little Sister. Then the second tape is found on her corpse. It's about how she ran into her daughter who was now a Little Sister and she couldn't recognize her anymore. Her and her husband are found dead in bed next to a bunch of pills and a picture of their daughter, fucked up
Forgot how much of a bitch the Spider Splicers can be. I'm relearning the careful balance between using plasmids and using weapons, its been fun
RIP Peach. He put up a good fight. RIP Atlas' family, they didn't
Smuggler's Hideout was a short one but I'm not gonna get into Arcana tonight. That + whatever's after will be tomorrow |

Finally finished installing this tonight, sat down to play it for a bit. I turned the lights off and put on my headphones
5 mins in...
:wikey: This was a mistake
This game is actually pretty scary! And going in not knowing a damn thing meant I was even wary of the first crazed person I ran into. I honestly thought the first level would involve dodging a few lunatics and taking the elevator to safety. So I was pretty pissed when I learnt I had to take on Big Daddy, after fighting my way through god knows how many floors.
I died about 10 times during the first level, most of those deaths occurring during the Big Daddy fight (didn't help I ran out of ammo and found myself beating him with a wrench).
Excellent start though. I like that instead of playing a lame tutorial, you are thrown straight in at the deep end and forced to work everything out as you go, with your vocal guide the only source of help. That really added to the immersion. I felt as scared and confused as the main character.
One of my fav moments so far: When you are sneaking around the morgue area and all the lights go out, followed by a creepy noise up ahead. Then you investigate and it turns out nobody is there.
Also, yeah, I like the way he just injects that shit into his arm, lol. I thought I'd died when that first happened.
Perhaps my only complaint is that the seemingly infinite respawns detract from the tension a bit. Like, when fighting Big Daddy, it was tense as fuck, but after the first few deaths it was just a matter of hammering away at him. Didn't help that no matter how many times I died, the damage I did to enemies remained.
Is that specific to the first level?
In case anybody is wondering, I spared both little girls and took less ADAM. I fully intend to spare any I encounter, but we shall see how long that lasts!
Also, just started Neptune's Bounty. Just when I thought I'd found safety, that fucker won't let me in.
What a cunt!
Overall: If the intro is anything to go by, it's a great game. Getting Fallout and STALKER vibes from it. Love the setting and the concept, very unique. |

Headphones and lights off is definitely the way to play
If I could give any tip to new players it'd be to really listen to those audio tapes. Find as many as you can and stop walking for a few seconds to listen to it unfold, it's so worth it. They tell mini stories but also come together to form the full picture of what happened to Rapture before you showed up

Yeah that's a p. fair complaint, it's like that throughout the whole series. But to be fair I could see it being ridiculously hard otherwise. It's easy to run out of ammo or ADAM so if you blow through all your ammo on a Big Daddy and he kills you, the dent you put in him is kinda necessary. Otherwise you really will be whacking at them with the wrench all game which would blow. I can see how it takes some of the tension out though |

Fun levels. Again the design is perfect. Putting the medical level, the nautical level, and the botany level back to back to back was a good call, they all feel really different from each other but still fit perfectly in Rapture. I liked the idea behind this one, that Rapture would need something to generate oxygen and pump it through the city so they could all live down there. It fleshes the world out and makes it feel more real
Houdini Splicers had a fun sp00000ky introduction
I found a secret room and it had nothing in it except for a dead cat.
Also the flashes of ghosts was explained for the first time (I think). A side effect of the plasmids, someone else's memory getting passed on to me. Cool stuff
Found a final(?) sad diary from Mariska Lutz about her daughter being freaked out by the trees since she had never seen one before
More good stuff from Tenenbaum and got to meet Langford before she died. Good character. I liked her final moment of defiantly writing the code on the glass so I could get the trees growing again
Farmer's Market was a pretty brief level but had a cool design too. Not much expansion from audio tapes, just more about Tenenbaum but some of it was fucked up, good stuff
Fort Frolic and Hephaestus next |

Best level so far. I love the choice to cut the player off from Atlas and Ryan which is something I didn't actually remember, it's allllllll Sander Cohen and it's for the best. Cohen is so good. The perfect example of a twisted campy over the top Bioshock villain, he's my favorite
Design of the level was top notch. Loved the different shops and the art on the walls. Killing and photographing his four protegees was a fun change of pace
Not much in the way of other characters via audio tapes but that's fine since Cohen is such a strong one
After I finished and he was standing next to me, I actually forgot if you could kill him or not so I took a shot at him (I'm finding myself forgetting a lot, it's been ages). Turns out you can! He put up no fight at all, I nailed him in the head with a crossbow bolt. I actually think I remember something about not killing him but I won't spoil that. Pretty sure I've gone with that option each time I've played
Saving Hephaestus for tomorrow |

I've become very grateful for the infinite respawns after playing some more. It'd drive me crazy if I had to keep fighting Big Daddy's from scratch! I've died at least once fighting every single one so far lol.
Ammo is a bitch to conserve. You know you are getting desperate when you are resorting to throwing frozen fish at security bots (:
So I've started using my powers more. Telekinesis is probs my fav so far.
I accidentally harvested one of the Little Sisters. H and L are so close together, and it's hard to see in the dark. I hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the ass.
Nvm
Oh, and I'm starting to love Andrew Ryan. The magnificent bastard is always one step ahead. |

Btw, I take back what I said about infinite lives killing the tension. I still crap myself every time I hear a Big Daddy approaching. Twice on the Arcadia level, I had to hide from them due to lack of ammo/health.
On one occasion, I was hiding and the little sister saw me as she turned the corner. That was a real 'oh fuck' moment. |

I've been having to relearn the balance between ammo and plasmids after I kept running low on ammo. I'm not very good at switching to antipersonnel or anti armor or electric ammo at all, I gotta get better at that. But I've been having fun mixing different plasmids together and resorting to those over weapons

Hephaestus: Theme of this level wasn't as immediately interesting as the previous few but it was still cool. Cool to see the inner workings of the city and get more audio diaries about how it was built and run. I like that Ryan's office is way down there too, all the way on the ocean floor instead of way up high in the luxury apartments
I don't remember appreciating McDonagh as a character as much the first times playing through, but he was better this time around. He built half of Rapture and then saw Ryan slowly but surely go power mad and start to destroy it so he decided to try to assassinate him. Sad to see him pinned up in Ryan's trophy hall, that location was great
Ryan was perfect in this one, we heard the most from him by far throughout the level
I liked the relics of the dead Big Daddies littered in different places throughout it
AND THENNNNNNNNN OFC the big twist, which I won't even go into right now in case any of these fucks decided to click into this tag without having finished the level yet. If you just did that and you're reading this, shame on you. SHAME ON YOU
But I will say that it's fucking great and shocked me like crazy the first time I played. I bet at the time it was the first major twist I had come across in a video game. I don't remember any other games around that time being so story driven and well written. I remember my jaw dropping the first time I realized what was going on, it's so well executed. And the big Ryan scene was really great too
I love the Little Sisters showing up when it's all going to hell to lead you to safety |

I am going through this mostly blind however I did watch a play through of this game right around when it first came out. I was in a Bioshock mafia and didn't think I'd ever play it so I wanted clarity on flavor and characters. This was 10 years ago and I really don't remember shit off the top of my head. Oddly I vividly remembered the Steinman fight as it happened and I remember the choice of saving or killing the little sisters. I don't remember the effect of doing one or the other though so I suppose that's good!
I'm playing Remastered and so far I've encountered no issues whatsoever. The game looks great. I absolutely love the style. I'm a gigantic fan of the Fallout series for it's vintage atmosphere and music and I really get that vibe from this game as well, which is a very good thing.
I got fucked up during the Steinman fight as I ran out of plasma, had very little ammo, no health packs left and am garbage at FPS. I did kill him with a sliver of health left which was very nice however! Then the Big Daddy fight happened. And all I have is a wrench. And it is not a good time. So I rage quit to read what everyone had to say about this joyous game! As shitty as damage staying after death is, I'm kinda happy to hear that I'm going to kill that Big Daddy one way or another when I play again tomorrow.
I saved the Little Sister. Really dug all the Sister/Daddy moments that the game has had so far. I'm usually shit at collecting but I am making a serious effort to find all the tapes, which I also enjoy.
Good stuff so far though. Thanks Santa. |

Man did this game get hard overnight. Post-twist starts to get real tough. Fontaine keeps lowering your health and later he fucks up your plasmids so you keep getting one randomized one. I ran real low on ammo during these levels. Always had a full wallet but when you buy a handful of ammo it drains it so fast
Good shit with Tenenbaum and Fontaine taunting you the whole time. He makes for a really good villain post-Ryan
I liked entering the apartments of some of the major side characters, that was fun. Cohen's was my favorite ofc and you got to find the body of
The abandoned apartment was fucked up, it had a couple and their three daughters dead on the couches from suicide
A lot more from Suchong who is great. The end of the last one had the incredibly sad audio tape where he makes the little kid break his dog's neck to test the mind control. Fucking BRUTAL! But he gets what he deserves because you find his body later with a Big Daddy drill still steaming and in his back. Great moment
Also came across Culpepper's body after Sullivan killed her. Not a big character but a sad ending for her
Apollo Square was cool, I like how some of the lower class apartments were re-purposed for Atlas' rebellion during the civil war. It was nice seeing Atlas' headquarters and finding the place where all the Atlas propaganda was posted. You also find Diane McClintock's body after she walks in on Atlas recording a diary in his Fontaine voice, he must've killed her right after
Design of the two places wasn't as interesting as others before it but it was fun to see one level housing the powerful and one housing the poor
Point Prometheus tomorrow. Might end up finishing the game then, I don't think I have much left |
