I just looked it up. The creator meant it to be pronounced JIF, some kind of wordplay of Jif commercials. The graphics argument also seems to have a flaw in it. Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) would be pronounced JFEG if GIF has to be pronounced with a hard G because of the Graphics word. That being said, it just feels wrong saying JIF instead of GIF.

Every single thing in this post is correct.

That has nothing to do with it. You don't necessarily pronounce an acronym based on the words it stands for. The acronym has its own pronunciation in itself. Also, see creator pronunciation. Also, did not read whatever your link was but it has nothing to do with this either.

I feel like the word "Gif" has transcended its own definition at this point.

It's no longer a GIF, it's a GIFF.

Did some more digging.

While the creator insists for it to be pronounced JIF, according to experts at Oxford the natural and correct way to pronounce the word is GIF. Most one-syllalbe words have a hard-G.

I didn't say change the pronunciation. I said the INTENT of something doesn't always make it so.

He calls it Jif. I call it gif. So his intention isn't really my reality.

The poll question is how is it pronounced, not what is the right pronunciation. To me, it's pronounced gif
