p. good one. I was hoping for something...unexpected, but it was pretty much how everyone predicted it would be to the letter which is really disappointing, especially considering I had no idea what would happen throughout Castle Black/Hardhome in comparison
Castle Black>Hardhome>Winterfell for me
It was still shot and produced amazingly well tho, it was really gripping. POOR RICKON! That part was really brutal. This director should be handed the series tbh
Hate that Ramsay died, it was just so obvious from the start and from the way they wrote Roose out so quickly. All signs pointed too directly to just cutting this plotline out completely so it's a shame they didn't subvert our expectations and find a way to keep Ramsey alive at least, I would've loved to see that. He was just such a good character/actor/presence. WHAT WILL THIS POST-JOFF/RAMSEY WORLD LOOK LIKE??????
So glad Davos and Tormund survived

As far as how I think I'd compare this to the other big battles:
CHARACTER WORK:
Blackwater > Castle Black >>> Hardhome > Winterfell
PURE ACTION:
Winterfell > Castle Black > Hardhome >>>>> Blackwater

Dany is a menace who must be stopped. I hope Tyrion stabs her in the back like Jamie and the mad king

I think this show feels too good versus evil now. Instead of multiple different factions each with their flaws.
Maybe that will change. That's why I am not tired of the Sparrows story line yet because unlike the battle last night I legitimately don't know who is going to make it out alive. Like period I feel like Cersei/Tommen/Margery are all at risk.

Rickon being as tall as Ramsey was pretty great too | "So, uh, what are we saying here? If we save LA from a nuclear bomb, then you and I can get together for dinner and a movie?"

The books still have Euron. The show has some dude who has the name, don''t recognize the personality though. The real Euron is even more menacing then Ramsay and Joffrey (esp after that twow sample chapter).
Also some other female villain who is out for blood... hehe *sigh*
But BESIDES the fact that the books are still infitinely better, I loved the battle. We finally got a real battle on the field, which was pretty awesome to see!

I still personally believe that Jon will not be resurrected in the books, but warg into Ghost. The battle at Winterfell will still happen (but not under Jon's command).
The recruiting session was done by Jon, Sansa and Davos in the show (our heroes..). Whereas in the books it's The North (Wyman Manderly) and Davos. Wyman sends Davos to Skaagos to obtain Rickon, who went there with Osha/Shaggydog after they left Bran/Hodor/Meera/Jojen/Summer.
Skagos is a mystical island feared by outsiders due to the savage cannibals who reside on the island. Many myths claim there to be unicorns as well. But anyways, after Davos goes there, he does obtain Rickon -whatever happens on Skagos is unknown, many theories suggest Osha dies on there-, whatever happens, Rickon returns to the Northern lands, and rides in on the back of Shaggydog leading an army of cannibals and unicorns. Wyman will have arranged a big Northern army, and they obliterate Ramsay's forces. Ghost (Jon) may come to the rescue as well. Shaggydog will most likely die in that battle.
That's atleast my theory. Jon has a whole bunch of viewer connection, so it's logical they'd use him for the battle instead of the theorized Rickon in the books. |
But besides that, even though the show stream-lined ALOT of the Northern storyline, it was still satisfying to watch the climax.
The Meereen stuff did indeed feel rushed. (Daenerys riding Drogon through all the fighting made me slightly giddy though)
|
]Victarion spends atleast 4 chapters on his way to Meereen, 2 of which are on the coasts of it. Plus he has dragonbinder. |
I dunno what the show was thinking leaving that particular 'instrument' out, very anti-climatic. But anyways, the fact that they didn't even show Theon and Yara arrive with their ships was really stupid as well, it probably would have been better to maybe have kept that for the finale? S1 would have for sure shown how they came into the city during unrest.
I liked the Dany/Asha (Yara) dialogue. I feel like Asha was amazingly cast, and fits the personality perfectly. Still bummed about the name change to Yara, but that's truly a nit-pick though.
Overall a very stellar episode. Although predictable, it was satisfying to watch. Hardhome and Blackwater are probably still ranked higher (For me personally).

I thought Dany's constant smirk to Yara during the girl power moment was incredibly cringeworthy
