Nobody ever says "I'm going to have a hotdog sandwich for lunch." I also don't think it matters about the buns, as much as what's inside. A burger is a burger because there's a patty between the buns. A hotdog is a hotdog because that's what it is. lol

I think I've had this discussion before on another online forum years ago, I think the discussion was whether hamburger bread was a sandwich or not.

Sandwich: an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with a filling between them, eaten as a light meal.

It's one piece of bread -> not a sandwich

Technically subs aren't sandwiches either.

But you can make a grilled cheese dog (but I think it's silly).

This is really a grey area because if you start call hot dogs sandwiches then couldn't things like calzones be sandwiches too?

I used to eat them without any bread or buns. Then I started reading them only between two orders of sliced bread with butter. As a child they were both. The bun makes it an anomaly
