Saw it last night and unsurprisingly really liked it. Got to see it in 70mm too
|
I just can't get enough of Tarantino's slow builds of tension. The first half was the best part of the movie for me, and it was almost entirely characters talking in a horse carriage and a cabin
It was definitely his darkest movie, I think every character that shows up on screen gets killed by the end. I dunno if I'd necessarily complain about there not being a more conclusive ending (as far as there being a point to it all), because it definitely was an interesting choice, but it did leave me feeling empty
Best moment: Daisy's brother getting his head blown off just after their sentimental moment. I knew something was gonna happen the way it was being filmed, but did not see that coming. Everyone just started laughing in disbelief
As usual the performances were great across the board. Especially Jackson, Russell, Goggins, and Leigh. I'd never even heard of Jennifer Jason Leigh before this but that character was so good. I think if I had to pick a favorite it'd be Russell though
As far as the 70mm goes...it was a cool experience, but I don't think I'd jump to do it again. If you're a huge film geek I could see them getting more out of it, but stuff like the faint whirring of the film, occasional film grain, no trailers, overture at the beginning, etc didn't really do much for me. I'd have to see the movie in digital to compare the cinematography though, but I can't imagine 70mm looked THAT much better
The intermission was a pretty cool touch though. It happened right after the scene where the General gets killed, which was the perfect point to break. And then the narration as soon as it starts back up with all the "15 minutes ago" references was great, I'm wondering if they had that in the regular version? I feel like it wouldn't make much sense |
overall I'd go:
1. Inglourious Basterds
2. Django Unchained
3. Hateful Eight
4. Pulp Fiction
5. Reservoir Dogs
6. Jackie Brown
haven't seen Pulp/Reservoir/Jackie in a long time though

looking forward to it. I don't even know whether they can show this 70 mm gimmick here...lucky to see the movie in english in theatres at all. | "There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."

Just saw this tonight. It was a good movie. Won't say anymore for now because I'm a bit drunk. Typing is hard

I went into this film knowing absolutely nothing about it. I never watched the trailer, nor did I read the synopsis. All I knew about it going in was that it was a Western themed Tarantino film and that Ennio Morricone was doing the score. Which sounded awesome.
It wasn't what I was expecting. And that's not a complaint, it's just that I was anticipating a very different kind of movie based on what little I knew going in. Knowing it was a Western, and that Ennio Morricone was doing the score, I was expecting a Tarantino style Spaghetti Western. Fistful of Dollars on crack or something. But it was more like:
|
The Western version of Reservoir Dogs. |
Which turned out to be a pretty good concept too!
I liked it. Probably a tad longer than it needed to be imo, but the tension was maintained very well throughout. It was entertaining, the story was solid and the cast were great. Ditto on Goggins, he was the highlight for me. I was excited when I saw his name in the opening credits.

I'm jealous that I didn't get to see it in 70mm! I don't believe any cinemas near me are doing it. Also, we didn't get an intermission either, but we did manage to guess correctly where it was supposed to be. Which reminds me:
|
I loved the narration which came in at that point. That was Tarantino right? Sounded like him. |
I also forgot to mention this in my previous post, but regarding the score by Morricone...was anybody else underwhelmed? It seemed as though there was only one memorable theme, and that was used throughout most of the movie. And even then, it was only reasonably good.
Still, it's hard to complain too much about the score when they are an afterthought in most other movies nowadays!

I was expecting a much grander score by him but I also thought it'd be a much grander movie overall, Spaghetti Western style like you said. I think his score fit the mood pretty perfectly, anything that really stood out might've been distracting
They also used unused tracks from the original The Thing which is real cool. That's one of my favorite horror movies

I really liked the score when they were outside setting up the posts to the outhouse and the music keeps ramping up more and more until it suddenly cuts to the cabin. Other than that I didn't notice it much
