[Paranormal - Possession]
|
“Don’t read it! It’s called the Book of the Dead for a reason!”
Solid! Well paced and brisk once it really gets going. Setting change works really well and was probably necessary, I remember being nervous when it was announced that it’d be set in a high rise but they did a good job of cutting them off and isolating them. Title card was perfect
Thought they could’ve gone a lot more ham with the tattoo needle and cheese grater among other things, the 2013 version sure would’ve. It’s a step below that one for me but it’s still appropriately mean spirited and more fun than the average modern possession movie. Alyssa Sutherland deadite is an all timer. Wish a certain third act creature actually did something nasty, that was a bit of a letdown
Features roughly 87 too many split diopter shots instead of adding something new or creative, but what can you do. I liked the drone joke shot at the start at least, plus the peephole sequence was cool
My least favorite of the franchise, but that’s how consistent it is for me (most consistent horror franchise? Prob). Still a fun time! Gimme one about the third book set on an 18th century ship or something
★★★½ pretty good!/well executed

“The house was a monument to evil sitting there all these years holding the essence of evil in its smoldering bones.”
Comforting. Aged better than most King adaptations.

[Misc - Anthology]
|
“Evisceration takes at least an hour.”
Consistent enough anthology. Wraparound story didn’t have enough to it but the three main tales were all solid.
Cat From Hell >>> Lot 249 > Lover’s Vow (probably better than Lot but the twist was way too predictable)
Good gore throughout, but the cat down the throat stole the show.
★★★ average/good/interesting concept

[Killer - Slasher]
|
“You got a problem here guy?”
Ehhh, more of a slog to get through than I was expecting. I’ll always welcome more but I do think franchise fatigue is setting in for me, which is bad news for a meta franchise that’s supposed to be trying to reinvent itself. Felt super formulaic outside of the opening twist. I just think they could use a big structure overhaul somehow
It has some good sequences, the train, ladder, bodega. But the kills weren’t all that unique. And it had no balls at all, cheapening stab wounds makes everything feel less severe. Six returning characters and all six lived, five new suspects and three were ghostface lol. They seemed to have no interest in hiding who the killers were, the whodunnit aspect wasn’t there at all for me
Cringey dialogue too, worse than usual. I hope the 7th one rounds out the Sam/Tara trilogy and any subsequent ones are standalone. New casts, no legacy characters, no motives tied to previous movies etc. I know it’s the signature of the series but it’s starting to bog things down for me
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas

I dozed off once or twice. Cool poster and fun goopy monster design though

“The clouds are swirling. There will be tears shed over the bay.”
A couple of great kills. Unfortunately I could barely hear any dialogue and it happened to be the most complicated slasher I’ve ever seen
Friday the 13th franchise owes this its life

[Paranormal - Supernatural]
|
“You are either in possession of a very new human ability... or a very old one.”
Weirdly straightforward for Cronenberg + King. Would’ve liked to see him adapt almost anything else from King instead
Kinda wish it was about the hunt for the serial killer the whole time, the creepy scissor suicide was the highlight. I did love Martin Sheen, but Walken and Skerritt solving some eerie crimes together would’ve been dope
It was good but I wish it had more of an edge. Really liked Walken in it though
Just made me wanna rewatch Unbreakable

“I heard it was the hand of a satanist. And the other hand is just out there.”
Really dug it. Some good scares, great sound design, a unique portal/Ouija spin, and I loved the final shot. The big scene in the middle was perfect“I heard it was the hand of a satanist. And the other hand is just out there.”

It was..fine I guess. But it didn’t do anything original/scary/creative at all. As run of the mill as a movie can get

[Misc - Found Footage]
|
“Freaking Mildred, she’s such a C!”
Fun! Liked it more than I thought I would. The annoying main character struck the perfect balance imo, ended up being surprisingly amusing. Kinda glad it stuck with comedy throughout and kept it relatively light and dumb. The bits about being an influence/being cancelled/stream chat were all amusing
Practical effects were a standout. And I liked the way they played around with the found footage genre, switched to other cameras, found a way to add music, etc
Ending could’ve been stronger
★★★½ pretty good!/well executed
