Hey guys it's me Anthony Fantano here. I just listened to this playlist and I have some obnoxious opinions to share with you:
Pink Horse Club - Chappell Roan - Was quite interesting for the first minute, thought it had potential, but the generic groove that kicks in at about 1:08 ruined it for me. Sort of sounds like something a 20 something year old girl would put on as background music while getting ready for a night out on the town. So not really my cup of tea. Also what's with the lyrics, is it about MLP fans or something? Points for making me speculate. I'm giving this one a 4/10.
UPDATE: Actually, 5/10 for the cool outro, I like that instrumental, it sounds a bit like a guitar solo, but synthy.
Coming Home - The Dangerous Summer
- Strong start, love that intro, the speed up effect thingy. Drums are good, probably the highlight of the song for me. They've got a When The Levee Breaks vibe going on, a very roomy rock sound. Not a huge fan of the vocal melody or the singers tone in general tbh, sounds too cleaned up, tuned etc. I'm just personally not a fan of that. This is another one where I like the outro...there's some 8-bit style thing happening there. Really cool. 6/10.
More Than Machines - Bush
- Excellent intro. Not a big fan of the vocals again, but musically I like it. Lyrics are good, I like the subject matter for sure. Some really nice guitar parts in this song too. The 'Nothing Changes' is really catchy, best part of the song for me. There's a really nice Jeff Beck style lick in that part, so that instantly makes this song a fav for me so far. Guitar solo is underwhelming, would have loved to hear something more in your face. 7/10 woud listen again.
Cloud Nine - The Temptations
What a legendary bassline. James Jamerson's sound is instantly recognizable. That said, I personally prefer The Temptations earlier stuff, this song surprised me, I wasn't expecting something so funky. I'm pretty sure I've heard of this song and the album it's named after, but I'd never checked it out before. Still, that bassline is amazing. 7/10
Elton Joan and Britney Shears - Hold Me Closer
I had managed to avoid listening to this until now. This really does not do it for me lol. Seems completely pointless, did not need to be made. I can't think of anything redeeming about this to mention, other than it is mercifully short, and that the original song is a classic. 2/10 I guess.
Small Leaks Sink Ships - Creepin'
30 seconds in and I dislike everything about this song. Really don't like the vocals, too wimpy. Drummer sounds like a robot high on crystal meth. The vocals somehow get worse as the song progresses. The only words I can make out in the lyrics are 'silver purple'? whatever that means. All in all, sounds like a band trying too hard to be different. I get that there is some worth in pushing the boundaries and being ultra experimental, but this really does nothing for me, it was difficult to listen to. Sorry, 1/10 for me.
Hang on Sloopy - The McCoys
Classic song. Sounds like Summer Nights from Greece borrowed heavily from this, that's what I always think when I hear it. Very catchy, great vocals. Gonna give it a 7/10 simply because it does sound a little dated production wise. I think there are quite a few other versions of this song. I read that The Yardbirds did a version with Jeff Beck for one, I wouldn't mind checking that out.
Bertrando's Wish - The Shepherds - It's obvious that our production quality is significantly lacking when I listen to my bands music alongside pro recordings. Everything just sounds a little muddy to me, and it lacks clarity somehow. Also, there are some questionable things that I left in on the final takes, especially on the vocals... no amount of mixing can get rid of that stuff. All that said, I'm glad that some of you have enjoyed the music we've put out this year! Appreciate you sharing this Herm!
Europa - Globus
Nice, a history lesson! Got nothing against this song, the lyric is good to be fair, though a bit on the nose. It's just not my type of music at all, and I feel like it's nothing I haven't heard before. 6/10
Sea Shanties - I'm not writing all those names
Love that this follows the previous song, seems appropriate. I have a playlist for English Classical Music on Spotify, and it's pretty much all I listen to these days. This medley is on it. The only downside is that it's so short. 9/10
Harry Styles - Daylight
I'm going to do my best to find something I like about this, because seeing the name of the performer made me want to instantly give it 0/10. I will try not to be biased and judge only the song: Ok I'm 30 seconds in. I like the synth sound and the beat, it's got a chilled out vibe. There's a line that is repeated a few times which goes something like 'If I was a bluebird I'd fly to you'. Pretty bad lol but who cares I guess, lyrics are irrelevant in songs like this. I like the parts where the heavy synth kicks in. It's actually a really well produced song. That's how I'd sum it up, in my opinion it's a mediocre song with great production. 6/10. Can't believe it.
Mailman Rosenhom - Eleanor Roosevelt
I can't be bothered to spell the song and artist name right. Ok first things first, I can't understand the language, and that makes me angry. All songs should be sang in English. Musically, it conjures up images of some depressing former Eastern Bloc shithole. Makes me think of the Doomer meme too. Kind of depressing. Not much going on musically that I can get into. 4/10 because there's nothing wrong with it, it's just not my thing.
Out of Mind - Magic Man
Drums are kind of cool. Pretty generic sounding song overall. Sounds like MGMT but not as good. The guitar part that kicks in around 2.25 is very nice. Best part of the song. 4/10
And the winners are: Temptations, Hang On Sloppy, and More Than Robots
Anyway thanks guys, Anthony Fantano signing off. Please subscribe and hit the like button. (Actually don't, that guy sucks)

There are a lot of people working on that Sea Shanty song!!! |
There certainly is, I'm not sure why though. As far as I can tell there are only three songs featured, and it sounds like it's performed by the same band. I recognize Edward Elgar's name, and Hubert Parry might be my most listened to artist this year. Not a clue how Handel ended up on that list. I imagine The Central Band of the Royal British Legion were the performers of this recording, hard to say for sure though.

While Bush has been around for a great while, this song only came out this past summer, so it wouldn't be an oldie...lol
