"Damnit," Rose shouted to herself as she noticed her tank was running on empty. "This always happens at the most inopportune of times. Ughh!"

Rose pulled her truck over to the side of the road. She was practically in the city by now. Almost. These roads seemed mostly abandoned. Of course they likely weren't. She still had to cross the bridge to enter NYC anyway.

Checking her mirrors, she exited the car. "Looks clear," she said to herself.

She closed her door behind her, shotgun in hand.

"HEY!" someone shouted. "DROP THE GUN. HANDS IN THE AIR!"

Rose carefully surveyed the area but she couldn't see anything. Once more the voice sounded. "I SAID DROP YOUR GODDAM GUN AND PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR! NOW! DO IT!"

Still she couldn't see the figure. Where the hell were they?

Quickly she leapt over the hood of her car and covered behind the truck. A shot went off, breaking the window nearest to her. Glass fell down on to her face but she was fine. Zombies were sure to have heard the gunshots go off though. They were coming.

Then she saw them. It was one person standing on top of the building across the street. She took a shot and it hit brick.

"Who's up there!?" she shouted.

"... You should've listened to me when I said to drop your goddamned gun, girl!"

"Who are you!?"

"What's it matter to you!? Names are nothing nowadays! The world is over! It's only a matter of time until we're all walkers."

"Not if I can find a way to make it all right again.... I think I know how....."

The man grinned. He was interested now. "Alright lady... back in the day they used to call me - AHHHHH." Gunshots went off. The man was under attack.

Rose peeked over the hood of the car as she saw the man falling from the building and down to the pavement below. She rushed over to him and kicked his gun away. He tried to stand up but she pointed her gun down at him. "Not so fast!"

Zombie grunts could be heard. "FUCK," Rose shouted.

A swarm of zombies rounded the corner and Rose began to let loose on them. The man stood up and reached into his pocket, pulling out a set of keys. He rushed to the door nearest to them and fumbled it in.

"INSIDE! LET'S GO GIRL!"

Rose ran inside with the man and slammed the door behind them. The zombies pounded away from the outside, but they were safe... for now...

Rose wiped the sweat from her head and turned to the man.

"So..... what's your name?"

The man grinned. "As I was trying to say.... My name's Bryce."

"Well, Bryce. Shoot at me again and I won't miss next time."

Bryce smiled. "Yeah okay lady, nice to meet you too."

Bryce kicked his boots up on to the table as he laid back in his chair.

"Glass of wine, girl?"

Rose frowned. "Why do you keep calling me that?"

"So no wine?"

"Of course I'll take a glass. But call me Rose. Please"

"HA, okay Rose! So here's the deal. You can live here with me, but there are rules. Every day you'll go out and bring back more supplies. At night- "

"... Let me stop you there, Bryce. I don't want to live here. I'm headed into the city. To my father's lab."

Bryce nodded. "You pappy's lab huh? What's so special about that place?"

"Before the phones went out, my father was already working on a cure. I need to see the labs, whether he's there or not."

Bryce bit his bottom lip. "Well... if you're gonna cross into the city then you're going to need to get over the bridge. You can't take the tunnels, not unless you want to die. So if you're going to cross over the bridge, which you are, then you're going to have to talk to the Operator."

Rose began to reload her gun. "The Operator?"

Bryce shook his head. "Yup, that's why they call him... Or, at least, what he calls himself. The Operator controls the bridge, the only one left into the city after the others fell."

"How do I find him?"

"Head to the bridge, you can't miss that ginger fuck!!"

"What's so bad about this guy?"

"He'll make you pay a toll....... one way.... or another."
