Sorry just trying to understand what your definition of a finger is since you are so sure a thumb is one |
Is your thumb not a terminating digit on your lower arm?

What if our hands were all thumbs? Just five thumbs on each hand. Would you still consider them fingers? |
Considering they are the terminating digits on our lower arms, yes.
|
So is that your definition of a finger? |
Much as the terminating digits on our lower legs are the toes, yes. Which is why the big toe, despite have thumb characteristics, is still a toe. And the thumb, while having special characteristics, is still a finger.
It's so simple a caveman could do it! And smart people like Voltaire knew we had ten fingers.
|
So you're saying the only difference between a toe and a finger is which limb it is on? |
Hell no. Nobody grabs a baby's fingers and does the "This little piggy" thing.
A chimp's are very similar, though, so that almost the major difference is which limb it is on.
|
So then you are saying that fingers and toes are not solely defined by being the terminating digit on a particular limb? |
Actually, by definition, yes, that is the defining characteristic. That does not make it the *only* characteristic. For example, people typically don't walk on their tippy fingers. But those are side characteristics, not defining ones.

So then, by that definition, that a finger is a terminating digit on your lower arm, and a toe is a terminating digit on your lower leg, if someone was to have a toe transplanted to their arm it would then be a finger.
From what you are telling me.

If there was a reason to do that, yes, it would technically become a finger.
It would be a stubby little finger and look like you had midget hands, but yes.

Though it looks like they are definitely fingers afterwards:

Looks like your "unique characteristics" are less so when the big toe is used for the thumb:

If your middle finger was the one that was opposable, it wouldn't make it any less of a finger. | |

And they then replace it with the big toe, with little change to use or even cosmetics. It's almost like the thumb is special in its placement and little else.
Mr. Cherrypick, I presume?

So the definition of a thumb is a digit that has the ability to touch each fingertip of the same hand. Since this is unique to a thumb because fingers are not capable of this, a thumb is not a finger. | SFWordsmith.com
