Everything Maddie said about it a few weeks ago is how I feel about it. The performances were superb, but the play feel didn't translate to the screen for me. Idk, just my own personal ranking. They were all great.
I'd recommend all the movies to anyone who asks tbh

I find it really interesting how much you liked Fences, Boc. I really liked it too, but you're the first person I've seen (online and including my offline friends) who liked Fences best of all the nominated movies they've seen, so I'm just really curious as to what it was about the film for you that made you rank it above all others.
Contrarily, Manchester by the Sea was my favorite of the year so I'm wondering what it was about Manchester by the Sea that kept you from liking it more?
Just asking out of genuine curiosity.
As for me, I have seen Hell or High Water or Hidden Figures, but out of the rest I've seen I'd say...
1. Manchester by the Sea
2. Moonlight
3. Fences
4. Lion
5. La La Land
6. Hacksaw Ridge
To be honest I loved all of the above--the last three aren't quite as definitive a ranking for me just because I find them so hard to compare. I think I especially liked Lion just because I loved the book so much and it's such an incredible real life story.

It's the only movie last year (at least the only Oscar-nominated movie - I reeeally liked Green Room and Nice Guys) that really wowed me. There were plenty of good movies last year but not a lot of GREAT ones
I totally get the criticism of the movie being too much like a play, but I didn't mind that aspect. I think Denzel was just very conscientious of not wanting to tinker with it too much because he knew the source material was already so good. And it opened up an opportunity for the actors to really shine, which they all did. Denzel and Viola obviously gave the best performances but I thought all the supporting cast was fantastic as well
As for Manchester, I guess it was similar to Fences in that it was an acting showcase, but unlike Fences I really didn't think the story was anything special. Like I get that the movie's thesis was basically "some things can never be undone", which is a pretty good counterpoint to a lot of Hollywood movies, but it also left me feeling like there wasn't much of a POINT of watching Affleck's journey. The character never really changes except for that slight silver lining at the end | |

I definitely agree with you about Fences. I'm a big fan of movies that are really heavy on dialogue and aren't super flashy, so I actually thought it was really refreshing to see a play adapted onto the big screen and I felt like it was cast perfectly to make the adaptation successful.
I kind of had the opposite reaction to Manchester by the Sea. It really resonated with me in a lot of ways, but maybe that's due to my own experiences with grief and loss. I just really liked what a raw human story it was. Without spoiling anything, I actually think Affleck's character grew a LOT in the movie, but it was all proportional to what he went through. I like that the message was more than just "some things can never be undone" but (I'm going to put the rest of this in spoiler tags just in case)

that even when someone experiences something so life-ruining that makes them feel like they have no point to life anymore can still show growth and let people in. Although we only saw what seemed to be a tiny change in his character at the end, for Lee himself that was huge, especially given everything he went through. I dunno, I just really liked the way the movie didn't give me everything I wanted--it just felt honest. |
My friend I saw it with had pretty much the same reaction you did to Manchester by the Sea. She liked it but felt like she didn't get enough from the end. I think it's definitely the kind of story that resonates with people in really different ways depending on personal experience. | "All this from a slice of gabagool?" |

We've been rewatching the collected works of David Lynch to prep for Twin Peaks coming back, especially while looking at it from the concept of them all being a "shared universe" with Black/lodge/White Lodge tied in. The recents:
both Seasons of Twin Peaks (skipping over anything in the second season related to James, Nadine, or Benjamin Horne being Robert E. Lee).
Fire Walk With Me- watching this on blue ray on our big screen was nuts. Still an awesome movie that has given us all kinds of lines we've used on our kids for years without them knowing where they come from. And obviously this is playing the Lodge concept to its fullest.
Blue Velvet- Still a goddamned awesome fucking movie. (still not enough swearing there to match Blue Velvet). There are obvious Lodge gate references, especially the red curtains Dorothy sings in front of and the similar red curtains in her apartment. Frank Booth is obviously something tied to the Black Lodge.
Mulholland Drive- Another great one and not just because the lesbian sex scenes. Cowboy appears to be a Lodge entity and Club Silencio is definitely a Lodge gate. The blue box also harks back to the similar puzzle box Catherine received in Twin Peaks. Naomi Watts is in the new season of TP, so curious if she'll be playing one of her two roles from this film or something else.
Inland Empire- This one needs some serious editing. The concept is interesting, but it falls flat because some of the "atmospheric" stuff is dragged out, along with certain scenes that become repetitive. The final scene after she disappears when she shows up again with all the prostitutes and meets up with Rita from Mulholland ties these up. With Laura Dern in the new TP season, the rumors are she'll be playing a new role rather than any of her former Lynch appearances.
We still have a few more to go- Wild At Heart, Lost highway, Erasurhead, etc.

Be prepared to start skipping stuff. If it seems unimportant, it probably is. Lynch got frustrated when the network pushed to have them reveal Laura's killer part of the way through the season, so it gets soap operaish with him away a bit. The Wyndom Earle stuff is good, though and ties back together when Lynch directs the final episode.
