"No, it's not. That's like saying "Hey, we shouldn't try to stop people from drunk driving because people will do it anyway."

No it's not like saying that
That's what you think it implies for some reason.

I've slept for 5 hours the past 48 hours and I CBF teaching how to think.

It is, because it says that this only happens from sociopaths and since sociopaths are already messed up, then we can't do anything. This goes way beyond sociopaths, because men do not realize how embedded some of the behavior is. Again, bringing up the UK Defense Minister touching a woman journalist's knee. Dudes say "That's not rape- this is no big deal!" except for the fact that it is. He'd *never* have done that to a dude, ever. And if a dude did it to him, he'd have freaked the fuck out.

It's like the rampant homophobia- saying shit like "the gays are recruiting" as if the only reason these guys aren't gay is because a gay guy never asked them out or something. Gay isn't a disease that gets passed from somebody to another- you either are or you aren't. But it's the culture we've established that allows shit like that.

The answer you get depends on if you ask a SJW or anyone else.

~~general disclaimer that i'm not trying to put words in anyone's mouth on either side here. the views i express are mine and not all SJWs and the views on the "opposite" side are random bits i've heard from various places, not just igor~~

not sure how much i have to contribute here that hasn't been said, but before i say this i'll say that i tend to agree with the points made by vlady/nofo overall.

I think the reason this debate gets so heated is because when people ask, "well how do we protect against false accusations?" it feels like you're changing the subject. it seems like in the face of evidence that a woman or a number of women have been assaulted by a man (ik this happens the other way around, or man -> man etc), your first response is, "well, what about the innocent men?" maybe the underlying question is, "what would happen if someone falsely accused me?" (someone has asked me this underlying in real life. this is not putting thoughts in anyone's mind who posts here.)

there is nothing wrong with asking the hard questions (like "what about false accusations"). they are questions that need to be answered. however, when you ask "what about false accusations?" it seems like you're avoiding other hard questions like, "how do we stop this culturally?" I think questions like that should be answered first. i don't have sources on hand to back this up but i'm pretty confident in claiming that there are more women out there who were assaulted and never came forward than men who have been falsely accused.

those paragraphs are a little more similar than i thought but it's late and i was distracted twice while typing this

I think this post does a lot of circling around the same thing, without it saying much substance. Saying that we should be critical of false accusations, especially with public figures, isn't ignoring the root of the problem. I think saying someone is innocent until proven guilty is essential in cases like this, as it is in all criminal cases.

If someone came to me and said they'd be sexually assaulted I believe them.
If I heard a good friend of mine was accused of sexual assault, I don't know if I'd believe it.
It's a tricky case, if you know them to be a stand up guy who's not really sleazy it can be hard to believe it.
But if it's someone that has maybe said a few loosey goosey things, then that changes.
The point is every case is a different circumstance and treating them all the same is pointless.

I agree that there definitely is a culture problem, but it's kind of blown out of proportion.
It's a noble idea that one day there will be no sexual assault ever, but in practice that's not realistic.
In reality there will always be scumbags that assault people, and that's just a fact.
I'd even argue that as time went on sexual assault has probably fallen as the country has gotten more liberal.

That case out of the UK is this most ridiculous thing I read about.

1. It was from 2002
2. She expressed she was uncomfortable with it and he stopped
3. She said it was not sexual harassment

Where did anyone in this thread mention gays and the military in terms of sexual assault? Just you buddy.

I didn't know either at first. Igor seems to use that term the most.

There's a lot of people on this board that like to get offended for the sake of being offended.
They don't even know what's so offensive about what they are getting riled up about.

Touching someone's knee without asking for permission first can't be rape, can it?

Wouldn't it be at worst sexual misconduct if it's persistent and he's like really touchy feely against her will.
