I've been watching a lot of movies lately, but one that stuck out a lot was Sling Blade a while back.. It was pretty amazing!
I think it struck home most with me due to the fact that I recently got a job working at a group home for the mentally challenged.
The job itself has been absolutely amazing - making those bonds with people has been just amazing, and I've met some extraordinary individuals. The bonds you make with those people is something that is quite unexplainable.
But, I felt Sling Blade had a perfect grasp on the disability, and Billy Bob Thornton was absolutely amazing as Karl. The character of Karl actually reminds me almost exactly of one of my clients. I learned to appreciate the movie and everything it did right since I've been working there.
I accidentally picked the Spanish dub version of Fury Road, but I didn't realize it until like ten minutes had passed. I just thought I'd misheard Immortan Joe or something because I was tired.
Arrival was definitely good, probably a top 5 movie for me so far this year. Though I was expecting a bit more (mostly from the ending)

All the communication scenes were incredibly captivating, which is impressive considering how little is actually going on on screen in those scenes. That methodical scene when they enter the shell for the first time was really well done, it got across this sense of grandeur really well. That and the scene where they race up to ask about the "Offer Weapon" line were my favorite parts
I also liked the design of the heptapods overall, mostly that they didn't give them typical traits like eyes or a mouth like most movies do. Felt much more 'realistic' that way
I think the main issue with the movie for me is the twist with the daughter doesn't really feel fully connected with the aliens plot. I get that Louise had to get the ability to see the future in order to fulfill the aliens' mission, but plot-wise that was really just to get through to the Chinese General, the stuff with the daughter kinda felt tacked on just to have a twist. It was pretty well done at least, that reveal with the play-doh heptapod and the mom/dad/bird drawing was a cool moment. And the moral conundrum at the end with her deciding to go through with that future despite knowing how it ends was interesting, but at the same time it all felt like it was the ending of a different movie
Really low-key and unique character study, thought it was good. Definitely feel like it'll stick with me for a while. I went into it knowing nothing about the story besides the way it's structured and think it was best that way (as are most movies really), seeing it unfold itself at its own pace
