GENRE SHOWDOWN: MONSTER
2018 average: 2.6
2019 average: 2.9
Favorite movie: Re-Animator
Least favorite movie: Wer
Both had movies that dragged them down, that's for sure. 2019 wins by a little bit. 2018's average is awwwwful. Might be the worst overall average? I'll find out shortly. Reallyyyy tough matchup between Thirst and Re-Animator for my favorite, but I think I'm giving it to Re-Animator. Such a fun and unique movie with one of my favorite characters between both sets of 39 in Dr. West. Worst movie is Wer without question. 2019 won the showdowns 7-3
Wer < THE HOWLING
Until Dark < THIRST
RE-ANIMATOR > Day of the Dead
Cujo < THE FOG
AFFLICTED > The Battery
GREMLINS > Critters
Vampyr < DRACULA
Shin Godzilla < THEM!
Splint < CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
Attack the Block < INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS

39. Critters
Talk about saving the best for last. My last two batches of movies completely reshaped my top ten THANKFULLY. Thirst, Possession, and The Skin I Live In all snuck into the top ten forcing out Body Snatchers, Love Witch, and Pulse. Them is the worst of the final four but it wasn't bad at all, it's chilling in the middle with the average, hard to rank movies
Midsommar holds onto the top spot pretty easily. It's the only 8/10 on my list. Nothing ended up being as shitty as Critters either, though it was tempting not to punish the miserable Santa Sangre and give it the bottom spot | |

FINAL SHOWDOWN
2018 Killer Average: 3.1

2019 Misc. Average: 2.9
2018 FINAL AVERAGE: 2.9
2019 FINAL AVERAGE: 2.7
Would ya loooooook at that. Even though 2019 won the showdowns, 2018 has a higher overall average by just .2. JUST GOES TO SHOW! Match-ups make all the difference. I'm still surprised 2019 caught up by the end but tbh, a handful of those matchups were almost too close to call and could've gone either way. Months from now you could ask me again and I might flip several of those
I was pretty down on the 2019 batch for quite awhile but that's just because I was getting all of the shit movies out of the way early. To me, 2018 was the clear winner but looking at the two lists side by side...I'm not sure. 2019 might have more highs for me. I think I like my 2019 top ten more and I also think 2019 might have more lows
A .2 difference in the end is pretty funny either way, I figured it'd be super close. It's a shame that both managed to fall under the awful 3.0 Letterboxd mark which also means the OVERALL average between both challenges is a 2.8, also below that mark. But I don't regret doing it this year at all. I'm definitely down to do it again next year. Maybe with a little more thought behind some of the picks. It's gonna be SLIM PICKINS for some of these genres, that's for sure
Favorite movie between both lists goes to Midsommar over Martyrs. It's close, but Midsommar takes it for me. Both are definitely among my favorite all time horror movies though so that's fun. Worst movie, of course, goes to Wer

Pretty fucking weird! Kind of wish I had a better idea of what was going on because the entire thing was pretty hard to follow. Felt like a, shock em for the sake of shocking them, sort of movie. This definitely have the same amount of narrative discipline as Audition. But hey, when you're the director of over a hundred movies, I guess you gotta get a little experimental!
SCOREBOARD
EXTREME. Antichrist v Gozu. Antichrist is a movie I don't ever want to rewatch, but there's an undeniable craft to it. S1 gets the point.

I really love the setting and tone of this. I agree somewhat with Curtis that it ended a little too early for me. For a movie that so effectively throws itself out there, the ending seemed a little too subtle. Really enjoyed the editing for this and the fact that we're in one location for the entire movie. The acting was great, you could really feel the offset tension of the environment.
SCOREBOARD
Madness and Paranoia. Jacob's Ladder v Berbian Sound Studio. My feelings for Jacob's Ladder are identical to Curtis's. I just wasn't as able to sink into it as much as I'd hoped. It felt a little too predictable and overstayed it's welcome, runtime-wise. Berbian might have underwhelmed in certain areas but I was still engaged for most of it. I'll give it to S2.

I thought this was great. The camera work creates this weird sense of chaos with the spinning and close ups. Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill are incredible. It's such a weird performance from both of them but it works. It's crazy to see Sam Neill so young. He's probably my favorite part of the movie.
I think the doppelganger reveal is a metaphor for the expectations they had on each other? Like, their deterioration was due to the fact that neither could be what the other wanted or truly needed? It would explain why the kid "drowned" himself at the end. Because divorce ruins a child's life, people!!!! AHHHHH
The tunnel scene is great. I wish it lasted a bit longer but I guess that's what YOUTUBE is for.

Possession! Prince of Darkness v Possession. I'll give it to the movie that has the word POSSESSION as the title. S2 gets the point. It comes down to the FINAL MOVIE!

Wow. Song Kang-oh is one of the most DIVERSE actors working today. Never thought I'd see his DICK!
As far as the movie goes, I don't have too much to say. I thought the slow pacing worked well. A lot of religious metaphors and the idea of our thin our faith really is when tested.
Dare I say this movie was quite EROTIC???? I loved the ending. What a brutal way to go out.
The movie's overall look felt super disciplined. I loved the few moments of humor sprinkled without (like the drowned husband showing up during sex) It was so abnormal. The whole movie was so abnormal.
SCOREBOARD
Vampire. Near Dark v Thirst. Alright, I really enjoyed Near Dark. Bill Paxton is incredible. There's some great action. It's a nice vampire flick. The only thing...the only thing that I could not stand, that I absolutely hated...was that fucking vampire kid. And because of him, I'm giving the point and VICTORY to S2.

Alright, I've finished my 39. Time to break down the genres. Since I only ranked these (not rate) I decided to calculate the average position that each genre landed on my list.
Here's my overall rank!
1. Midsommar
2. Thirst
3. Santa Sangre
4. Possession
5. Funny Games
6. Irreversible
7. The Haunting
8. Peeping Tom
9. Tigers Are Not Afraid
10. Carrie
11. The Love Witch
12. Invasion of the Body Snatchers
13. Dracula
14. Day of the Dead
15. Berberian Sound Studio
16. One Cut of the Dead
17. The Skin I Live In
18. Vampire's Kiss
19. Beyond the Black Rainbow
20. Creepshow
21. The Howling
22. Pet Sematary
23. Pulse
24. Creature from the Black Lagoon
25. Opera
26. The Battery
27. Gozu
28. Inside
29. The Beyond
30. The Horror of Dracula
31. Them!
32. As Above So Below
33. Critters
34. Neon Demon
35. The Perfection
36. Phantasm
37. The Fog
38. The Hills Have Eyes
39. Session 9
Genre Average
|
Gore & Disturbing Average - 33
The Perfection (35)
Phantasm (36)
The Neon Demon (34)
Gozu (27)
GORE! Not surprised. I feel like most gore horror movies use gore for the sake of gore. It feels mindless or very paper thin. My favorite horror movies with gore are ones that usually compliment with another element, usually comedy (Braindead, Evil Dead). |
|
Killer Average - 23.6
The Hills Have Eyes (38)
Peeping Tom (8)
Opera (25)
Killer! Funny how the three were so evenly spread out. Peeping Tom had a lot more going for it than a typical slasher movie would have. Hills Have Eyes felt very exploitative and Opera was just messy. |
|
Monster Average - 23
The Howling (21)
Thirst (2)
Day of the Dead (14)
The Fog (37)
The Battery (26)
Critters (33)
The Horror of Dracula (30)
Them! (31)
Creature from the Black Lagoon (24)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (12)
Monster! A decent showing. Thirst really carried the weight on the average while Fog, Them!, and Horror of Dracula dragged down due to their slow pacing and lack of activity. I think my top three are great examples of Monster horror being used to represent something (civil paranoia, abuse of religion, military control) |
|
Misc. Average - 18.75
One Cut of the Dead (16)
The Love Witch (11)
Pet Sematary (22)
The Skin I Live In (17)
Irreversible (6)
Creepshow (20)
Inside (28)
Vampire's Kiss (18)
As Above So Below (32)
Dracula (13)
Beyond the Black Rainbow (19)
Pulse (23)
It seems right for a category that's essentially all over the place. It's hard to really gain insight from a list like this because each one essentially is its own genre. The highest movie is probably the most experimental of the bunch. The lowest was found footage so... yea. |
|
Psychological Average - 15.5
Funny Games (5)
Santa Sangre (3)
Session 9 (39)
Berberian Sound Studio (15)
Psychological! This won last year, so it's not shocking for it to do so well again. Session 9 really FUCKED over the average. The setting was good on paper (which was one of the many reasons I disliked this movie, how do you fuck up a setting like this?) Idk. I think Psychological will always be my favorite genre of horror, but due to the movies selected for this 39, it just couldn't keep the crown. |
|
Paranormal Average - 10
Possession (4)
Midsommar (1)
Carrie (10)
The Haunting (7)
The Beyond (29)
Tigers are not Afraid (9)
Paranormal! Pretty dominant. 5/6 were in my top ten. The Beyond being my least favorite yet still escaping my bottom 10. I think a lot of these could also be passed as psychological horror, especially Midsommar, The Haunting, and Tigers are not Afraid. Paranormal and Psychological really compliment each other in terms of horror. Is the paranormal real or is the person crazy? That sort of thing. |
