I thought Jackie Brown was a little weak as far as Tarantino movies go. But yeah, De Niro was definitely the highlight.

Django Unchained is fucking amazing

Was on my way to see it this afternoon but my hungover friend puked on the way so we turned back :(

I saw Les Mis last night...... holy shit I LOVED it.

HEAT - a masterpiece, from the beginning to the end!

Went and saw DJANGO today (wasn't there a thread for that somewhere? I couldn't find it... maybe it was just on EN)

Anyway, it was sooo good.

There were a lot of hilarious moments. The "raid" scene with the masks probably being the funniest. I also loved the scene in the small town where the sheriff gets shot. And that ending. So badass. My adrenaline was pumping all the way through the last 15ish minutes. Also loved the soundtrack. The hip hop scattered throughout really worked perfectly. Only part I was a little disappointed with was Calvin Candie. I mean, he was GOOD, but I expected more. He wasn't all that memorable. Django and the dentist were definitely the best characters. I also thought Broomhilda could've been fleshed out a LITTLE more. She wasn't really much of a character.

Most of the stuff that wasn't related to the brutality of slavery (which was rendered horrifyingly by Tarantino) was pretty funny, usually enough to get a chuckle out of me. A lot of it was just weird character stuff, like Don Johnson's character not knowing how to treat Django, or the Marshall they meet hanging a squirrel on his porch. It was just little quirks that made the world feel real. Yeah, everything after Schultz' death pretty much had me on a high. Django finally becoming the badass the movie had set up for 3 hours, becoming a BLOODY AVENGING ANGEL, was so satisfying. I was worried initially that it would end with him surrendering himself. When the movie returned, I was actually a bit confused, and then it just did an amazing heroic turnaround with him rescuing Broomhilda and destroying Candieland. The soundtrack was beautiful. The character themes were awesome and appropriate, and even more anachronistic and seemingly dissonant stuff like JIM CROCE and RICK ROSS just felt totally perfect and established their moments as memorable. I thought DiCaprio's performance was brilliant. Just a wealthy, stupid, incestuous kid who can speak eloquently but bases his whole life on an idiotic philosophy. It was intense but left less of an impression on me than Foxx, Waltz, and Jackson SPEAKING OF JACKSON holy fuck. He creates a character at once hideously repellent, the ultimate symbol of the damage of the slave industry, and almost sympathetic. His devotion to Candie, to running the plantation with cruelty, just reflects an incredibly broken person, who has spent his 70 years being considered worthless. Of course, he was the brains behind the outfit in the end, but he was emotionally damaged. And while I agree that Washington should have been given more time (I believe the 5-hour cut has a plotline with her), she gives a wonderful performance. Despite having like 4 lines, she is very good at making her presence felt physically, even though a lot of it is in response to being tortured. I think a less skilled actor would have probably made the brutality (the branding, being in the box, getting Candie's blood on her face) less impacting.

for the scene where Candie slams his fist on the dinner table, DiCaprio actually cut his hand on accident. So the part where he rubs the blood all over Broomhilda's face was completely real and improvised. Wow.

lol I've just never seen it, Henry! I was waiting to see if there would be a THIRD and then get the whole trilogy pack but since that's seemingly untrue I will just have to watch it at some point in the near future.

As for my criteria, I try to keep it just how much I enjoyed/was engaged with the film, plus objective feelings about its actual quality. Like, if I enjoyed more than the car chase in Death Proof, it would probably be somewhere in the middle, but never at the top because it is deliberately not a good movie

Clearly one of Tarantino's best works. As far as acting goes: Waltz nailed it again, Di Caprio went through the roof and Jackson played the shit out of that character. Bruce Dern out of nowhere was awesome too. Foxx playing the angry guy out for revenge was pretty much the best choice of black actors for the movie imo. Couldn't picture some other "nigger" playing Django right now. Don Johnson, Jonah Hill, lol'd. Awesome Cast really. Franco Nero "I know..." The dialogue was amazing, but that was no surprise was it? The images were vivid. Editing, camera swings, reflections and shadow techniques, musical score, etc....SPOT ON. And oh men the action sequences, pretty much EPIC. Damn fine work really. A masterpiece, hands down. Now about the "tone" of the movie, and what may lie beneath it for some of the audience. That racism/slavery/history aspect. It's not easy for me to describe what I want to say so excuse me if it might be difficult to understand. I try to keep it short and not too complicated. Well, the frequent usage of the word nigger was somewhat magical I thought. Somewhat hit a nerve without hitting a nerve?! Felt like saying the word has never been a big deal, if you could take your thought of history as it unraveled. Throughout the movie the word was used a lot and in general how blacks were degraded was serious stuff I thought. It was like a coin Tarantino was flipping forth and back during the movie. You felt it was okay and natural, just as it was the "white men's" understanding at that time (and unfortunately still is to this day), but then again you felt it was disgusting and made you sick or angry (kinda like today, if you give it some thought). At least that's how I saw it. Waltz portrayed that so well I thought. He was chipping in when it felt "natural" to say nigger but he felt that disgusting side to it mostly. The whole movie there had been short reliefs of anger that kind of arose with those slavery shit, as in crackers getting shot/killed, but during the last hour the anger increased more and didn't vent. Shit got ugly and real again. It was time to stand up and do something about it and Waltz did it. His little speech about Alexandre Dumas was awesome. The way he denied shaking Di Caprio's hand, the self respect and rebellion he impersonated, was strong. He finally "broke the ice". I thought it had a pretty strong touch to it, due to his character being german. That's if you take history into consideration and how germans are mostly portrayed as spineless racists who turned a blind eye towards all of it back then. I certainly did see it from that point of view for a moment. Then I asked myself what you, HUPU, were thinking about all of that history/racism/slavery "identifying/recognizing"-aspect. If you felt it was portrayed well and honest, and/or if you looked at it from a "personal roots" and more global background-angle at all. I could understand if you give a fuck about color and are annoyed if people ask you about it, just 'cause of the fact that you're black. Maybe you have less or just about no interest in taking part of that silly game at all, kinda like me.

James Remar did really play 2 parts. I wasn't sure, but IMDB says he did. I wonder why.
