I don't think I ever said. I went into the game expecting Mexico to put up a fight but Germany to stomp all over them.

That's ROUGH for Germany. So many chances in that moment there.

Ochoa is SO good.

That was a game-winning save by him just now. WHEW.

With the amount of self-goals, anytime a defender heads the ball near the direction of their own goal I get so scared.

Germany pulling out literally ALL the stops in that last corner.

Neuer doing the most that last minute. Taking matters into his own hands. “I CAN’T RELY ON YOU PLEBS LET ME JUST SCORE A FUCKING GOAL!”

What a moment it would have been if he'd done it, though.

I never would have guessed they could blank Germany that was a tough effort by MExico.

Ok so little background, my brother (one of my pig questions for Pig 20) is 4 years younger than I am. We both grew up on soccer. When we moved to Alabama it was my senior year, so i only got to play one year here. He was in 8th grade, my parents retired here, he played all 4 years. He was good, his last year he was on a record setting goals pace for awhile.

Fast forward many years later and this doctor in town who has a little club team is going through certification or something and won't have time to coach. One of the kids on the team , his dad goes to our church, he suggest asking my brother to coach. My brother (Rodg) asks me to help and away we go.

So the age is like 10-12 years old. Some good, some terrible. We luckily have a goalie already so that helps. And we have enough good players to put everyone up the center and the not so great people on the outside.

So first year we win the league. Second year (i'm saying year but we played year round so 3 seasons is 1.5 years) i think we won again. We were good in reg season and terrible in tournaments.
3rd year we lost to this other Dr.s team and we knew that was coming. So last thing for us is going down to the tournament in Montgomery. We have to play 3 teams, including one from our league that we beat in reg season, but every year they beat us in tournament. We beat them to make the final and I'm pumped.

Get to the final game.....ugh. I look across the field and i see the other team has cloned the same kid like 12 times. Smart choice cause that kid was good. I'm looking at our team with our 2 really good kids, 2 decent guys, and a hodgepodge of others and thinking "we are in trouble".
Adding to this is one of the worst fields i've ever seen. One side of the field no joke slopes down like if i set the ball at midfield it would roll that way. Add to that the wind is blowing that way and you could legit score from midfield if you hit it right. So we ended up going that way for the first half. I told my brother we needed like a 3 goal lead at least to survive this game.

First half ends, we are up 1-0. I told my brother we were done.

Second half goes just like you'd think. They spend the whole half shooting at our goal. The wind against us makes it hard to clear. Their skill level is killing us. they hit the bar a couple times including one strike where our goalie didn't even move and it hit up and away. Our players were exhausted and our one sub on the bench was so horrible i couldn't put him in for more than a few minutes at a time. I felt terrible the last time he came out he just gave me this sad look but what could i do?
Our best skill player (coaches son) was center mid, when we got tired we just moved him up front and moved out striker back. Second half he actually got a shot off that hit the post, my heart jumped.

At one point my brother was yelling and screaming and i just sat down on the ground. There were no moves we could do just hope to survive.

Final whistle goes off...we win 1-0. I couldn't believe it. Parents jumping around laughing. One screams "It was all worth it!" I felt bad for the other team, they were clearly better and would probably beat us 9 out of 10 games. But for one day, we were good enough.

It is amazing how Switzerland can produce so many enthusiastic but ineffective strikers.
