Creep
Guy takes a job on Craigslist to go to a cabin and film a day in the life of a cancer survivor now dying of a brain tumor that wants to make a diary for his unborn son. It's kinda slow, but it's appropriate for the story and really creepy the entire way. There are quite a few jump scares which I don't think the movie really needed to keep using because it was unnerving enough as it was. It also manages to be pretty funny at times. |
Just watched it finally. WHAT A GEM. I loved it
The layers of creepiness with Josef that kept getting peeled back were so well done and sometimes pretty funny in a ridiculous way. The ending was also perfect

I saw it on the Netflix new release queue yesterday and was tempted to watch it again. Creep was the perfect title for the movie, really. And Duplass was so good. Glad they changed it from Peachfuzz, even if I thought the mask was pretty creepy too. Especially the scene with him blocking the door and gyrating his hips like a... creep. I guess I'll put this ending stuff in spoilers, I dunno if anyone other than us gives a shit, but just in case.

I loved that shot of Aaron sitting on the bench with Josef coming up from behind and putting on the werewolf mask. The way he kept sneaking closer almost reminded me of something out of a cartoon, like he was going to pull out a giant mallet instead of the splitting axe.
I don't know why but up until he actually followed through with the swing I kind of trusted him to just stand there until Aaron turned and noticed him, as if he was just trying to scare him again. I guess I was conditioned to expect him to do that and then just give him a hug (the constant hugging was hilarious) to apologize.
It was great how as soon as the axe thudded into Aaron's head I remembered Josef's line from like the beginning of the movie where he said something like "tell me the truth, just for a second did you think I was gonna kill you with that axe?" |

lol yes. I was so fooled. I kept convincing myself that he was just trying to get into a position for Aaron to see him so he could scare him. My jaw dropped a bit after the swing. Loved the insanely packed closet of old bffs too |

Melancholia- Rating TBD
Well I'm pretty sure this movie was supposed to make me feel depressed, anxious, and counting the minutes for it to be over- and it succeeded. The music and generated art was beautiful.

I felt so much solace knowing the world was going to end, and I was relieved when it finally did. I can only admit that it's great filmmaking, but I have no idea how I feel about the film as a whole. Some things really irked me and I hated how irredeemable the characters were except for Michael.
Opinion has entirely changed on Kirsten Dunst. Excited to see her in Fargo now. |

Unfriended
I didn't expect to after watching the trailer way back when, but I actually liked this. Similar to The Den, it features a vengeful internet specter and takes place completely through Skype calls and Facebook instead of Chatroulette. The Den did a little more with the idea but it also branched out and went somewhere else with it by the end. This did a decent job while remaining focused on the constraints of the internet setting and the supernatural.

I've literally been watching Fred Astaire movies all day. I'll hear tap shoes in my sleep and my TV keeps trying to go to idle on me (fuck off, FIOS). You Were Never Lovlier is on right now.

Juice
Such a good movie although I could see where it was going plus it is an older film so I had heard a lot about it.
The Wood
Love me some Omar Epps. Not a great movie but an entertaining way to spend a couple hours. A hood version of a coming of age story and romance and growing up in the Wood
Snow on Tha Bluff
Wow. I love "found footage" movies and this one was good enough to have me questioning if any of it was actually real. Now it being a film I'm sure almost none of it was "real" at least the scenes involving crimes. But I believe it give a pretty accurate portrayal into the life of an average street dealer.
BMF: The Fall of a Hip Hop Drug Empire
Now this one caught me off guard. I had heard of Black Mafia Family in passing but I wasn't big into rap back in the early 2000s. To learn that a pretty successful hip hop entertainment group had a drug empire worth almost 300 million is crazy. You have to have your shit together in order to pull off something like that for as many years as they were active.

John Wick - fun! The story/characters were nothing too great, but the action choreography was the best I've seen in a while. Made sense when I read later that the director was a former stuntman
Trainwreck - meh. I liked the scenes with LeBron but I was surprised how boring and formulaic most of it was
The Gift - well-made but god was it depressing
