I thought it was pretty great
Those two FUCKS! I don't remember the last time I wanted to see horror villains die so brutally, god they were the worst (in the best way). The moment one gets blasted was awesome but I unfortunately knew about the rewind moment. Though I thought they were all three gonna die and THEN it was gonna rewind and they'd survive so that was a swerve, I was surprised that the little kid actually stayed dead at that part
Hands down the most brutal moment in the whole movie is that golf ball rolling into the doorway. Such a simple but effectively chilling bit, I loved it. I was like AW HELLL NAWWWWWW
The beginning with them slowly forcing their way in was almost overwhelming. I enjoy a good home invasion movie and this one is certainly up there. Great stuff, almost went with an 8/10. Also I watched a side by side of the shot for shot remake and....why? Especially since it's the same director. Super weird but whatev
Also the fourth wall breaks worked for me. A strange choice but I didn't mind them one bit
★★★½ very good/well executed
Psychological: Home Invasion: Danggggg, Wait Until Dark was a similarly chilling home invasion movie. The leap is so classic, but this movie unnerved me way more from start to finish. Going with Funny Games

I read that his entire reason for doing it was so that it'd actually be seen by a wider audience. Def seems like it'd be mind-numbing to literally recreate everything shot-for-shot instead of reshooting the same script and doing some things at least slightly different. BUT HEY!

I ended up enjoying this way more than I thought I would. I didn't even realize how much I was digging it until the credits rolled and that GREAT theme blasted in
The production deserves the most props tbh. The set design, matte paintings, costumes, everything was on point. The gothic vibe was spot on and I particularly liked the editing and fun trickery shots, they loaded it with that shit
Oldman and Hopkins are great, I wish they had one on one scenes because that would've been a spectacle. And shoutout to my boy Cary Elwes as a fun supporting character, I've always liked him. Listen up, people need to leave Keanu ALOOOONE. Maybe his accent wasn't....perfect! But he is shit on so hardcore for his performance here, it's noted as the SINGLE worst casting choice of all time. I wouldn't go that far, but I have a soft spot for him. Ryder is shat on for this too but the two of them as a young naive couple being outperformed by Hopkins and Oldman kinda works for me in a way, it's not toooo different from the recent Barry Lyndon performance I defended. Sometimes bad acting...kinda works! I didn't find him distracting at the very least
I loved the trio of the other girl's suitors being so involved, they were fun. I like how they had no stake (ha ha!) in anything but stuck around to help. They reminded me a lot of the Americans in The Mummy who I also loved. Poor QUINCEY! I liked him :( . He reminded me of my favorite of the Americans in Mummy, the one who got swirled up in the sand and also sadly died
I especially liked how he depicted Dracula as slightly compassionate and just a tormented soul, like when he refused to turn Ryder and didn't wanna condemn her to his fate. That was a good choice and Oldman played it well
Also as I said I love this theme, especially when it blares in at the end (middle of the song): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi80O9uKB30
Thought I was going with a 6 the entire time I was watching it but WHAT THE HELL! It was enjoyable and well made. 7/10
★★★½ very good/well executed
Misc: Gothic Horror: This vs. The Devil's Backbone. EAAAASSSSYYYYYYY. I did not like Backbone one BIT. I find it incredibly overrated, it bored me to pieces. This also wipes the floor with it on the GOTHIC front, that's for sure. Dracula by miles. 2019 is right back in it

A pretty great batch. Three movies made my top ten and Funny Games snagged second. The one outlier is the snoozefest Beyond the Black Rainbow which is chilling with the stinker 4/10's at the bottom. I fiiiinally have a top ten that I feel good about which is a winning challenge imo |

Giant ANTS! They made such a huge point of keeping the public in the dark, that I thought the point of the movie was that they were only going to defeat the monsters by getting everyone involved. Characters felt a little flat (minus the scientist and her daughter who kind of took a backseat to the other characters later on.) The effects looked pretty good considering they the time period. I couldn't help but remember how engaged I was watching Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a movie made during the same time period, and how differently I felt watching this. It just didn't have a lot to keep my attention, unfortunately.
SCOREBOARD
Giant Monsters! Shin Godzilla v Them! Even though Shin Godzilla wasn't one of my favorites last year, I liked that it was a movie about a country trying to work together to overcome a seemingly impossible disaster. It felt meaningful. I think Them! tries to do something similar at times, but it doesn't translate as well. S1 gets the point.

What a flick! A lot of the production design is great. I love the costumes and make-up effects. I did not care for the special effects, they just did not age well. After seeing this story told so many times, this is easily my favorite rendition. It was nice to have more development with the Dracula character, it was easier to invest in the overall struggle.
Anthony Hopkins was wonderful. I love how blunt and carefree his character was at times. He was hilarious. Gary Oldman was great too. I love 90s Oldman, he's insane.
I love him, but Keanu Reeves is pretty terrible in this. I thought Winona was pretty bad too. Nothing about their performances seem to click, they always seem so forced. Every time Cary Elwes popped up on the screen, I couldn't help but wonder why on Earth he wasn't cast as Jonathan instead.
SCOREBOARD
GOTHIC HORROR! The Devil's Backbone was pretty underwhelming for me. Dracula, although having it's ups and downs, was very entertaining and kept my attention throughout. S2 GETS THE POINT!

It was aiiiiiiight. Actually if I'm being honest it was kinda stinky but it's a rare 5 that I don't really mind and didn't outright dislike. I thought it was fun enough even though it was heavilyyy flawed at times
There was some comedy throughout it that actually worked for me, it's subtle but it's there and it made it more fun. I laughed at DENNIS DUGAN aka Doug from Happy Gilmore (and the director) showing up and somehow becoming an actual thing in the final act. I was worried he'd die at the end, I was rooting for him. You know who else I was rooting for? His girl TERRI. She should've been the final girl tbh, I wanted to see her escape. Move OVER Dee Wallace! And yes the moment where she nonchalantly shrugs off her friend's brutal death as nothing more than a mere inconvenience was terrible and a shining example of why this movie isn't so hot
But the transformations from our THING boy were great. They clearly put all of their focus and budget straight into those moments and then they were like ah shit we need to write a movie around this don't we? The writing and editing were baaaad and awkward, there were so many weird cutaway insert moments? It was kinda bizarre. The effects deserved a better movie
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas
Monster - Werewolf: Good news, Howling! You get to go up against the absolute biggest piece of shit movie between both years COMBINED! Wer was a dumpster fire, and even though we made it a hilarious watch with the awful Eric and that one random cop who we loved, Howling still stomps all over it
That ties shit UP! 2018 was pulling away earlier but I was kinda getting some of the shitty ones out of the way early, its been all 2019 ever since. Could end up being fairly even by the end

What a crazy fucking movie. I'm glad this wasn't my Jodorowsky movie because I don't think I would have been ready for this. I watched Holy Mountain a few months ago, which was way more abstact and incoherent than Santa Sangre.
I was actually super into it. Maybe not as a "horror" movie but just a movie itself. I thought the imagery was crazy. The locations are great and the colors of the set really pop out. The music is wonky yet hypnotic. The violence is somewhat comical yet still has this piercing effect. It's very unique. Jodorowsky feels very similar to Lynch in a way, where I know I don't understand all that's going on, but it's still effective and motivates me for future rewatches.
This felt like a fucked-up version of Psycho meets Maniac meets Mulholland Drive. I don't even know how to talk about it.
Did I suspect that the mother wasn't real? Yeaaaa, but it didn't matter for me. The scenes where he's struggling to kill the women are insane. The whole thing is insane! That tattoo lady murder is BRUTAL, I wasn't ready for it.
I love the scene with the drug dealer dancing down the street with the mental patients. It's so ridiculous, and the music is perfect. I busted out laughing when he starts beating up the john.
The whole thing is chaotic but I loved it.
SCOREBOARD
FANATICISM. This was going up against my favorite movie from last year, MARTYRS! I knew it was going to be almost impossible to beat, and although Santa Sangre certainly was an entertaining experience, Martyrs is probably on my list of all time favorite horror movies. Point for S1. It only needs two more wins to seal the victory. It's not looking good for S2.

THE FINAL SIX! I decided to leave one from each genre category this year. My plan is to knock them all out in October. Looking at the final six, the good news is I don't see any of these dethroning Session 9 as the worst movie of the batch, but on the other hand, I don't know if any of these will beat Midsommar. Maybe Possession? I think I'm going to save Vampire's Kiss for last because out of all of these, it's the most I know the most about. I think it's least likely to be overhyped or disappointing.

Thirst [Monster - Vampire]
Ichi the Killer [Gore - Extreme]
Possession [Paranormal - Possession]
Peeping Tom [Killer - Slasher]
Vampire's Kiss [Misc - Comedy Horror]
The movie I'm most excited for - Possession
The movie I'm least excited for - Berberian Sound Studio
S1 18
S2 15
S1 only needs two more wins to clinch the victory. If I was a betting man, I'd say it's gonna get it, but who knows! I'd say half of these are going up against some of the S1 stinkers, so it's very possible for S2 to come from behind and win. We'll SEE!

Joins Black Rainbow and As Above So Below in an exclusive club where the best thing about them is their poster
It wasn't terrrrrible. Argento really found a formula that he likes sticking to! A bunch of side characters who you think aren't gonna be important each end up having their own 8 minute scene where they're all alone in their place and get brutally murdered. But I don't hate it, those are usually the best scenes of his movies anyway since the kills are so good
The scissor kill was good and the noise was gross, but that boyfriend kill was for sure my favorite. The first one that she had to watch. That kill was VICIOUS! The way the knife came outta nowhere up into his throat, and then the repeated stabbing. It looked so good. Brutal and messy. The needles under her eyes was fucked up
Much like Deep Red tho, everything outside of the kills was mostly forgettable. Move OVER Dee Wallace! We have a new final girl who gives LESS of a fuck about what's happening. That was all so weird. Her boyfriend just got brutally murdered in front of her and she just hops in the director's car and starts ranting about how opera singers are known for being promiscuous but she isn't like that. SHE EVEN SAID "someone once told me that opera singers like to have sex before performing..pfft!" UHHH YEAH, that someone was the guy who literally JUST died in front of her face less than five minutes ago and this is what you care about. That was so weird. And then again after the costume designer dies, she goes up to the police officer and talks to him for five minutes casually before being like oh btw the costume designer was just killed. Huuuuuuuuuh? AND THEN AGAIN! When the ravens attack the killer her and director are like aw helll ya! and then he shoots into the crowd and they scatter, and she walks into her dressing room, leaves the door open, and just sits down for a nice well deserved break. That was all so...dumb. I don't know why they made it so messy and stupid like that
Also the raven scene was dumb in general. I liked the raven POV shot flying around but that was about it. The raven handler had a throwaway like early in the movie that ravens never forget and that made the director confident enough to just unleash them upon his audience. It was silly. The whole ending was dumb
On a positive note, there were some pretty dope shots throughout it. There's this one quick shot in the wardrobe room where the camera pulls back away from the costume designer and sorta hovers over all these different props, it was really cool. Also I loved the peephole death
Could've been a six because of the kills but I'm settling with a five because of the lackluster plot. It's a strong five tho
★★½ mixed feelings/flawed but fine/some good ideas
Killer: Crime & Giallo: Man I barely REMEMBER Inferno now, but I still know I like it more than I liked this. I typically really enjoy myself with Argento's movies. 2018 breaks the tie and moves ahead again

KILLER GENRE AVERAGE - 2.5
Peeping Tom [Killer - Slasher] ★★★
Opera [Killer - Crime & Giallo] - ★★½
The Hills Have Eyes [Killer - Backwoods & Redneck] - ★★
I was planning on leaving one movie per category for the very end so I could finish all categories at once but whoooops, forgot that killer only had three categories and I thought Ichi was the fourth
Hills really brought this one down, not that it would've been too great to begin with. The most average average overall. 5/10 aka 2.5 on Letterboxd's scale which is...bad
Didn't love Peeping Tom as much as I wanted to but it's my favorite by default. Hills is for sure my least favorite
Next I'm gonna do a lil SHOWDOWN between both years

GENRE SHOWDOWN:
KILLER
2018 average: 3.16
2019 average: 2.5
Favorite movie:: Inferno
Least favorite movie: The Hills Have Eyes
The smallest subgenre with just three movies. 2018 (top row) for sure takes the win on this one. All three of these won their match-up. Inferno over Opera, Wolf Creek over Hills, Candyman over Peeping Tom. 2018 actually squeaked by with a passable (for horror) 3.16, while 2019 fell below the dreaded 3.0 Letterboxd mark
I can't think of anything else to do for this bit. I thought about best kill, best character, etc but I'll probably just do that again at the very end for all the 2019 movies. OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS
