I think Porl is trying to get us to use the gun this early in the game. I doubt it would be a good idea.

Maybe we can offer some inactive to the beast to leave us alone.

The bus shook as something smacked hard into the roof which was followed by another shriek. These things were ridiculous. Whatever they were, it was only a matter of time before they blasted through and hurt somebody. As the bus fell silent, henry sulked on the back.

There was another round of gunfire from up above followed by another falling shadow. The bus lurched on. Roth stared out of the window in thoughtful silence. They were almost at their destination.

Well, either

a) this use of the gun is scripted
or
b) there's multiple shots

2 guns? Maybe everyone didn't start out with no items.

But I doubt an item would be a gun if someone had an item to start off with.
