Actually, no. In fact, they operated pretty well together until the creation of the state of Israel. The Jews were persecuted in Europe all through the Middle Ages and beyond, but were treated pretty good in Palestine. In fact, a lot of Muslims in Palestine actually relied on a rabbi (Sachet) trained in the art of shechitah to ensure the meat they ate was halal.

The creation of Israel prompted the mess- and shoving a bunch of people out of their land tends to get people angry.

Well, different factions of peoples have been fighting over who that land belongs to since the dawn of time. The Romans forced a majority of the Jewish population out of the area some 2000 years ago, after which the Arab population eventually took over the area. When the Jews began moving back into the area in the early to mid 1900s, to escape persecution elsewhere and to return to their ancestral homeland, the Palestinian Arab leaders became alarmed and revolted against Britain, who controlled the area at the time, and the Jews. This coming after they revolted against the Ottoman Empire to gain their freedom initially. Both sides created their own militias waiting for the British to leave the area, and when they did the Jews declared the state of Israel and war broke out. The Arabs lost and many fled to the surrounding Arab nations.

There was fighting between Jews and Muslims from the moment the British mandate allowed Jewish settlement into Palestine. Arab factions tried many times to get the British to prevent further immigration, but the Balfour Declaration + later on the Holocaust made that impossible.
