Whoops, forgot to post. I will edit this eventually to make it look like my other posts/reviews - but I watched the Pet Sematary remake because I was at a friend's house when their cable went out so they let me pick a movie to watch. They had already watched it and hated it.
I'm not sure if my reception of it was tempered by the way they were acting towards it. There were things I liked and things I didn't. I kinda like the original (I think?) and the second one. Fred Gwynne was my favorite part of the original and Jon Lithgow in the same role is my favorite part of this one. I also liked that they juke you on the ending after more or less remaking the movie beat for beat for the first hour twenty.
Probably wouldn't watch it again, and wouldn't suggest it to anyone either but it wasn't a terrible movie. Just... nothing special.

I wasn't expecting to like this one just because I had heard that the sequel was far superior, and while I do think the sequel is better, this was actually pretty enjoyable. It definitely holds up for a 50's horror movie. The leads have great chemistry, there are some great shots, and the overall message/theme of the movie is one that's been redone countless times. This movie definitely feels like a pioneer.
I really didn't care for the beginning and end (basically anything with the lead outside of the town.) The ending felt so abrupt, like it wasn't sure how to end. I kept thinking how heartbreaking it would be for him to die on the highway, like he's trying to get there for so long, to warn people of what's happening, and then, in the end, he gets killed by a human. Might have been a bit nihilistic for back then but I think it'd be memorable.
Anyway! I love when old classics like this are able to still live up to expectations.
SCOREBOARD
ALIEN! Okay, so I actually didn't mind last year's Attack the Block. I really enjoyed the setting and most of the characters were pretty colorful, but it just felt a little messy. Some weird choices with the writing, and not too much behind its message.
This might be due more so to recentcy bias, but I'm giving the point to Body Snatchers.

This one of my most anticipated movies on the list. Right away you can understand why Del Toro praised it so much...because it genuinely feels like a movie he would make. The Pan's Labyrinth influence is uncanny. There are some great visuals in this, and the performances are great. My biggest pet peeve, however, was the constant shaking of the camera. It felt like every scene was shot on a handheld. It was hard to concentrate.
Some of the deaths were really shocking. I didn't expect Shine to go down at all. I thought the ending sequence was the best part of the movie. I felt like it really encompassed a lot of what the tone was going for.
Some of the visuals were very hit or miss for me. The blood trail felt a little forced at times. The fairy lizard also seemed a little random. I'm nitpicking here. I really enjoyed it, just thought the execution could have a been a bit tighter.
SCOREBOARD
GHOST AND SPIRITS! Tigers v Ringu! Ringu was maybe the 2nd most anticipated film from last year. It surprising did not resonate as well as I hoped. It might be nostalgia, but I still consider the American version to be more effective. Regardless there are still moments in Ringu that I found extremely effective. It's slow, dark, and doesn't lead you along as clearly as it's American remake, and I think that works really well in most ways. If it wasn't for that damn shaky cam, I think Tigers would have had a legitimate shot but you gotta believe me, it's pretty distracting. Ringu WINS!

Really fucking violent. Almost TOO violent. There's a scene where the intruder is playing with Sarah's cat. She pets it, it purrs, and then she snaps its neck. I couldn't help but think...why? What's the point of this. It feels like violence for the sake of violence.
That's what this movie is, essentially. The plot is wire-thin. Almost every character is meant to be introduced and killed off moments later. Yea the kills are brutal, yes the gore is wincing, but that's it. It feels mindless.
I did like when Sarah refused to let the intruder in when she gave that bullshit car excuse. It's always refreshing to see characters make REASONABLE decisions. Then she killed her mother! And while I thought the OOPSIE made more sense than the similar scene in Strangers, ya still HATE to see it.
SCOREBOARD
THE BATTLE OF THE FRENCH! Inside v Sheitan. I can't remember much about Sheitan but I do remember Vincent Cassel being so ridiculous, and the over looming feeling of what the fuck is going on? Because of that, warts n all, I'm going with Sheitan.

Just watched it and I agree, nothing special at all and p much no reason to make it. The first suffered from that early 90’s TV movie type glow and thus suffered from just basic post-2010 ooga booga noises and jump scares. It did nothing for me. Lithgow was the best part but Clarke was as fine as always. 5/10

I went in wanting to love this but man was hard to watch at times. Mandy was one of my favorite movies last year, and yea, I kind of knew what I was getting myself into but there is just not a lot happening in this movie. It's extremely slow, with little to no explanation of what's going on. I will say that Panos is really great at establishing a setting. It doesn't feel like you're watching a movie, more like you're having a fever dream. This and Mandy are so unique in what it does, but if you aren't into the style of it all, you're gonna have a bad time.
Things that I did love were the music, the cinematography, and the scene with the crawling man (which was really creepy.)
The narrative sort of shows itself in the final act. It's similar to Mandy in the fact that it tackles on toxic masculinity. Barry is such a fucking weirdo. The movie is basically him trying to control Elaine and having her as some sort of possession. I thought his death was perfect. Anticlimax, quick, embarrassing; everything that someone idolizing, or relating to, wouldn't want.
It's a trip.

How annoying was the entirety of the birthday scene out in the front yard? Did they REALLY need to set up a fake out there with both kids in the road? It was hilarious how convoluted it got. And the CGI for that scene was SO bad.
I know I said I think I like the original, but you're dead on with saying it feels like a TV movie. And even more accurate when you accuse this one of being everything tired in horror this decade. It's probably just nostalgia and my love for the asshole stepdad in the second one that props the 'series' up for me in my mind.

Was not too high on this, unfortunately. Most of the scenes felt very bland and uneventful. I did not like either character very much. Hey, I'm Mickey! I get angry! I reacted by saying FUCKING! I'm defensive! Fuck YOU! I'm Ben. I'm easy going but assertive. Ayyyye easy come easy go. Whatever.
This sounds weird out of context but the jack off scene was probably the best. It was the only thing that felt original yet oddly authentic? It was unsuspecting.
It's a fine flick but not one I'd ever consider rewatching. I've seen movies with just as much of a budget that are more dynamic and resourceful. This at times just feels lazy. Also, I HATED that gun sound effect.
SCOREBOARD
Virus! Last year was Afflicted, a presumed virus movie that turned out to be a vampire movie instead. What's great about Afflicted is that it has nothing to lose. If you can look past the nonsensical warts of it's found footage setting, it's actually a really entertaining horror movie. S1 gets the point.

It was pretty awful. The script probably could've fit on a cocktail napkin and yet was spread suuuuuuuuperrrrrrrrrr thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin into a two hour movie that somehow felt like a nine hour movie. I wanted to sleep the whole time. In fact, I did at one point!
I liked the lighting/atmosphere enough and the committed performance from BARRY. The positives pretty much end there
I enjoyed Mandy (MOSTLY thanks to Cage) so hopefully Panos can come out with something good for his third movie
Oh I do like the poster, that's probably the best thing about the movie
zzzzzzzzz
★★ disappointing/uninteresting
Misc - SciFi Horror: Jeeze. Scanners was THAT bad that I'm giving the point to Black Rainbow. Apparently sci-fi horror is hard to come by! This is probably the weakest matchup yet. 2019 wins it

At one point, a character in this movie says "beauty isn't everything, it's the only thing." I think that's what this movie wants you to believe. So much feels pointless...slow...corny...weird but HEY, the lighting is pretty cool!
The dialogue feels so forced. So many characters feel like over the top caricatures and add nothing to the story. I felt like the movie only picked up 15 minutes before it ended. It's crazy how much of a drop off there is between Drive and then this & Only God Forgives.
I really enjoyed the ending...I just wish the only movie was like that.
SCOREBOARD
CANNIBAL! I thought Ravenous was OKAY but had a lot of awkward choices in story and acting. Neon Demon is BARELY a cannibal movie, and is something I'd never want to watch again. I can at least see why Ravenous might be considered a cult favorite.
I can't in good conscious give the point to Neon Demon. S1 gets the point and is FOUR points away from clinching the win.

I wish I didn't know about the rape. I'd have really like to experience the whole movie blind, but WHATEVER. This was like experiencing a nightmare. At times you didn't know what was going on or where you were, but I was super into it. I think knowing Noe's style really helps with digesting this.
The performances are brutal. I can't imagine Bellucci having to do the tunnel scene more than once. The later scenes are so tragic with the context of the future. It's super heartbreaking.
Much like Enter the Void and Climax, this feels more like an experience than an actual film. I love Noe and his style. He's so unique.
SCOREBOARD
Revenge! I really enjoyed Sympathy for Lady Vengence. It's got a great story, solid acting, and an intense ending. However, I just thought that Irreversible was such a unique and dynamic vision. Obviously it's not a movie for everyone, but I have to give it the props of its design. S2 gets the point.

It was good! I think it definitely held up
Felt like an extended Twilight Zone episode but that's not a complaint. Gotta be one of the first stolen identity movies, if not the first? That's one of my favorite horror subgenres, that's why I love The Thing so much. It's FUUUUUUN. I do wish there was more of a lets try to guess who is human and who isn't element but whatev
I will say I definitely enjoyed the remake more. Now that I've seen both I'd go as far as to say that the Sutherland version is one of the best horror remakes I've seen? Not hard tbh, that's probably a very short list. But the remake expanded on it in every possible way, including a MUUUUUCH better ending. The ending to this one stunk. Apparently the writer/director wanted it to end with the lead on the highway screaming like a madman as trucks full of pods drove by but of course, HERE COMES THE STUDIO! They demanded a more optimistic ending so they added the lame shit at the end. Laaaaaaame
But yeah the remake's ending is a classic. And the way the female lead disintegrated into his arms has stuck with me, it's gnarly. Still sad when she turns here though but not the same impact
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Monster - Aliens: Last year was Attack the Block which was a pretty big disappointment for me. I still gave it a 6/10 like Body Snatchers, but I was hoping to like it a lot more than I did. On the other hand Body Snatchers held up well for a movie from the 50's AND a movie that I've already seen the very similar remake for. I had more fun watching it overall, point to 2019.

lol....I mean..
It was certainly entertaining! It doesn't try to be anything more than what it is. Cage's performance is...hilarious. Nothing short of incredible. Otherworldly
So many memes came from this one movie. It's nice to finally see the famous A, B, C, D! clip in context. His voice alone is priceless, but there are so many weird hilarious gestures he does throughout that really cracked me up. I was definitely entertained the whole way through and I loved the concept of him just hallucinating the entire thing. It was fun

Misc - Comedy Horror: Last year was Peter Jackson's The Frighteners. A middle of the pack movie for me last year just like Vampire's Kiss will be this year. Frighteners had its moments, some fun campy performances from legends like Combs and Dee Wallace. And joking about Michael J Fox's bad driving on Rabbit (@jacob) was hysterical, but overall I think I gotta give it to Vampire's Kiss. Frighteners' humor was kinda stupid and awkward at times (those two dumb ghosts) and it could've leaned into the B-movie camp a lot more. Sorry Petey! 2019 finally joins the double digits and starts to close the gap
