Blow Out

Really good thriller from Brian de Palma. John Travolta plays a sound technician for low-budget slasher movies and when he's out playing with his recording gear one night he captures audio of a car driving off the road that just so happens to be driven by an important political candidate in an upcoming election who gets killed in the accident. The media calls it a freak accident, but Travolta plays the audio back and thinks he hears evidence of foul play involved. Political conspiracies ensue. It's a really suspenseful movie and almost becomes Hitchcockian, especially at the end. I never knew that John Lithgow could be such a creep. I didn't care so much for the other de Palma movies I've seen (Carrie and Snake Eyes) but I thought this was really well-done. Of course now that I've mentioned de Palma I'm sure Henry will come in and mention Carlito's Way.

Boyhood. It's filmed over 12 years with the same actors/actresses. I really liked it.

That's the French movie right? I seem to remember liking it but I can't remember too much about it. Something about a guy whose wife goes missing?

Yup! Based on a Harlan Coban(?) novel. I had read a few of his books a long time ago and remember liking them a lot

I've sort of had a thing for space movies lately and this one has managed to elude me up until now. I thought it was really good. Movies like this, 2001, and Solaris have the most interesting depictions of alien intelligence in my opinion because instead of giving us some humanoid-looking weirdo as the alien it presents us with something that invokes wonder and questioning. I also enjoyed how it philosophically paralleled science and faith. Any other smart space movies I should seek out?

Read up about it briefly--sounds cool, I'll be sure to watch it. Thanks for the rec!

And I haven't been ignoring my other recs either, I just haven't gotten around to them.

I'd assume you've seen Sunshine already, but if not, definitely worth a watch

Yes, I've seen it. Can't remember much about it except the visuals were great, Rose Byrne was hot, and the movie took a weird shift in the last third or so. I also remember not really understanding it.

Serpico

I though it was pretty good. The real question is, does Al Pacino give a better performance in this, or Jack and Jill?

So I saw Babdook tonight and I made a thread about it, whoops.

But now I'm watching Housebound and HOLY shit is it amazing so far. I love horror/comedy movies, but most of them tend to be 80/20 when it comes to the splits (two notable examples- You're Next was like 80 horror/20 comedy, while Shaun of the Dead was like 80 comedy/20 horror) I thought this was the best blend. My favorite scene so far:

I will talk more about it and pretend someone is listening in real time.

Okay maybe it's like 80 comedy/20 horror. They keep playing ridiculously suspenseful horror music during comedic dialogue and it's brilliant.
