I'm excited for Dame but still mourning the loss of Jrue. Really wish they could've somehow traded Middleton instead. v sad |
I know that was a blockbuster deal and all, but I really don't understand why the Bucks went for it... The bucks lost so much defense trading Jrue...
Also:
|
they also gave up draft picks and Grayson Allen with no way to replace him.
the why is simple. Giannis said he was not willing to commit long term unless the team showed the same commitment. never mind that he was never going to sign an extension until next off season for financial reasons and has explicitly said as much. so the Bucks panic and re-sign an injured Middleton to a 2+1 with the 1 being a player option, this is a bad contract. they re-sign Lopez for 2 more years on a good value contract.
then they go and kill any other hope of future maneuvering ability by trading for Lillard who has this year, next year, the year after and then a player option all at the super max. all this combines to means the Bucks, who were already a super tax team, will be a super tax team next year no matter what they do and will probably be for at least 1 more year if they keep Giannis.
the reason this matters is that starting right after this seasons trade deadline super tax teams will not be allowed to aggregate salaries to match incoming salary. meaning they cant trade two players making $10m each for one player making $20m. this is in addition to the current limit on super tax teams of not being able to take back more salary in a trade then they send out. they also wont have access to the taxpayer mid level exception because they will be over the super tax and using that exception hard caps you below the super tax.
in conclusion: for the current season and next season, plus maybe the foreseeable future there options to sign players are super limited. they can re-sign there own players if they have the appropriate bird rights. sign there draft picks. sign players to vet minimum contracts, but not if that player was made a free agent via an in season buyout and previously made more then the non taxpayer mid level.

A new season always brings around hope and the knowledge that the T-Wolves will find another way to implode and disappoint.
Anthony Edwards is a star though.

I don't think the Jazz would trade Kessler straight up for Gobert right now, and that's before all those picks are even mentioned. What a terrible trade.

congrats to Boc and Benson. Giannis extending 2 years plus a player option, surprising since he is leaving money on the table not waiting until next year.

hey look the Pistons admitted they have spacing issues. it only took them losing 20 consecutive games to figure it out. who could have seen this coming? at least the Spurs have lost 17 in a row. everyone make sure to mark this game on your calendar https://www.nba.com/game/0022300519 as someone will have there streak snapped that night if it has not been already. bonus points for there second match up being the last game of the season.

I wonder how many games in a row they'd have to drop for Monty to get fired in his first year. There's gotta be a limit right?

im not familiar with there ownership situation so i dont know how willing they would be to eat all that money left on his contract. ok a quick Wiki dive says he can afford it and is a legit fan who immigrated to the area at a young age. that said it would be $65m+ and even for a billionaire that should give him pause. thought if there is offset language in the contract his next team might cover some of that amount.
lets look at the schedule... they have the Spurs on 1/10 and the Wizards on 1/15. if they lose out through those games then he is gone
