Pretty entertaining! It's insane how difficult it is to nail the Werewolf genre. I feel like American Werewolf in London is the undisputed king, but the Howling definitely isn't awful. The effects in this are outstanding, as expected from the GREAT Rob Bottin. I love Eddie's transformation. He looks so gangly and gross. It's gnarly. I also love the severed paw transforming into the human hand. Everything looks so great.
The story is pretty straight forward. My biggest problem was probably editing/writing. There just feels like so much was cut out. The group therapy scene could have been a great build up, yet we're thrown right into the middle of Dee freaking out.
Terry's death was so awkward, why not just cut earlier and have her death be revealed when Dee Wallace finds her. Speaking of which, that reaction to finding your close friend's mutilated corpse...YEESH DEE. I wish we had more development with the Eddie character. He felt like such a central piece of the puzzle but we didn't really know anything about him...then when he comes back, he gets killed off maybe 10 minutes later.
Regardless, there are some really great moments in this. Dick Miller's character is great for the 5 minutes he is on-screen.
SCOREBOARD
Last year was Wer. Fuck that movie! POINT FOR SEASON 2!

This was okayyyyyyy. It had classic King adaptation issues but they weren't as glaring as Pet Semetary or Cujo or nearly any other King adaptation. For how classic it is I wish I liked it more but tbh it's pretty much exactly what I expected, I didn't think I would love this one. It hurts that I've seen several key scenes
THE GOOD: The prom scene. Boyyyyy did this deliver, that scene was great and bumped the movie up a notch that's for sure. Sissy Spacek was pretty terrific. And the Tommy character, what a guy. Was he an asshole in the beginning in class? I zoned out. Either way by the end I liked that character. I'm glad he wasn't in on the prank and genuinely seemed to be trying to help her out despite protesting at first. I really loved the camera spinning shot while the two were dancing, kinda iffy on Tommy boy going in for the smooch but what can ya do! Him dying was sad, same with the teacher
THE BAD: I hated the GLOW the whole movie had, that was a bit annoying. I think the mother scenes could've been stronger too, I don't think we got enough time there. Her death was fine but I dunno, I wanted more from the home scenes. I didn't like Travolta and lead bully's death either, it was so FAST! She's standing in the road and next thing you know they're charging at her and next thing you know they're both dead. I wish there was more build up there, like a nice tense stare down on the road before they came barreling at her. Also that infamous jump scare at the end unfortunately had zero impact on me since I've seen it a few times over the years. It was probably good at the time
Overall it was fine. Spacey and prom scene made it worthwhile
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Paranormal - Supernatural: Carrie vs. The Orphanage. OOF! Thought maybe 2019 could snag a point here until I saw what the showdown was. The Orphanage was better for sure

New batch of five, new rank:
|
1. Midsommar
2. Day of the Dead
3. Creature From the Black Lagoon
4. Carrie
5. The Haunting
6. One Cut of the Dead
7. Dracula
8. The Perfection
9. As Above, So Below
10. Pet Semetary
11. The Fog
12. The Beyond
13. Phantasm
14. The Hills Have Eyes
15. Critters
Not the besssst batch. Carrie somehow sneaks into 4th place despite its average ranking. I need some better movies STAT! Beyond and Phantasm chill at the bottom where they will remain forever. I can't believe Phantasm isn't my least or second least favorite. That's rough
2018 CRUUUUSHED this third phase. It was tied 5-5 after my first ten but 2018 movies were better 5/5 times here. Yikes! |

Also it was an unfortunate choice to rip the Psycho shriek sound effects every time Carrie did anything | |

Fun fact! Robert Wise also directed West Side Story and The Sound of Music, two movies that are vastly different from the Haunting. For a 1963 haunted house movie, I thought this held up surprisingly well. The camera work is super dynamic, I love the overall feel that the house gives off. It creates a really eerie atmosphere. I love the scene in the bedroom with the door knocks. The sound design was super creepy. I was genuinely SPOOKED with the attic reveal and the wife running across the car at the end of the movie.
I thought the casting was great. Julie Harris was great. I thought the constant "inner thoughts were weird but ended up digging it because it helped further establish just how unstable Nelly was.
SCOREBOARD
The Haunting on the House on Haunted Hill House or whatever it was called, was a great concept on paper and had a few effective moments but overall I thought missed the mark on it's potential. I had a lot of fun watching the Haunting and felt that it was overall a much more consistent movie. Point for SEASON 2

High School sucks! For a movie that I knew almost everything about before watching, I was really engaged. Sissy Spacek was wonderful. She walks the perfect line between vulnerable and unstable. It's so heartbreaking to see the scenes where she feels like she's finally being accepted (only to know the inevitable tragedy that is to come). I love the chemistry between her and Tommy. It's so awkward but charming at the same time.
It's weird, you can kind of tell that this is a book adaptation, because you get the feeling that there is so much more to the story. A lot of characters felt underdeveloped and/or just kind of disappeared with no real closure. Certain deaths/moments felt so quick, you feel a little unsatisfied at times. I was really baffled by the ending, I just felt like there was so much that I missed or didn't really connect well to the rest of the movie.
SCOREBOARD
This was tough because in the moment I thought Carrie was a sure win but the more I remember The Orphanage the more I remember how much I enjoyed it. It just felt like a cleaner cut movie. I'm gonna give the edge to S1, but it was very close.

They're letting just anything become a cult classic these days huh? This was pretty stinky
I watched it the other day and already forget the details and what I wanted to say. I liked Peter Mullan. I liked the location (shoutout to creepy DANVERS, MASS!). I liked uhh....maybe that's it!
I appreciated the twisty ending with the Caruso fakeout I guess. And the earlier wife scenes taking on a new meaning with the twist. But overall it just makes no real sense at all. What's the point of the mental hospital creepiness like, at all? What's the point of the tapes? Are we supposed to assume that this Simon fellow corrupted Peter Mullan into doing all of this? But he def killed his wife and kid before they even got there so that makes no sense. IT MAKES NO SENSSSSSE. They totally wasted the perfectly creepy location and did nothing fun with it at all
It took 50 minutes for anything to even start happening. And nothing much ended up really happening in the end. All the deaths were off screen and exactly the same which was disappointing. They ALMOST did a good job of building up the characters a bit only for all their endings to be abrupt and the same, it was kinda lame
David Caruso continues to baffle me. Is he the worst actor ever or do I just not understand him? He's weird
The fuck you line was absolutely classic though. Honestly made the whole thing worth it
★★ disappointing/uninteresting

Oh hey a second Massachusetts related movie in a row. From Danvers to PITTSFIELD! That's where my buddy grew up
I didn't know this was gonna be a low/no-budget movie so it started off a little jarring. I was like oh boy, this is just gonna be an above average student film isn't it. It mostly proved me wrong. I feel like I'm holding this against it while also forgiving it because of it
Wikipedia tells me it was made with just $6,000 in 15 days and no script, scenes weren't planned ahead of time. I gotta forgive it for some acting/color/sound choices with all of that in mind. It's well made considering the budget
It's not reallyyyyy a horror movie which is what's nice about it, zombies are pushed to the back and it focuses on the two characters. It's like a lil low budget indie drama that happens to feature zombies
Both characters are pretty good. Mickey was a wimp and a clown but I liked him a lot more than Ben, I found him way more interesting. I really wish the roles were reversed and Ben was the one who had to get the keys and got bit, with Mickey vowing revenge against The Orchard. That'd have been way better imo. I was surprised and sad when Mickey came back bit, that was a bummer
Runtime was a little long, especially for a movie like this. You'd expect 80 minutes or something. It dragged at times and could've been slimmed down but I was never outright bored
A couple of standout scenes, like the very strange jacking off scene. That was certainly a first!
Cool poster, awful misleading tagline
Overall a fine time
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Monster - Virus: Aw man. Battery vs Afflicted. Tough break for The Battery but I gotta go with Afflicted. Two very similar low budget SMALLER movies by first time directors (I'm p sure). Afflicted was just more of a pleasant surprise and I think they did more with what they had. Though the budget is $6,000 vs $318,000 which is pretty crazy. Still, Afflicted was creative and a nice surprise last year. A weird matchup since Afflicted isn't a Zombie Virus movie at all which is what this category is supposed to be but o well! 2018 scores

That was...bloody!
Among the bloodiest movies we've watched between both years surely. The French are CRAZY! French extreme horror movies don't hold back
The gore was mostly great and brutal. Some real visceral violence, every stab felt ROUGH. That goofy dummy headshot aside everything pretty much worked. Actually I did hate the look of the cop who revived at the end. His weird blown out eyes looked like demon eyes, I didn't even realize that was him and thought some random ass paranormal element was coming into play for a sec
The main character went through more shit than most horror heroins I can think of. And she doesn't even MAKE IT! Poor bastard
The villain was so easy to hate. I loved when the main girl torched her at the end, that scene was awesome. Looked kinda goofy but it was a great moment, FUCK that lady!
This movie was frustrating though. Every character was a fucking idiot, I wanted to scream. It got a bit annoying to watch people keep coming into the house and not just...watching their back. Like WHY did the cop and prisoner leave the lady alone in her room just to go turn on the lights? They were gonna leave anyway, wtf was the point. JUST TAKE HER AND WALK OUT THE FRONT DOOR. It was so stupid. And then the lead is laying in bed with a revolver and instead stabs the attacker with a knitting needle instead of blowing her brains out??? And then just leaves her there with the gun and walks downstairs? Ughhhhhhhhhh. She could've just BLASTED her easily. So silly
I didn't love how the villain was such an unstoppable force either. I wish she was smarter instead of everyone just being so dumb. She was like the Predator, it was kinda silly. I wish the whole script was smarter in a Hush sorta way as far as home invasions go
I did really like the reveal of who she was and why she was doing everything, I didn't see that coming. That was fun
Overall it was good, I enjoyed it enough. I think I read that BloodyDisgusting ranked it in the top 20 horror movies of the decade which is...surprising. I wouldn't go that far!
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Misc - French Extremity: Oooooooo we've got a close call here. Inside vs. Sheitan, a movie I thought I would hate that ended up being weirdly enjoyable enough. I had to sleep on it, but I'm going with Inside. I watched it alone in my new unfamiliar dark apartment with no one else here and that made it more effective. Sheitan was good, but it was kinda too...gross-weird for my taste at times. A year later and I don't remember a lot of things about it besides Vincent Cassel being a boss. 2019 finally gets another point

It was goooood. Was it 4.0 on LB, 96% on RT, "masterpiece", "one of the best horror movies of all time" good? HELL NAW! But it was good
Best thing it had going for it was the main character and actor. He was interesting. The guy played him well. That's all I have to say
The kills weren't terribly fascinating but that's to be expected with one of the first slasher movies
The footage his dad shot of him as a kid was a great way of understanding the character and showing some backstory exposition instead of telling it, I liked that scene
I really loved the end reveal with the mirror. That really heightened the movie for me, it was a pretty unexpected and sadistic twist that fit perfectly with what the movie was about. Pretty perfectly done. His suicide was good too
I was hoping the movie would be more fucked up/disturbing like Black Christmas. I think that's what I was expecting anyway
I had something else to say but I forget what. I bet it was really important
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Killer: Slasher: Peeping Tom vs. Candyman. Eeeeeeeek. Both considered slasher classics. Both a 6/10 for me. I liked Candyman better than expected and didn't love Peeping Tom as much as I had hoped. I think I'm gonna give it to...Candyman? For now? I can't decide. I tend to award movies that surprise me and punish movies that don't live up so that's probably a factor in my mind. But Tony Todd is a boss and his performance in Candyman was the best thing about either movie. Candyman is just such a strange character and unique villain

Horror anthologies are for some reason tough to get right. This came close!
I didn't LOVE the tone. I wish it was more hard horror instead of the comedy bits, those didn't work too well for me. Stephen King's doofus face was just a lil too much
I didn't dislike a single segment, but wasn't floored by any of them either. Romero directing and King writing is such a powerhouse duo, but you'd think they'd have come up with something a little more frightening or fucked up or classic in some sorta way. I think they were adapting pretty directly from old Tales from the Crypt comics so they could only do so much I guess but still. I guess I wish they came up with their own material if that was gonna limit them. It would've been cool if King wrote it and different horror directors each did a segment. Romero, Carpenter, etc. That could've been an allllll time classic
Ranked segments:
Something to Tide You Over: Love Leslie Nielsen. RIP. He used to do dramatic roles before turning to comedy and this is the first of his that I've seen. He was good. I loved the tide concept for kills and the look of the ghouls at the end was good
The Crate: Man that wife fucking SUUUUCKED. And they gave her an off-screen death?? That sucked. But the other two kills were both pretty great, the janitor and the student
-gap-
They're Creeping Up on You: I was a lil checked out by the time this one rolled around. But the money shot at the end saved the segment for me, goofy looking dummy head aside
Father's Day: This one was fine. I liked the shocking shot of the mother's head being twisted around. I also loved young Ed Harris' dance moves, what a stud!
The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill: Ehh, it was okay. Didn't do much for me, I didn't love the over the top performance from King like I said. I did like the makeup effects
★★★ average/good/interesting concept
Misc: Anthology: Creepshow vs. Ghost Stories. Creepshow takes it. Ghost stories was a big letdown for me, I was really looking forward to it at the time and it didn't deliver

Another five KNOCKED OUT! I was falling behind. I'm still not on a very good pace but this helped catch me up a bit. Halfway done now after three months, but only two months to go. I gotta pick it up

1. Midsommar
2. Day of the Dead
3. Creature From the Black Lagoon
4. Carrie
5. Inside
6. One Cut of the Dead
7. The Battery
8. Creepshow
9. Peeping Tom
10. The Haunting
11. Dracula
12. The Perfection
13. As Above, So Below
14. Pet Semetary
15. The Fog
16. The Beyond
17. Session 9
18. Phantasm
19. The Hills Have Eyes
20. Critters
A pretty average group full of 6/10's, which tbh is above average for this challenge and probably for most horror movies. Horror movies are TOUGH! I'm never unhappy when I watch a 6/10 horror movie really
Session 9 joins the stinky pile at the bottom. The other four sit in the upper half but none were spectacular for me. I had a hard time ranking these four against each other. Inside being my fifth favorite feels weird to me but here we are. I'm sure some of these will shuffle around in the future. I always have a hard time ranking any 6/10 movies around each other |
