Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence are good songs.

That's from their very first album and has Vince Clarke on there still (before he went on to Yaz and then Erasure). The songs take a darker and darker turn has the years go on and Martin moves fully into his songwriting. You eventually get to stuff like "In Your Room" which is very obviously about Dave's struggles with heroin addiction and how Martin is kind of trapped with him, with the chorus saying:

"I'm hanging on your words,
Living on your breath,
Feeling with your skin,
Will I always be here?"

How can you have any pudding if you won't eat your meat?
