I personally like the 4 team playoff. But would not be opposed to 8. I like that style points and scheduling matter and its not as simple as winning your conference. |
Until the SEC gets rid of it's annual "FCS in November" games, scheduling doesn't mean shit. If Ohio State would have scheduled Kent State instead of Oklahoma to start the season, they'd be in the playoffs instead of Alabama, even with the loss to Iowa.

Alabama played FSU week 1. I agree the FCS in November is silly though and yes had they scheduled Kent State they'd be in. It is risk/reward. Would OU be the slum dunk in they were had they played Kent State instead of Ohio State? I dunno.

One of only three 12-1 conference champions? Yeah, they are still in. Are they #2? Probably not, but they are easily #3.

That's why it should be 8 teams: the champ from each power 5 conference, then the best 3 at-large teams.
Play the first round at the top 4 seeds this week. Then give them the 3 weeks to prep for the semifinals on New Year's Day. |
I totally agree with h this if we can’t have a 16 team playoff like every other football sub division.
Why is the student athlete the excuse for division 1 and not all other divisions? It should be a minimum of 8 teams just like spin said if not 16 teams.

If you go to 16, then there is no need for a conference championship game, which means much less money for the conference. I think 8 is as big as you can logistically make work and still pay off all the people you need to.
That said, I still love the 16-team idea where EVERY conference champion gets in (10 teams) and then you fill in with the 6 best remaining teams. It'd be more like March Madness, when you get #1 Clemson against the Sub Belt champ...lol. Just for shits and giggles, here's that bracket (because I'm bored).
Conference Champs: Clemson (1), Oklahoma (2), Georgia (3), Ohio State (5), USC (8), UCF (12), Boise State (25), Toledo (28), FAU (31), Troy (35),
At-Large: Alabama (4), Wisconsin (6), Auburn (7), Penn State (9), Miami (10), Washington (11),
#16 Troy @ #1 Clemson -- Troy beat LSU at LSU, can they do it twice? (Answer: not a chance...lol)
#9 Penn State @ #8 USC -- It's basically the Rose Bowl for Penn State
#13 Boise State @ #4 Alabama -- Can Boise upset a big boy again? (Answer: see Troy)
#12 UCF @ #5 Ohio State -- Can UCF stay undefeated without their coach?
#14 Toledo @ #3 Georgia -- This game has to be played on a Wednesday, just because #MACtion
#11 Washington @ #6 Wisconsin -- Who wants the W in this one?
#15 FAU @ #2 Oklahoma -- Instead of playing a bowl game at home, FAU gets to travel and watch Baker Mayfield put up 85 points and have sexual relations with at least 3 cheerleaders all at the same time.
#10 Miami @ #7 Auburn -- Auburn has an ACC problem, Miami has a "good" problem

SC not scheduling Notre Dame would be like Texas not scheduling Oklahoma. It won't happen.

I said that about the Notre Dame Michigan game too, but if ND continues to lose enough to a certain program for too long they'll dump em.
