Just got back from it!
I definitely liked it better than the first. It didn't drag as much, and not as much overbearing CGI (though there still was more than I CARED FOR). Some of the action/countless escapes got pretty repetitive but again, not as bad as the first
|
Bombur(?) in the barrel was the best part of the movie. That was amazing
Tauriel was ugh. She ACTUALLY had an "I almost shot youuuu!! :P " moment towards Legolas after I joked about it to Curtis (:
For the Big Bad of the trilogy, Smaug wasn't really all that IMPOSING. The first scene with Bilbo sneaking around, trying not to wake him up was GREAT and very suspenseful, but after he woke up...eh. I would've liked to see him kill at least SOMEONE so there's actually a reason to be intimidated by him. I mean he overthrew an entire kingdom and he can't hit one of 10 people with fire in an enclosed room? Meh. I'm sure shit will get more real in the next one but I really think he should've hit someone to raise the STAKES
Also the ending was pretty bullshit. The original trilogy, while it was one long story, still had good CLOSURE for each chapter. Even the first Hobbit movie did. This literally just ended in the middle of a big scene. I'm guessing that stems from the fact that the originals were all one book each, and this is stretching a small book into three movies, but still. DIDN'T CARE FOR IT!
And now I realize almost all of these are criticisms (: I DID LIKE IT THO! It was far from being as good as the originals (and I never expected any of these movies to amount to those) but it was definitely an improvement. |

I loved Bard. The part where he grabs the last arrow is so good. |

The barrel roll was definitely the best part, I agree.
The Hobbit is a children's book, yo and each volume of LOTR are two books making it six books (:
Also, I lol'd at the Legolas feels.

the only place i really felt DRAG was Rivendell. The scenes of WIZARD CONJECTURE are dire. otherwise it's a pretty fun ride that i think is paced pretty well and has two decent character arcs in Bilbo and Thorin.

Yeah completely agreed. That's the only stretch of the movie that I felt like it dragged a bit too long. At least Rivendell is pretty tho

TOO pretty tbh! It's probably my least favorite location from the movies. It's so artificial looking

Oh man. I thought it was great. I loved the first but I felt like this was a step above it
THOTS:
|
- The forest that drove them mad was really cool. And seeing the ring start to take its toll on Bilbo was great. When he stabs that smaller spider brutally over and over because of the ring. So good. His facial expressions were perfect
- Legolas was my favorite character from the trilogy and I liked him a lot here. I'm glad he wasn't PERFECT and was kind of a dick again since this all took place before he GREW. Seeing him get sorta beat up by that hunter guy was kinda nice
- Tauriel..not that bad really! The I ALMOST SHOT YOUUU!/LOST part was funny Cart. I lol'd. She was fine though really. I didn't mind the shoehorn'd her/Kili 'romance' as much as I thought I would as it began to develop, WHICH I'LL GET INTO WITH MY NEXT POINT:
- The dwarves were developed much better in this one. At least some of them were. I didn't mind the Kili/Tauriel connection because it brought out Kili's character a lot more, and I liked him a lot. I thought he was doomed when he went for that wench and was hit with the arrow. They did a good job of making me care about him in a short scene
There's still a couple of dwarves that I couldn't tell you much about, but they can't reasonably spend too much time on each of them. They're focusing on the ones that I like so that's good at least
- The pacing was great. Nothing dragged for me. If they were cut anything out of the movie I don't see what it could've been, and it was exciting throughout and I didn't get sick of any action sequences.
- The ELF ACROBATICS were really impressive, and I loved any scene when the dwarves worked together to fight in unusual ways. Those are always really fun. The barrel part was so great. Bombur up on land just absolutely crushing everyone was so funny. I really loved that
- Bard ruled. I liked him a lot. The elf king made a good new douche king too. Stephen Fry's appearance was kinda just wut. His HENCHMAN better die in the next one. Alfred? I want to see him burn
- Solid acting again from the main three, Bilbo/Gandalf/Thorin. All were really good
- GR8 MUSIC
- I loved the ending. Didn't feel like a cop out at all to me. The next movie is only a year away so I see no problem with leaving us on a TEASE |

OH YA AND SMAUG
|
I thought it was perfectly done. He looked great and sounded great. I loved that he was very smart and well spoken, I didn't expect that. I didn't know much about Smaug coming in really so that was a cool surprise
About what Cart said about him being easily defeated or not killing anyone, I didn't mind that at all really. I didn't expect any of them to die and I guess if no one did at that point in the story, they wanted to stay true to that. I felt like the danger was still definitely there because of how monstrous Smaug was. Plus Thorin caught on fire for a sec!! (:
And I liked that they were able to work together to 'defeat' him too. It was THEIR TERRITORY so it was kinda nice to see them work together in their old home and all. Plus they didn't actually defeat him and he rose from LAVA so that was formidable enough for me tbh |
