Okay that was indeed pretty good. I got major Where the Wild Things Are vibes from the kid.
|
I want to take the stance that it was absolutely all in her head, or some shared psychosis between the two of them. So she wrote the book right? Since she said that she used to be a writer during her niece's birthday party.
I feel like the Babadook was the manifestation of her hatred, sorrow, and resentment of her son for the death of her husband. Almost like an alter ego or something. Especially since it all seemed tied into the basement where all of the father's belongings were, and that's where it was finally contained in the end. Like she conquered it and locked it away.
And... goes down there to eat worms. I don't know. But I don't feel like the Babadook was a real monster independent of the temporarily insane cunt of a mom. I feel like it was her and the really depressing/shitty atmosphere of their home that was boiling for years.
Of course none of that really explains some of the visuals we see like the kid being thrown and dragged around.
I was sufficiently creeped out by it, but couldn't help laughing at certain parts. The aforementioned Home Alone esque series of events, the EAT SHIT scene, the hilarious stock dinosaur noise they stuck in here and there for some reason even though it already had that great creepy Baba dook dook dook noise. And the fact that neither of them give a shit about the dog in the end.
Pretty good. Preeetty preeetty preeettty preeettttty good. |

Everyone mentions the dinosaur noises but I must have missed that somehow. it sounds funny.

One thing that doesn't add up for me if the Babadook is all imaginary is the scene towards the end when the 'dook's coat and hat falls onto the floor. She's going to approach it but Sam screams "DON'T TOUCH IT!" If the Babadook is all in her head, were they both having the same vision or what? Also Sam saw the same black vomit that was on her mouth too, didn't he?
I did read a theory that the last 10 or so minutes are all fantasy and the mom actually killed her son and imagines a perfect life from then on. I don't buy it though, it seems so easy to do the whole "It was just a fantasy all along!" theory and it's so played out. I dunno.
Also lol @ them not caring about the dog. Didn't even think of that. |

Also what was going on at the beginning when he hugged his mom and she pushed him away and told him to "stop that"?

Like I said a lot of that last stretch of the movie really doesn't go along with the "it was all in her head" approach but the walls and shit were cracking too and obviously that wasn't actually happening so I have trouble thinking some of it was happening but other parts weren't happenning. The puke or whatever is indeed still on the floor after she passes out and Sam rushes over to her.
I kinda wish they would have gone about the very last few scenes a different way, but from what I remember it was pretty much how the short film it was based on ended so I guess they had to keep it in.
I'll never not refer to it as "the 'dook" again. |

Huh. Just watched the short film that I didn't know existed before now, and I definitely wouldn't have gotten all the symbolism without seeing the actual movie first. Though it does emphasize how the 'dook is sort of kept like a dirty secret or a skeleton in the closet, if you will.

They did have the shot of the dog buried in the garden beneath the mom at the end as she picked vegetables from above it. That's weird as fuck
The dog's death was BRUTAL! I hated watching it |
Apparently this movie should've had its own thread (:

dawg the editing in that movie is so cool. i can't think of a single great movie from the 70's whose cutting wasn't influenced by it. the editor not only got nominated for the oscar, he also edited SHAFT, another movie whose vibe is too cool for square cats.
last movie i watched was the Maze Runner. Better than I'd expected, but I felt like it lacked a few crucial things that could have made it really cool. The score was bland as crap, the lighting was way too bleak (i get that it's dystopian fiction but it didn't have to look so damn depressing), and the story seems way too primed to set up for the next movie.

scratch that i can't think of a COOL 70's movie that wasn't edited like Midnight Cowboy. The Godfather and Network are great movies but they're so square when you look at shit like Mean Streets or the French Connection or even Dog Day Afternoon
