What a bold and weird fucking movie. I watched this last Thursday and have sort of procrastinated on writing this just because I didn't really know how I felt about this one.
The first act did not keep my attention well, I felt like I wasn't given enough information to care, and had really no investment in any of the characters.
All that changes once the plot starts to reveal itself in the flashbacks. This movie feels very divisive and morally numb at times, but the one thing I couldn't deny was that it kept my attention.
There are a lot of similarities between this and the Perfection. The difference with this though, is that the plot actually made sense. Decisions made sense even if they were unlogical.
I really don't know how to feel about the overall message of this movie? Am I suppose to feel sorry for Vera, even though she raped and caused the death of Norma? Should I celebrate the fact that Vera gets raped? Is the movie essentially trying to challenge those perceptions? It's tough to watch a movie like this when you feel emotionally uninvested in all the characters. Sure Dr. Ledgard seems like the most morally motivated but that doesn't justify his actions, and if anything, the fact that he essentially falls in love with Vera suggests that his motives were only for himself.
I don't know. It's pretty obvious that I still don't really know what to say about this, but I can't deny that it still was a very well made film that, aside from the beginning, managed to keep me engaged with its plot. I don't know man. I'd be interested to see what everyone else thinks about this.
How the fuck do you compare this to From Beyond? I really don't remember much about From Beyond aside from a few practical effects, which doesn't really help it. No matter how I feel about The Skin I Live In, I don't think it's one that I will ever really forget. Therefore, it wins the point.

Have you ever watched a movie and think "wow what a really effective and well made VISION...I hope I never have to watch this again!"
That's pretty much how I felt about this. As soon as the hardcore music starts in the opening credits, the movie effectively keeps you tense and UNCOMFORTABLE.
I love how it not only refuses to give you what you want, but it mocks you for it. The third-wall breaks were few and far between enough to where they remained effective and soul-crushing.
This entire movie is soul-crushing. When the golf ball rolls into the room as the two men return, you're just like fuuuuuuuck. It hurts. I'm hesitant to give this an actual "like" on letterboxd but regardless it's probably going to be one of the higher entries on this list.
Man, I REALLY enjoyed Wait Until Dark last year. Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin were both absolutely fantastic. I wish the entire movie was more like the last 15 minutes, but it's the slow and quirky build up that makes the last act so god damn suspenseful.
This is really fucking close. Fuck. I have to give it to Funny Games. Not only does it breathe life into a normally cliche sub-genre, but it effectively keeps your attention for the entire runtime.
I give it to s2...but I'm not happy about it.

That p much sums up my exact feelings about it. I bumped it up to a 3.5 recently but tbh it should probably be higher just for how much of an EFFECT/imprint it made on me. One of the most displeasurable movies I've ever watched but def one of the most memorable |

It’s super interesting to hear your thoughts on this one, because I was really disappointed watching it. Might have been the situation (tipsy and on a projector with friends), but i didn’t feel any of the tension. The idea was cool, but it felt like there was no emotion beneath it and so I felt cold the whole time. Idk. Maybe I’ll give it another go since I’m hearing positive reviews.

I can totally see that. I feel like since it's so detached from itself and so seemingly inevitable at times, I could easily have found myself cold or disconnected from it.
IDK! |

well you have a good excuse to watch it again cuz this time you could watch the US shot-for-shot remake by the same director! (: Which is actually the one I watched, but from what I've read there's virtually no difference (content or quality-wise)
tbf I am farrr from a horror aficionado but MOST horror movies I've watched just are scary/disturbing in the moment but kinda leave me as soon as I'm done watching. But this one really got under my skin and stuck with me. Possibly because of the relative lack of violence and the fact that it was all centered around psychological horror? More than anything it was the feeling of dread and inevitability that made it so effective, the one moment where you get some HOPE for the usual respite gets quickly snuffed out, and like Jacob said even openly MOCKS you for it. Which was quite the risk tbh and could've easily robbed the movie of all its tension but somehow worked imo |

I started this last night, got about an hour in, and wasn't very sold. I thought the one-take in itself was nothing special and awkward at times. You compare one take scenes like this to a movie like VICTORIA, one of my favorite movies EVER, which has so much style and great music and performances, One Cut looks a little LACKLUSTER.
Then it started going into the final sequence of the movie, the "filming" and imo the movie totally makes sense. It's supposed to be messy, awkward, random, because of all the HOOPLA that's going on behind the scenes. I feel like this movie does a great job of capturing the chaos of movie-making. I loved the drunk and the actor with glasses. His reaction to getting puke on him was fucking hilarious. I remember seeing the "drunk" passed out during the first section of the film and being like...why is this zombie just passed out on the ground, then when you realize what's actually going on, it's hilarious.
I think this movie was a lot of fun. Yea, it looks cheap, the music is corny, and it's very unbalanced, but in a way I think that's what it was kind of going for? I really liked the ending. The human pyramid is a great symbol for the collaboration of FILMMAKING! D'AWWWWW!
Now...to compare it to FRIGHT NIGHT. Fright Night was one of my all-time favorites last year. It's the perfect mix of humor and horror. It's got some great moments/characters in it sooo yea, S1 gets the point.

That was pretty bad!
I went in not expecting a whole lot but man this was rough. The acting is just horrendous. It's over the top but in the worse way. The way the blonde guy delivered his lines and ran around was so bad.
The final act saves itself a bit, but overall this was just brutal. The only way I'd watch it again is if I was in a packed theater and was absolutely hammered.
Dee Wallace, you were in some great horror movies but you were definitely in a lot of BAAAAAD ones too.
Wolf Creek wins. OOF. As much as I hated everyone in that movie, at least it had some pretty good cinematography.

uhhhh..........nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
The good: Kills and gore. It was packed full of pretty grotesque practical effects and some great kills. The spider death was naaaasty, ewwwwww. The nail through the head, the plumber's eye gouged out, the headshot on the little girl at the end, the acid on the face. This was very obviously the movie's biggest and only strength
The bad: Everything else. It felt like this was made just to test out different cool gore effects, it bounces from kill to kill pretty shamelessly. The dialogue, the plot, the awful music, the acting, the dubbing. WOOF! I'm not sure Italian horror is for me (= . This just proved how great Suspiria is tbh - it made me look past the terrible dubbing and awkward acting and awkward...everything. But Beyond didn't have enough going for it to overcome any of that imo
I don't have much to say really, it didn't hold my interest at all and I couldn't wait for it to be over immediately
★★ disappointing/uninteresting
Paranormal - Devil/Demon/Hell: In The Mouth of Madness. Another movie that I didn't like a whole lot, but it was better than this (even tho the gore in this was better than anything in either movie). This movie reminded me a lot of Prince of Darkness actually. I always mix that up with Mouth of Madness. Point to 2018

Very enjoyable! Lots of great kills in here like the shovel zombie and military deaths. I think my favorite is the poor guy whose vocal cords get higher and higher as his head is ripped off.
Had some trouble investing in the characters. All the military people were complete meatheads. I thought Rhodes was the most dynamic but thought it was an odd choice to have him abandon his men to try and escape. It felt very backward for his character whose entire motive was to project "his" people.
Needed more Bub tbh.
This was great but doesn't match up with Re-Animator. Re-Animator has great characters, great one-liners, and some really fun gore. POINT GOES TO S1 and we've TIED UP AGAIN.

This stunk as expected
Always heard this was p bad and it was! It’s a typical Stephen King adaptation. I’ve never read the book but I could see hints of good/dark King shit that they glossed over in this. My roommate finished the book literally five minutes before we hit play and he was silently stewing the whole time about the awful changes they made. I dunno why it’s apparently so hard to adapt King’s material
BUT ANYWAY I thought this had pretty much nothing going for it outside of King’s original ideas. The kid’s death and the neighbor’s death were both brutal. And the sister ghost was creepy I guess. But that’s it. The acting stunk and I think they could’ve done a much better job playing with the grief theme. Kinda wish the kid died earlier so the dad had more time to stew over his big decision
Whole thing had that bad late 80’s/early 90’s hammy made for TV movie feel to it, just like Cujo. The finale with Gage was so awkward. The kid’s mean face, the clear doll stunt double, the “no fair! :( “ line. Woof

What a mess, honestly! This movie looks cheap, has a story that's barely struck together, horribly writing, and too many random characters. But I gotta say, if you embrace the ridiculousness of it, it's actually a pretty fun watch. I died laughing when the painter fell after seeing the blind woman. It just perfectly sums up the whole movie. We get introduced to random minor characters just to see them die in the next 2 minutes. It felt like it just went from one crazy murder to the other. The practical effects were so bad, but great in a campy, exploitation sort of way. That spider scene was so fucking weird and long, but if anything it was creative. Lots and lots of eye-popping!
I can't believe how high this is on my list, but I just kept asking myself (would I want to watch x over The Beyond again? The answer kept being no.) This is a movie you get hammered and force your friends to watch so you can laugh at it. I found it enjoyable in that sense. The guy CONSTANTLY shooting the corpses in the stomach, after establishing they had to be shot in the head was just killing me. Whatever dude!
This goes up against In The Mouth of Madness, a pretty average Carpenter flick. I wasn't crazy about it but it's overall a more coherent and well-rounded movie than the Beyond. I give it to YOUUUUUUU S1.

Now to be fair, I was kind of indifferent about watching a movie last night, so I put this on with the intention that I was gonna zone out from time to time.
That being said, I thought this was very unentertaining, unfortunately. The only part I enjoyed was the one death scene that I had seen. There was just too much running around, bad dialogue, and really weird decisions of splitting up. I thought the Tall Man was a little more corny than creepy. I also dislike when a horror movie doesn't know how to end so they pull the whole "WE ACTUALLY GOT YOU! NO ESCAPE!" pull through the door/window/closet/pool/car/dirt routine.
Phantasm v Braindead. Braindead wins!

Heads up that I switched Session 9 with Hills Have Eyes. Even though I thought much of THHE was poorly executed and messy, I can still see kind of what Craven was going for with a battle of classes. I don't feel like making my bottom movie one that at least has a vision. So I pulled a little SWITCHAROO!
