Anyone else watch this? It's a 12ish episode long season on Netflix. Kevin Spacey's in it, David Fincher directed. I'm just a few episodes in but I like it a lot already
All the episodes were released only on Netflix on the same day, same thing Netflix is doing with Arrested Development. I read a lot of stuff about how this is the future of television. Most people stream an entire season of their shows all in one weekend anyway. A lot of people think that this is how it'll be in 5 years, everything at once. Kind of weird. YOUR THOTS FRIENDS?

I read that Netflix knows all about what you watch and how long and where you pause, rewind, etc... and they keep tabs on that data. So now that they are making programming they can easily find what people are watching and re-watching.
It's pretty brilliant. They see that people liked this old british mini-series, Kevin Spacey, and David Fincher movies so they just said, HEY LET"S PUT THEM ALL TOGETHER.
Which is great! I can only imagine what sort of crazy combinations they'll turn up with the sort of things people watch a lot.
I personally don't have Netflix due to my slow internet but I really want to watch this to see if the formula works.

I watched the first episode today! Kinda dug it tbh. Kevin Spacey is great, his voice so perfect for the character. I'd heard about the fourth wall breaking and was kind of dreading it but it really worked well for the show (probably largely due to the quality of the writing and Spacey's acting.) But I don't think the rest of the show is as compelling as the FRANK stuff. The SPUNKY JOURNALIST who seems to pretty much be the female lead is okay so far, but I can't imagine where they'll take it. And a lot of the characters currently seem sort of extraneous but I guess I'll have to watch the rest to find out (:
As for the NEW model of television stuff, I am not a fan. I feel like BINGE WATCHING is sort of reductive for some shows anyway and I don't like that it's become the habit for a lot of people. It can work for the Wire because it's just a long overarching story but a lot of shows let the episodes tell individual stories, and a lot of the nuance can be lost if watched in just one go. Of course IT WORKED FOR THE NOVEL or whatever arguments people are throwing out in favor of it

Maybe it'll be a DAILY thing? I think I would like that a lot tbh. If they had all episodes of a season all finished up and released one a night for a couple of weeks. It would be like an event. One day is a perfect amount of time to wait for the next segment. Better than having to wait one week and better than being able to watch the next episode immediately, which defeats cliffhangers a bit. One day is plenty of time to stew for the next episode, and the buzz would be huge for those two weeks I think

Things really start heating up with episode 9 and 10. Eight wasn't too great. The minor revelation about Francis' college days was not needed at all IMO. Slow episode
But I just watched 9 and 10 and it really starts moving things a lot. Two great episodes

HUPU TALKING TO YOU SINCE IT'S JUST US TWO
Jesus @ episode 11
|
Talk about point of no return for Francis. Clearly he was capable of a lot of things and willing to do most of it, but this was shocking. You could slowly sense that it was coming but it was still a huge surprise to me.
Poor Russo. Such a tragic character. Used as a pawn and manipulated all the way through, then just tossed aside. The scene when he was on the phone with his daughter was heartbreaking. This episode just bumped things up a huge notch. |

Episode 2 - p good! Peter Russo is at least an interesting character and I loved his scenes with Kern's classmate. My thing right now is that I'm not really sure what other major obstacles Frank has at this point, and I'm not sure how it'll last the rest of the season without some padding (Frank's wild college years does not sound totally necessary tbh). And I don't much want them to do a formula of Frank manipulating everybody incredibly skillfully every episode. It seems like Zoe is going to be the KEY to everything becoming unraveled as well and I don't know how to feel about that.

Russo's arc is really good
There's not much padding surprisingly. There's certainly some, but it quickly picks back up afterwards. The pacing is well done IMO
Frank hits road bumps and it's great to watch. He's not without flaws and doesn't execute things perfectly episode after episode

Haha I just finished chapter 3 too. Probably my favorite so far, really loved all the stuff in GAFFNEY and how shitty a human being Frank is. I also love how casually Vasquez disregarded the whole situation, like everyone involved is just apathetic to the dead teenage girl thing. The education stuff is still pretty interesting too, but Claire's plotline is just I dunno. The stuff she does (not related to the Initiative) feels really tangential and unnecessary even from a thematic standpoint

I too thought that episode 8 was rather slow. Liked the content and all but the pace seemed out of place, comparing and going by earlier episodes. I watched it with my brains off last night but besides the pace I thought it was alright...necessary, who knows?! maybe...maybe not (: Remmy was pretty ballsy, tellling claire that if she changed her mind his room is down the hall etc...wtf?!
really looking forward to the next ones, should be more fast paced again.
