PROLOGUE

Jim Gordon would never admit it, but he was getting too old for this.

Chasing another goddamn criminal through the streets of Gotham.

He was the police commissioner, he had been looking forward to retiring in a couple of years, but every cop in the city was on duty tonight.

The Gotham Gazette called it a major crime spree, but Gordon knew it was much more than that. Several major-level super villains had formed another super group, and were wreaking havoc in his city. Again.

But this time felt different. He somehow knew that there would be heavy casualties. He was familiar with all of the escapees, even the ones that weren't from around here. Some big name bad guys that other cities, other superheroes, other cops had to tend with regularly. But now, they've all seemed to converge on Gotham City -- home of the Gotham City Police Department and home of the masked crime fighter known as Batman.

He was grateful to have Batman in his city. That he would admit.

The criminal in front of him ducked down an alley and Gordon followed. This guy wasn't one of the big name bad guys --- Batman, and other members of the Bat-family, and his allies in the Justice League would be on them. But this was still someone that Gordon knew needed to be taken off the streets.

"Freeze!" Gordon shouted as he pointed the gun at Frenchy Blake, the leader of a successful group of jewel thieves.

"My dear commissioner," Frenchy started. "I'm afraid I've done nothing wrong."

"Then why are you running?"

"You were chasing me…with a gun. Why wouldn't I run?"

Gordon exhaled deeply. "Just turn around and put your hands behind your---"

WHACK!

Something had knocked the gun out of his hands.

He looked up to see Duela Dent, a psychotic woman who injected herself regularly with Joker's blood and called herself his "daughter". She was holding a baseball bat.

"You," she says to Frenchy. "Take a hike! Me and Jim Gordon have a little business to take care of."

Gordon was prepared to fight.

"What on earth could we have to discuss?" he asked her.

"I didn't say anything about a discussion," she said as she lowered the bat and pulled a gun from her pocket. "I just said we had a little business to take care of. That business involves you delivering a message to Batman and whoever else you think is going to save Gotham City. Except you won't be using words."

Joker's Daughter aimed the gun square at Gordon's forehead and pulled the trigger.
