eh. Gave this one a 3/5 but honestly it was close to a 2.5 for me. Peele's been p disappointing post-Get Out tbh
Spoiler
+
The Gordy scenes were the best and I could've used even MORE of those! His freakout was scarier than most of the UFO scenes tbh
The movie's plot was fairly thin so it could've worked a lot better if I cared much for the brother/sister leads, but they themselves were p thinly drawn and there wasn't much to latch onto with either
The filmmaking itself was really solid tho and what saved it / makes it worth watching, Peele's DIRECTING abilities have never been in question
I thought it was so fun. I saw it opening night at a lil throwback cinema in Boston that I've been dying to go to for awhile. It was a great theater, packed house, super young crowd. Everyone was howling throughout the movie, it was a great time. Everything Everywhere set the bar, Maverick met it, and then Nope probably topped both of them. In terms of theater experience I mean. All three were all time standouts for me. At a time that movies desperately need it too so that's nice
ANYWAY! I really liked it. It was definitely Peele's take on Jaws but way better done than most movies today that try a Spielberg approach. I thought he nailed it. Besides just "shark in the sky", there was a ton of story beats and homages that were clearly taking from Jaws (and Close Encounters ofc). That was a lot of fun for me since Jaws is in my top five all time
Three favorite scenes: The full Gordy scene, Yeun's crowd being shown inside the creature, and the kids playing the prank with the mask (another bit from Jaws!)
The prank scene had my audience SQUIRMING. When that second "alien" popped its head around the corner. That was so good. And boi was the shot of that lady getting sucked up further into the UFO disturbing
I love that it wasn't really a UFO and that it was supposed to just be more of a predator/creature. Fun angle
I also thought it was super funny. All three of his movies are funny but this was the funniest and clearly was trying to be
Been reading a lot of cool theories and watching analysis videos on it. Makes me like it even more. There's some interesting stuff regarding Yeun's story especially. Could've used more Yeun tbh. That and a weaker third act compared to the first two are my only real complaints
8/10, on par with Us. I'd have to rewatch both to pick a favorite. Get Out is his clear best but I'm glad he went for a more fun summer movie here instead of trying to recapture the Get Out magic
The Brody scenes are so good, Steven Yeun in particular was phenomenal. Loved all his scenes.
This is one of those movies I really gotta rewatch now that I know the plot. I had no idea what was going on until... really, towards the end I'd say and it kind of soured me at fiiiirst but I really grew to appreciate what was going on at the end. The acting and directing was ON POINT for sure. The Star Lasso Experience was really great in particular. Loved how the poster with Jupe's cowboy hat is really put into perspective that it's actually Jean Jacket once you see the scene.
Think I liked this a little more than Us? I've never really had a desire to rewatch Us at all.
