The residents of the blockaded apartment complex were a motley assortment of all types. They were wont to emerge from their apartments only when scuttling to and from whatever jobs they held. They worked a variety of jobs, coming and going at random intervals, always keeping their heads down, never making eye contact with one another. In fact, as they gazed around, each of them came to realize that they could barely remember having seen any of the others before. Come to think of it, it almost seemed as though the assembled group was a bit too large - surely they couldn't all be residents of such a tiny building?

As they waited, murmurs began to circulate throughout the crowd. What was going on? Why were the doors locked, and the windows sealed? Was it a terrorism thing? Was the city under attack?

"Listen up, everyone!" boomed a voice. Everybody turned around to see a large, balding man in a crisp white suit.

"My name is Paul Administer," thundered the man. "I'm a senior agent with the Center for Disease Control. This building has been quarantined under United States Government Directive 3.4.12, in order to contain a deadly pathogen which we believe has been released into the building. My team has been ordered to neutralize any infected individuals, and release any who test negative. So if you'll all form an orderly line-"

As Paul talked, a shadow loomed up behind him. Bloodshot eyes narrowed fiercely. Then the shadow struck.

Paul screamed as teeth sank deeply into his neck. Several of the residents scrambled backwards as a small, slightly-built woman knocked the agent to the ground. The infected woman snarled at the group.

BLAM!

Paul fired a shot from his gun. It tore through the infected's shoulder. It staggered slightly, shrieked, then fled into the dark recesses of the building.

"That was one of them," Paul groaned. "The infection... it turns people... they go crazy... Agents... you have to stop this..." The agent began to cough up blood. "Kill them! The... residents... Kill them all!"

Before any of this could sink in, Paul, determined not to let the virus claim another victim, placed the gun underneath his own chin.
