It was hard to imagine not even 48 hours earlier Cormac was attempting to bring together a majority group for after Hagrid's inevitable termination. So much had happened in that time from Cormac receiving his first vote in a shocking betrayal to the unanimous vote that should have been for Hagrid. Cormac made sure Hagrid was petrified because he could not bring himself to do so to anyone else. Now, though, he had a reason to mistrust at least one person.

If Cormac had to gather a guess who would be random enough to vote for him, he would have to say it was either Fred or Gilderoy. Somehow, he suspected Gilderoy for more than Fred because he had approached Fred for an alliance and Fred had seemed quite receptive to the idea while Gilderoy had been left out. Deciding instead not to think about it and draw attention to himself by starting a witch hunt, Cormac was delighted to hear there would be a swap, and he would be separated from a majority of his tribe. Except it did not work out that way. To his outstanding luck, Cormac was put on a new Rictusempra tribe with Ron and Rita. Cormac was weary of Gilderoy, but he knew better than to try and target the man when a single old Serpensortia member joined their ranks on the small tribe, Lily Potter.

Cormac concerned himself with the rest of his tribemates who were not so lucky in their new homes. He was particularly cautious for Pomfrey who, like Lily, was alone, but far more precious to Cormac's long-term game. During the challenge, Dudley spoke of wanting Cormac, Pomfrey and himself all agree to disarm one another. Cormac saw through that ruse and told Pomfrey what he thought, and Pomfrey agreed to disarm so she and Cormac would not lose points. Cormac was willing to shoot a killing curse out of his wand and take a negative two points in order to save Pomfrey. He decided to sleep on it.

When Cormac woke up the next day, it was to find a pile of homework that needed doing first. He was so distracted by the homework he forgot to return to the Dueling Club and cast his curse. The host of the competition was gracious enough to let him submit late before results were posted, but with a negative point attached. Cormac decided he did not want to be a killer and chose to disarm. Dudley did just as Cormac thought he might, but Cormac's own late action was enough to keep Pomfrey safe. It was regrettable it was at his expense. Cormac could only hope Rita and Ron would stick by his side. Not leaving anything to chance, Cormac also approached Gilderoy and they talked about the game for the first time, and also about their lives, for which the two had similar backgrounds in the past few months. This was a bond Cormac was not expecting but was grateful to have discovered. Gilderoy wasn't just a pretty face with an arrogant personality.

Cormac had a lot of time to think about that vote he received. Talking with Gilderoy, Cormac no longer believed the vote came from him. There were words used in the vote Cormac had only used when talking with Fred. He had used the words aggressive and arrogant and it seemed like just the thing Fred would do to cause chaos. He was a jokester, but he was also a brilliant mind. He had noticed things Cormac had not while exploring the castle. Perhaps Fred was trying to be funny by voting alphabetically. If that was his plan, Fred made a grave error in underestimating Cormac's ability to put two and two together. Cormac only hoped he was right and would not soon find that one of his current tribemates was holding a grudge against him for no reason he could think of.

Once again, Cormac quickly made a list of his remaining tribemates and how well he had communicated with them thus far based on O.W.L. grades: (O)utstanding, (E)xceeds Expections, (A)cceptable, (P)oor, (D)readful, (T)roll.

1. Gilderoy Lockhart - E
2. Lily Potter - P
3. Rita Skeeter - O
4. Ronald Weasley - O

There was certainly room to grow with Gilderoy, but there was no doubt Cormac had made significant progress. He only hoped it was enough progress to get him through the round so he could make up for his error in the last challenge, and have a much longer conversation with Newt than he had recently. For now, he would sleep and hope for Lily's petrification before the deadline.
